Fatbat Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 Does anyone know why Simeon has been called up from the Saints? He hasn’t pitched well in either start this season…

stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 With the 5.2 innings the bullpen pitched on Thursday after Maeda's injury and with Headrick still unavailable, they needed to have length available Friday and Saturday in the event of another short start. The available options on the 40-man were Balazovic, Megill and Woods Richardson, since neither Sands or Varland could be recalled so soon after they were sent down. Megill has been a one-inning guy, so the Twins chose Woods Richardson over Balazovic. I expect they switch out SWR for Ober on Sunday.

With López pitching, I am expecting a little less reliance on the BP. I think it would be wasteful to send him down without having pitched. Morán could use a reset in AAA, imo. Or Headrick will go back since he’s had his taste.

He's clearly more highly regarded than Headrick and I don't think the Twins want him to pitch once a week (or less) in lowest leverage situations and burn service time. If Headrick is ready to pitch again, they need only one long man and it would be him IMHO. As far as Moran being demoted, sure, if they can find somebody who is capable (and probably on the 40-man roster). My best guess for Moran's eventual replacement would be Josh Winder, unless the Twins slot Winder in the long man carousel.

Maybe SWR gets the 7th or 8th inning tonight. Its nice to see him up but it also may show that they aren’t using pagan any time soon. They whole long relief need makes sense and hopefully we wont NEED it!
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 If the Sunday starter is still TBA, a bullpen game Sunday might be another option. Not sure of the details as far as who can be called up, Maeda’s status, etc, so that might not be practical. Just an idea.

He’s starting to look like he may be unfixable at MLB level and needs to develop some command of the zone in more Minor League work. He can’t throw strikes in good outings nor bad outings…….needs to get that better! Bringing a guy up w/o using him doesn’t make sense. Gray hasn’t looked ready to go deep into games to date so maybe SWR gets 2-3 innings on Sunday & we try to rest the Pen?
stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 Yeah, the way I see it and the way Rocco addressed the issue this winter in Rochester (Twins Caravan) is that he (Rocco) wants a seven-man bullpen plus a long man. The long man is technically part of the bullpen, but it seems this role is for a guy who can pitch multiple innings (at least three) and then not be used for a considerable time. The other guys are able to be used every other day with some usage on back-to-back days. The long man would be used in the lowest of leverage situations. To go in that role, the long man has to be stretched out enough to go at least three innings and probably not be high enough on the prospect list that the front office will fret that their development and service time are mostly accruing while watching games. Another key element for the long man is the ability to trade places with somebody in St. Paul. The presence of an option makes a huge difference. So, with that theory in my head, I'm viewing transactions accordingly. They couldn't bring up an long man candidate to replace Headrick after his major league debut because of 40-man constraints and option rules, but when Maeda went down early, they needed to cover and brought up SWR as the long man while keeping Headrick on the major league team. Headrick isn't going to displace a "real" reliever nor is Woods Richardson long term. If the Twins want to demote Moran and replace him, they'll want another reliever and I don't know who that is. This is all my opinion of course--"I could be wrong now, but I don't think so".

My point is, why waste a call up to just send him down without having pitched? I don’t think he should start Sunday’s game, so that leaves him in long relief, With López pitching today, I’m hopeful long relief won’t be needed, so just send him down tomorrow for Ober without having pitched? That is ridiculous. I agree they should still have him starting in StP, but he was called up for something and certainly it’s not to not pitch, so sending him down tomorrow for Ober makes no sense to me, unless they send down Morán instead. Or Headrick. I guess if SWR doesn’t pitch he had a couple days on the roster for a few extra dollars.
lecroy24fan Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 They needed a long man in the pen after the debacle on Thursday. I do not like the idea of sending Moran down because having Headrick as the only other lefty with Thielbar isn't a good plan at all.

It doesn't seem to be a callup on merit, given his stats, so I don't think the Twins are obligated to give SWR innings. Hopefully, they'll be up by enough runs to give innings to SWR, Moran and Headrick, instead of using Thielbar, Lopez and Duran.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 There looks like a lot to like with the young right hander, but I'm pretty sure he'll be back in St. Paul tomorrow.

Just a little more control and the hit he gives up wouldn't hurt, or not as much. Walks kill.
Fatbat Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Author Posted April 22, 2023 Both Lopez and SWR both sucked today. I’m blaming the sucky weather. Headrick is just stone cold good tho.
cheeseheadgophfan Verified Member Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 SWR walked guy on a pitch clock violation.....what are the rules? Can a pitcher call timeout? He clearly tried to before the pitch clock ran out......

The Twins kind of hung the young man out today. Odd.
MABB1959 Verified Member Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Time to get him out there and see if he can really pitch. For some of our players it is time to sink or swim. Kepler and Gordon have both sank, time to start cutting the losses and get on with the future. They can’t keep going on like this.

That sounds reasonable. It feels like the Twins keep players especially pitchers in the minors too long and when they get here they are a bit worn down and soon to be on the IL.
dxpavelka Verified Member Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Cuz we're pushing two years out on the Berrios trade and still have ZERO return on it????
stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 One notable thing about SWR’s outing is that his velocity is (for 2023) average at best. This isn’t news, but he is one of the few who hasn’t pushed up his velo. Is it the extreme overhand delivery? Since he is certainly behind Varland and Ober, so he will probably get a long run in St. Paul.
wabene Verified Member Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Yeah I think the overhand delivery could limit the velocity. It does allow him to spin it in two directions. Kind of a screwball.

Wow, angry much? I'd much rather have SWR right now than Berrios right now ... Berrios wasn't much older when he had his first full season with the Twins. If SWR is up next year pitching for the Twins, that's good, and timely, and not at 'slow' to promote. He is still a highly thought of prospect, but yes, he needs to show it and I think if he does next year, it was a good trade. He wasn't even considered the primary part of that trade but he was the one I was most intrigued by. If your expectation is to have an immediate return then you are going to be disappointed in just about every trade, except for those that fill an immediate need like Arraez for Lopez. But let's stay on topic here. If all you want to do is grumble about trades, write a blog. If you want to actually discuss things, then do so.
