The Kernels noted that Byron Buxton will again not be in the Kernels tonight. 

 

I heard on Sunday night that when Buxton struck out in his third plate appearance, he winced in some pain. So yes, weather conditions were part of the reason that he didn't play on Monday night... but it clearly is more than that. Hopefully nothing too serious. But obviously he won't be in the Twins lineup in the next few days.

When he first went out, the timetable was “early” September. That probably hasn’t changed.

Must be a pretty serious pain if he can't play. Hopefully he recovers quickly. The Twins are a better team with him in the field and lineup. Need him for the final playoff push and hopefully the ALDS.

Is that Syndergaard for Buxton deal still on the table?

 

If it was a straight up one for one, I think the Twins missed on this one. Buxton is a solid player, but he spends wayyy to much time on the IL every year. Doubt he signs long term with the Twins and pitching is more difficult to find than it is a solid center fielder. Especially considering the imminent move for Lewis to the outfield; specifically center field.

Hard to read this and feel hopeful about a return in the next week or two. Twins are pretty cautious with Bux and I can't imagine them calling him back to the MLB squad until he's at least 2 weeks pain-free. Rats.

They have no reason to push him.  Any pain or discomfort, get him out of there.

Not to mention that Buxton's defense makes all of your pitchers better. Let him get healthy and he will be a big late season addition.

Twins have zero pitchers that are near Syndergaard's performance level. Pitchers are more difficult to come by. Easier to replace Buxton than it is to develop a pitcher like Syndergaard.

You're right. Buxton is an extremely important member of this team, let's hope it's just a little setback.

This kind of devalues the "give him time" angle.  Next year is his 26 year old season and it will be his sixth with this team.  Speed guys don't have a very long shelf life and ones with concussion/migraine issues and injury problems especially.

 

It is starting to feel like his career might not be as long as expected and it is starting to feel like his time to shine is going to be a small window.  That is, unless he learns.

 

And I am losing faith in that

Cave is having a 1.427 OPS the last 10 games.   I'd take that.  They better let Buxton heal and not rush him.

To Cave's credit, he has been very good lately. Good for him. Now, with Gonzalez being out for a TBD amount of time, the OF depth is really in question. Probably will see Arraez back out there...good thing September 1st is right around the corner.

Agreed.

 

At this point, I am hoping he is back by September 6. The immediate 9 games the Twins play starting that day will be huge (home for Cleveland, home for Washington, at Cleveland).

Is Lamont Wade healed? His bat may not play in the majors, but at least he is a true outfielder. Put Marwin on the IL and bring Wade up if he is healthy. This really hurts with Marwin going down and Buxton tweaking his shoulder again.

For purely selfish reasons, i hope he can play against Boston.

 

For purely shellfish reasons, i wish he had an exoskeleton to protect him on impact... but that would undoubtedly slow him down.

 

As i try not to be selfish (nor shellfish) i sure hope he gets better at his own pace. He takes some things extra fast, it would only be expect he'll take other things at a more normal pace.

I've never wavered in my support of Buxton.

Even at his very lowest points, when it seemed most had turned, or at least tempered their expectations, I never wavered once.

 

But man, he just simply cannot manage to stay on the field. He couldn't even manage one rehab game without getting hurt.

 

Whether it's bad luck, poor awareness, or a lack of durability, some athletes just never manage to stay on the field. Hopefully Buxton isn't one of them, but at this point I'm not particularly hopeful.

Are we all assuming that Marwin has/had more than an upset stomach? I suppose it makes sense to give him a day off if that is so. I think the team can survive for a few days without Marwin, but to place him on the Injured List means he won't be available until about September 8th. Going short with outfielders until Saturday and then returning both Wade and Astudillo might be the right call. They will still have Rosario, Kepler and Cave all healthy with Arraez and Adrianza available to fill in.

That's putting a lot of faith in an unknown commodity. Lewis has never played center field and is not hitting worth a darn at AA. A lot of "we'll see" left in that prospect.

Learns what?

 

The Twins are 57-25 with Buxton and 23-26 without him.

 

It would be great if he could play 150 games but if he plays 100 the Twins are still coming up ahead, no?

 

Perhaps its fans who need to learn.
