Front Page: Trade Deadline: What if the Twins Do Nothing?

Because we will never know the cost to acquire [beloved Player X] via trade, it is hard to say that I will be upset if the Twins do not make another acquisition. For every player that is reportedly available, there is a price that I would be unhappy if the Twins pay it--even with the benefit of adding that player to the 2019 roster (and presumably increasing the odds of playoffs/playoff wins). Because of that, I can't honestly feel more than  general  disappointment that something didn't work out. I'd need information that I will never have to feel anger or betrayed. 

 

Generally, I agree with you, but the existence of Ian Kennedy and his contract makes us relatively sure that if the Twins were willing to pony up money (and almost nothing in terms of prospects), they could make a significant improvement to the bullpen. 

 

For most other guys, I agree with you. You never know what other teams are asking for.

That's fair, although anticipating high prices is also part of a GM's job. That should have been a factor when selling Pressly a year ago, and making Blake Parker our only offseason pen acquisition.

Yes and with the little pitching we have signed for next year, this may very well be the best opportunity to make a deep run in the playoffs. I have no confidence that the offense will be as potent as it is this year. If we, who lack the expertise in baseball knowledge to run a front office, know that the bullpen is doomed in the playoffs, then the guys running the show have to know that they need help in the bullpen. Or if they value the prospects that highly, then they better turn out to be some pretty damn good players.

And then once we regress when will the “window” be open for us to compete for a World Series? Will the FO even then be willing to make the call to “go for it”? This year is one of those years, so why cower and not make a big splash?

No I wouldn't fire them before the season is over, but if they somehow miss the playoffs or don't win the division because the relief core is not adequate and that is an obvious reason for not winning the division.

So what’s the strategy for getting better starting pitching? Expecting Graterol, Balazovic, or Duran to pan out as an ace? If that’s the strategy then the Twins FO are a bunch of fools because there’s absolutely no guarantee any of the 3 mentioned pitchers will attain top rotation status. It’s more likely all 3 flop or like Gibson fall short of their potential. So what that means is the rotation for years could very well be Berríos and 4 #5 starters. That will not work to win a World Series.

Because 1.) We're Twins fans, and 2.) they're fun to watch and follow.

At a certain point, if they're never ever going to even try to win it all, what's the point?

 

This is 2006 all over again, and our next shot might be in 2032. And if this goes as expected and Favley is still around, he'll cling to his prospects and dream of 2035.

What is it about year 4 that makes you say that? Almost all of our top 10 prospects are at AA or higher. With a reasonable hit rate and the remaining players from our current roster, the window should be longer than 3 years. Not that I think that should preclude us from acting aggressively now, I’m just curious why you think the window is that short.

Because that's just usually how it works out. Cleveland isn't going anywhere and Chicago might be very good in 2 years.
