Does it count as an option year if they call him up today? Will it count tomorrow? I am sure that is the reason to wait.

Don't you use the option when you send the player back down? Hence a player was "optioned" to AAA?

I still think O’Rourke will be called up too. He’d need a 40-man spot, as well.

That might get tricky.

 

I guess the theory might be that Graterol or O'Rourke would only get added to the postseason roster if another pitcher gets injured in September? Then they could 60-day IL Gordon and Poppen to open their 40-man spots, and petition to replace whoever else gets injured.

 

But, if you want Graterol or O'Rourke to be able to make the postseason roster without further injuries, you'd need to keep Gordon and Poppen on the 10-day IL so you could petition to replace their postseason eligibility as previously discussed. Then the actual 40-man spots would have to come from DFA'ing Diplan and... Stewart?

Correct. And we have no reason to send Graterol down anymore at this point in 2019 (especially not for the 20 days required to burn an option year).

 

Could be an issue with potentially adding players earlier in the season, but not by August 31st anymore.

Guessing Miller is up for 2 reasons:

1] Spare OF who can play CF for September for rest and to help cover for Buxton for a few more days.

 

2] And probably more to the point, remote but possible post season last man on the bench PR option.

 

Let me also edit my earlier post that I am NOT getting myself excited for Graterol on the post season roster.

 

EXCITED for his potential and a chance to gain ML experience to get ready for 2020. And who knows, he might blow the doors off this thing! But no matter his potential and ability, I just don't EXPECT him to adjust to MLB and the different baseball in September and suddenly be a difference maker in the post season.

Ian Miller is coming up for the same reasons people wanted Billy Hamilton - he's fast, can steal bases, and should be a capable CF. Neither of them can hit, but that doesn't seem to be necessary for the roles they will play.

 

I don't quite understand the 40 man issue with getting Graterol up, but I'm confident he will be eligible for the playoffs. 

 

At the moment, it does not appear any non-40 man players will also be making the trip (Alcala/O'Rourke) but that remains to be seen.

60-day IL players don't have to be activated until after the conclusion of the World Series -- the same time as free agency declaration.

I have no problem with getting his feet wet for a couple games and then start upping the leverage.   He will give up ruins.   Everyone gives up runs but it would be nice to see him come up assimilate quickly.   

 

Agreed... start him in in some low leverage innings but certainly don't assume that leverage can't be increased... But again, they have Rogers, Romo, Dyson, Duffey and May who are all really good and can cover the 7th-9th innings... If Graterol or any of these guys are good right away, it's just a bonus.

A few will come up Sunday (Graterol, Miller, probably Astudillo, maybe a couple others.

 

A few more will come up on Tuesday. Rochester plays its final game on Monday and then more will get promoted.

 

Lewis Thorpe will be added to teh roster in 4-5 days, when his 10 days are up.

So I think I'm finally getting this. There's the 40 man roster we're mostly all familiar with then there's the almost entirely but not necessarily completely overlapping playoff eligible list. In order to be added to the second list after Sept 1, 2 things must happen. 1) you must be added to the 40 man roster and 2) you must replace an individual from the playoff eligible list who a) currently on the IL and B) eligible to be activated (more than 10 or 60 days on IL).

 

I was confused because I took "replaced" to mean from the 40 man roster rather than the playoff eligible list. I didn't think you could remove someone from your roster while on the IL. But you're actually not. You're replacing a seperate cut from the 40 man while replacing a different player on the playoff eligible list.

 

So... moving Gordon to the 60 day would free up a roster spot for Graterol while keeping Poppen on the 10 day would allow Graterol to take his spot on the playoff eligible list.

 

Did I get that right? So who can be DFA or moved to 60 and who do we have on the 40 who is on the IL who will be eligible to be activated by playoffs?

I think you are correct.

 

In his Graterol story Saturday, Lavelle suggested Poppen would move to the 60-day DL to make room for Graterol. Which would pretty much leave Gordon as the only guy left to be petitioned to replaced for postseason eligibility -- every other injured player on the 40-man is already on rehab and presumably headed toward activation. (Well, hopefully Buxton is still headed toward activation!)

 

Of course, someone could get injured in the meantime too, although I don't see much need to dip down into the minors for a postseason replacements unless it is a disaster catcher scenario (i.e. two catchers injured). In that case, we'd probably have to DFA Diplan (or 60-day IL one injured catcher) to open a 40-man spot, and 10-day IL the other injured catcher to petition Wilin Rosario as postseason eligible replacement.

As an aside: you actually can remove a player from your roster while injured / on the IL. You just have to release them -- you can't option them or outright them.

 

Basically, you can't leverage their injured status to sneak them off the 40-man but retain control -- outright -- or to pay them less and deprive them of service time -- option.

 

But you can release them (or trade them), and thus relinquish control over them.

To follow-up on my earlier comment with a timely example: today the Brewers released Jeremy Jeffress, who was currently on the IL. They still owe him his full salary, of course, but he is no longer on their roster and is a free agent.

Tough call on the nickname. Bruiser? Grat Cat? Bruno? Baldelli will probably go with Grats or something dead simple. It will be nice to see a Twins pitcher make the radar gun sputter sparks. May he break in a hundred catcher's mitts! May he follow through with his glove ready for a high-speed come-backer!

 

We're not asking much of this flame-throwing kid. Just be yourself, enjoy your cuppa coffee, dot the corners with 100 mph fastballs, and, of course, kill Superman.
