Arbitration Decisions - All 5 Tendered Contracts

Yesterday I wrote about the five arbitration situations with the Twins.

The deadline for determining whether or not to tender contracts to these guys is 7:00.

Let's discuss any signings here.

Jon Heyman reported that the Twins and Eduardo Escobar agreed at $2.6 million for 2017. I like it. With so many questions at SS, a good guy to have. And fair rate for a solid utility guy.

I like Escobar as a utility guy that can hold his own at SS, 2B, or 3B for extended periods of time in case of injuries. He gives a roster flexibility without being costly yet. Solid decision.

Ben Revere was non-tendered by Washington. He had a lousy year last year (supposedly due to injuries) but hit over .300 with OBP in the .335-.350 range the 3 previous years. What do you think about trying to bring him back as an LF/leadoff hitter with Rosario as the 4th OF.  It would also give us a viable backup plan in CF if Buxton can't hit.

Ben Revere hit .217/.260/.300 last season.  That is Butterible territory.  Frankly, Granite has very similar toolset (and a bit better arm), and I'd rather see what he can do, if necessary

Unless Ben would fit into a longterm picture, the Twins do have to see what they can push out of Buxton, and Granite is in the wings and should produce similar numbers to a Revere at a much cheaper cost.

I think Revere would be a fine bench option and 25th.  Imagine he still has range in the outfield and speed on the basepaths and would probably be a better bench asset than Danny Santana.

Wellington Castillo was also nontendered and would be a much better bench option than Murphy (he'd also make a nice platoon pair with Castro (.850ish OPS against Lefties).  I don't know how is defense is though.

I don't think Revere would fit with the Twins at this point. I would prefer the Twins chase players who are a bit louder in the personality column if they are going to chase sub-100 OPS+ guys.

Revere probably has a couple of productive years left, but he has been described as having the weakest arm strength in the league.  When he stops being able to run at an elite level he will be done.

I would also be perfectly happy with a Year of Ben Revere and not just because that rhymes.

His speed and defense has value and if he snapped back to the .300 hitter he was before. He could be a decent enough trade chip because he was a decent enough trade chip before. '

The players acquired for him in each of his trades were never anything to sneeze at.

I'd pick up the phone

If we could fuse Ben Revere with Robbie Grossman in order to make Robbie a better defender, I'm all for it. But otherwise, no thanks.

Yorman Landa was cut to open a spot on the 40-man roster

Why did they stop there? Randy Rosario and one of either Danny Santana or Robbie Grossman could be cut as well for starters. Let them start fresh and move out these players to free up more 40 man spots.

Grossman absolutely throttled lefties last year. Don't let a few bad defensive plays make you think he isn't useful.

I mean with Granite on the 40 man there is no need to have both Santana & Grossman. I would remove Danny Santana from the 40 man roster. He will get claimed and then go through the process a few times and end up in some teams minor league system.

Why is this? Granite won't play in the big leagues this year barring some sort of surprise, and is no guarantee to be an impact player.

Ben Revere is a solid outfielder, a solid lead off hitter, has great speed everywhere and is a solid clubhouse guy. Have you ever seen him without a huge smile on his face? I don't care what happened last year (injuries or otherwise), Revere should be offered a fair contract and be on the first plane back to Minnesota, first class.

A few bad plays? He was a train wreck defensively last year. Right now hes a 4th outfielder who can't play the outfield. He hits lefties well and is adept at getting on base so he could be a solid option for the weaker side of a platoon but his defense is just so bad it nullifies most of his value.

There is no reason to remove people from the 40 man roster until the 40-man roster space is needed. To add a Rule 5 pick next week someone had to come off the 40 man. That was Landa. If they sign other free agents, they have other guys that can come off. But there's not reason to remove them yet.

Also, Zach Granite has a chance to be a nice 4th outfielder. But with his skillset, he needs more time. I don't think adding Granite to the 40 man would affect a decision on a player like Revere. Granite has a chance to be Revere. Granite may be a 4th OF option who could start in CF for a short while in 2017, but he can use the time in AAA.

San Diego just non-tendered Tyson Ross.  Very good in 2014 and 2015 but hurt last year with a shoulder injury. There might be something there.

Apparently Ross had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in October. So he's on a similar rehabilitation track to Phil Hughes, but some months behind Hughes. His upside would be great to have on the Twins roster, but I assume he won't pitch until mid-season, which makes it more difficult to know how he'd fit into the plan. Still a worthwhile gamble for someone but I bet there will be another team willing to pay more for that gamble.

I'd take a shot at Ben Revere as a 4th OF.  If memory servers, he's had a few injuries over the years.  Maybe reduced playing time would keep Revere full speed all the time?

RE: the OP. As posted elsewhere, the decision to offer all five was essentially made the day only Plouffe was set adrift.

Seriously guys... Ben Revere? That's what floats your boat?

Maybe on a minor league deal... but I could say the same about dozens of other fringy outfielders.

If you don't mind the occasional two-hop bullet to the cutoff man.

If he could just maintain that velocity, it'd be one thing.
