They could, but he'd be ineligible for the postseason because he wasn't in the org on Sep. 1st, and he'd be a free agent again at the end of the season anyway because he's past 6 years service time. So signing him right now would basically just be helping him audition for his next contract this offseason. (He was also on the injured list when the Brewers released him -- presumably it wasn't serious and he could be activated now, but his recent poor performance might be the more serious concern!)

Follow-up on Jeffress: MLBTR reports some interest in him, which is surprising to me:

Of course, all of the clubs mentioned except the Rays have less than 10% postseason odds at this point per Fangraphs, so they might be looking to shift gears towards 2020 planning.
