Duensing back to rotation in 2014?

Duensing's role could switch next season | Star Tribune

Heard Dick and Bert talking about this on the broadcast last night, and Phil Miller has quotes from Gardy and TR about Duensing moving back to the starting rotation.

If a failed starter turned reliever is part of their 5-man rotation at the beginning of the year in 2014, the Twins will be in more serious trouble than I thought they already would be. In fairness, Ryan calls it a "Plan B" option, but if Duensing as a starter is Plan B, why didn't the Twins have him start at all this year? They could have used more Plan Bs.

I think I saw this movie once.

Only once?

Seems like the sequels are never-ending ... or maybe it is just the teasers in the previews.

Duensing actually became a solid reliever again after a slow start. Why try this again and mess with everything and have yet another totally open question mark for another starter? This is just dumb.

I don't believe Duensing will be on the roster next season. We have plenty of arms in the bullpen that could be forcing Duensing out of it. It may be that starting is Duensing's only way of remaining with the Twins.

My god. How many fourth and fifth starters does this team need? They have Correira for next year. Deduno will be back healthy. They seem intent on giving Diamond and Worley another shot. Albers, DeVries, and Hernandez are in the rotation right now. Hendriks will continue to lurk. Now they are talking about Duensing and Swarzak, neither of whom has a ceiling any higher than the rest.

I guess we're not going to know what the true plan is for fixing the rotation until the winter is over and we see what free agents they sign or don't sign, and what trades they make. This Duensing/Swarzak nonsense certainly doesn't inspire hope. All it does is encourage fans to become further apathetic, which I hope the Twins are aware of.

Duensing and Swarzak have improved greatly since they failed as starters. They seem far more likely to provide Quality Starts than the current crop. Even if the Twins decide to go with a 4 man rotation, Duensing and Swarzak should be given a chance to stretch out and compete for a starters job during spring training.

They've improved because they became relievers.

I will be enraged if Duensing is in the starting rotation discussion next year.

Might as well re-convert Perkins. Fien and Burton would surely make fine starters too. This plan is the aces.

Actually, I think converting Perkins back into a starter might be worth considering. He's the only guy they have with good enough stuff to be better than a 4th or 5th starter. A front end starter has more value than a closer(IMHO).

Duensing shouldn't be given another start. His stuff barely works out of the pen & he got lit up by RH hitters as a starter. Swarzak has a slightly better chance at success but he is doing a solid job filling the role he has. Why convert him into another #5 starter?

This is simply another "idea" to try to assemble a team conforming to the Pohlad budget/plan. We should expect a payroll for 2014 to be about $65MM to start--and then reduced from there as Willingham, Doumit, and Burton are traded. Perkins might be included in that bunch too! The plan is to operate on half of Smith's budget and still finish no worse than dead last--and likely better than Houston. I also believe that they are trying to run Mauer off by making things as unpleasant for him as possible.

Totally fine with BD becoming a starter again, as long as it's for the team they trade him to when they're out of the race in May.

Even after we have plenty of evidence that spring training performance doesn't correlate to regular season performance.

If the Twins are looking at those two as options by Spring it meant it was a disappointing off season and will be another long season.

Re-sign Blackburn and let's have 2011 all over again.

(Interestingly enough, Duensing pitched the most innings in 2011 of any starter not named Pavano).

I think that at this point, even the most loyal supporters & apologists of Ryan and Gardenhire & Co, should think that they are the ones who should be the "Plan B" option...

Do not see Duensing as a starter. He was on my marginal list to be DFA'ed or traded this winter. Do not like the thought of what the Twins may be looking for in starters. Duensing has lost the #1 lefty out of the pen, so where should he fit.

A call out to the mods. Intervention is necessary when incessant trolling and flame-baiting is going on. That's what the Twins are doing here, right? His prior dominance over lefties has utterly evaporated, he's pitched half the number of innings he pitched in 2012, so the obvious solution is to return him to an even more important role, one where he failed previously? I just about did a spit take when the boys broached the trial balloon last night. Because that's what this has to be- a real-time test for measuring fan tolerance for the absurd.

Look, I say don't put Duensing in the rotation because we have too many guys.

I know, know. You're asking LOL wut?

Correia and Deduno get a spot. 1 or hopefully 2 FA pitchers get a spot. And Diamond, Worley, Albers, minor league FA, Pressly can all fight for the last spot.

Why the heck should we convert an underachieving bullpen pitcher into a starter?

All those guys would have a better chance than Duensing, who has never been able to get out right handers. Until he shows a hint of being able to do that, the idea is a joke. Unless you're trying to plump up his trade value, even floating it is insane.

Note: They are training Duensing to pitch ambdextrously so he will fix his problem with RHB.

Not if the opposition trains their lineup to switch hit.
