Does Garver need PAs at this point, though? I'd be fine with sitting him more often and giving more development space to Jeffers and Rortvedt.

He was overmatched in the majors earlier this season, and isn't exactly lighting it up at AAA with a .683 OPS. I like to subtract .100 for moving up a level, and that's just a marginal level of offense even from a glove-first catcher.

But now he's up, anyway. :)

Randomly just thought of this but I'm thinking the Twins will call up Larnach and a pitcher on Wednesday for the 2 extra roster spots, and rotate others through teh taxi squad so moves can be made fast.

The Twins don't need Larnach at this point. Refsnyder is holding down play, and you got Rooker and Cave. Rooker should be DHing. But then we have the problem of where/when to play Arraez as long as Simmons is on the team. Donaldson is the perfect DH for now, and would be wonderful to see Miranda come in and play third, with Simmons (sadly) gone and Arraez and Polanco holding down the middle infield. You still have Gordon and The Turtle on the bench. Rortvedt also on the bench. We need to see Miranda.

 

Roster crunch time is coming.

 

If the Twins activate Dobnak and/or Farrell, they have to remove guys from the 40-man. One way is to immediately put Maeda on the 60-day, since it is doubtful he will be back. Also, to make hard decisions on the probable return, or need to return, of Thorpe and Pineda.

 

Of course, Dobnak and Farrell also means a couple of people have to leave the current roster.

 

Who goes. W already sent out Garcia and Barraclough, both who could also be 40-man removed. Law MIGHT get a chance to pitch in the majors again, but he also could be 40-man removed. But none of those three are on the current roster, which is down two rotation arms (unless you count Gant). The Twins need to add at least one starter (Strotman next BECAUSE he is on the 40-man), but who leaves. Wait, we can add two players to the roster come September 1. So I see Strotman being one. 

 

But the another should be Ryan, but then you need a roster spot. They should also promote Jovani Moran. Okay, who leaves the now 28-man roster. Whew. My mind is numb.

And hopefully Balazovic to the Saints. Maybe at some point, switch out him and Jax, to at least get a couple of starts for a hot prospect.

 

Dobnak and Farrell are complicating things! Look out Rooker and Cave!

With the way Strotman has pitched in St Paul, maybe instead of a promotion, he should be removed from the the 40 man.

The Twins outrighted him to the minors in 2018 after he pitched 5 innings for them, even though his career ERA in the minors at the time was under 2.00.   His FIP with the team was 3.36.

The Twins gave him 13 pitches in 2019, putting him in once with the bases loaded.  He walked two guys and hit someone with a pitch, which is certainly not great, but would any of us put a rookie in that situation?  Probably not.  Although we did not notice this at the time, we know now that Baldelli has the tendency to put pitchers in situations where they have no chance to succeed.  The pitcher then gets sent to the minors when they predictably fail.

Vasquez played fine this year in St. Paul.

I think whatever it is the Twins don't like about Vasquez probably does not have much to do with his ability.  We can only hope this dislike does not stem from something nonsensical/petty.  Either way, I would not be in any way shocked if Vasquez turns into a good relief pitcher in the MLB.  Presumably the Dodgers would not be surprised either.

Rooker hit the paternity list earlier today, allowing for Barraclough to be called up. He and Gibaut remain on the 40 man... for some reason.

CBS sports claims that Barnes was called up as the 29th man, and Albers was actually called up for Gant.

For the record, MLB's own site currently says the extra player for doubleheaders rule doesn't apply after August 31st, and I wasn't able to find a rule or announcement stating otherwise, so that's what I based my earlier post on. Here's the link and text (emphasis mine):

clubs have a 26-man active Major League roster but are allowed to recall one additional player who is on the 40-man roster to serve as the 27th member for the day of a doubleheader. That player accrues one day of MLB service time and is returned to the Minor Leagues following the completion of the doubleheader. This rule is in effect from Opening Day through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 through the end of the regular season, all clubs must carry 28 players. The active roster reverts back to 26 players during the postseason.

But apparently the August 31st part of the rule got waived for 2020 -- teams were allowed a "29th man" for doubleheaders in Sep. 2020 -- and I guess it's been quietly waived again for September 2021. If it's COVID-related, perhaps the "29th man" will go away in Sep. 2022.

Simmons is on the restricted list because he cannot travel to Canada (more accurately, cannot travel outside the US) without resetting the progress he has made in becoming a permanent US resident.

Rooker is back from the paternity list, and they’ve added Nick Vincent to the 40 man and called him up again. Albers to AAA and Simmons restricted. The Twins have given every mediocre reliever in AAA a chance and then some!
