Ervin Santana?

What's the story on him? I know the Twins elected not to give him the option for 14 mill. But I was just curious as to whether or not he finally healed from that finger thing and or has there been any interest in him out there and if so how much?

Would he be worth 3 - 5 mill if healthy?? And since the Twins rejected his option would they even be able to negotiate?? I'm sure the player after being rejected probably wouldn't want to come back, but I was just wondering. Mainly because I haven't heard anything about him.

I imagine someone who needs a #5 will make him an offer. How he performs in the spring will probably determine if he plays and how much.

This assumes of course he still wants to play. He might not, he's a family guy and he saved most of his money.

I would think if his finger injury allows that he isn't that far removed from being pretty dominant? But there just hasn't been much talk about him that I have seen, so I'm assuming that he must be close to done?

I think the risk is only money. He will either be a reliable starter or not close to a number 5. If he has his velocity sign him and see if he can maintain it through the spring and into the season.

He won't get anything more than a minor league with spring training invite offer. If he doesn't gain the lost 3 MPH on his fastball he's toast.

If the Twins are going to add a starter, it needs to be somebody who can at least be a #3 starter. I don't see him rebounding to be better than Odorizzi/Pineda and I'd rather have the back-end spots of the rotation belong to Mejia/Romero. I'll pass.

So far, every post, including this one, contains the word "if". :)

Which pretty much sums things up regarding ESan.

Santana is probably going to be a late signing for some team in March after he has a few throwing sessions to convince teams that he's healthy. I could also see him getting a minor league invite with a nice amount of cash if he makes the team out of ST.

Posted

If... :) ...if I knew the Twins would sign Cruz, I would have liked to see them pick up ESan's option, or since the option was way overprice, maybe open a dialogue with Santana's side about an extension, say in the 2/16 range.

I've liked Santana and still do. He is a bright, driven guy who will carve a niche if necessary with the drop in velocity.

Problem with Santana is you never know what you are going to get. I was done with him after the 2017 wild card when he was posted a 3-0 lead and acted like he had no idea what to do with it.

He made his pitches in that game, just fine. It just didn't turn out too hot.

Starting 5 looks pretty set to me

1)Berrios

2)Gibson

3)Odor

4)Pineda

5)Mejia

I know it takes more than 5 to finish a season; Romero, Gonzo, Stewart, Thorpe, Slegers, and DeJong are all waiting for their chance next.

Thor or one of the Indians starters are the only needle movers rumored to be available.

I don't want anything to do with Santana, but I would say your 5 there look far from set. 4, we have no clue what we will get from the guy and 5 has been hurt a ton, plus hasn't been super great even when he's been here.

I'd say that 4 and 5 spot are wide open. Could go to someone in a trade or FA, or there are about 4-5 guys that will fight it out.

Did he?

Well, um, :)

I will say in the 1st inning, he almost had Gregorius struck out. Then earlier on the 3-2 pitch to Judge, Santana made a great pitch, a slider low and away, Judge flailed at it but hit it for a single anyway. MLB coded that hit as a line drive and that's how it reads on all the play-by-play logs, but it only left Judge's bat at 72.5 MPH.

But yeah, if "ifs and buts were candies and nuts".......

We all saw the looks on many players' faces last year -- the Twins clubhouse was a depressing place to be. Ervin had the same look.

Some of you seem worried he would come back to play for the Twins. I would say don't worry. I'm guessing he's running away as fast as he can.

Though I can't find it now, I thought I saw a report that Santana's velocity hadn't come back and he was waiting to hold throwing sessions with teams hoping that with more time he might regain at least some of what he lost. Basically the Santana from last season with an 88-90mph fastball gave up way too many hard hit balls to be successful. He will eventually sign with somebody, but I don't have much hope he will ever get back to being a capable major league starter again.

Twins are turning a new page in 2019. No Mauer, a new manager, and fish or cut bait for Sano and Buxton. Parting ways with Santana should be part of this process. Shouldn't even go as far as wondering whether or not his fast ball will come back.

As far as his effort in the playoff game was concerned, I seem to recall that the strike zone was a place that he was afraid to go anywhere near.

They have Berrios, Gibson, and Odorizzi.

They signed Pineda to be a starter this season. Even if he flops:

Mejía, Romero, Stewart, Gonsalves: one of them will hopefully emerge. My money is on Mejía.

I'd invest in another rubber-armed reliever who can make 70+ appearances. Hildenberger broke down from too much work. Rogers did not.

I've seen the Red Sox are in on Cody Allen - the Twins should definitely try to get him on board. He can pitch often, and would give a real boost to a bullpen with lots of questions.

Romero showed some flashes last year and he also flamed out a few times too, but so did Berrios his first couple of times up, Romero just might not be as durable as Berrios. Nonetheless I feel that he might get that 5th spot. My gut feeling tells me that the Twins will roll with what they got, hopefully they add a piece or two to the bullpen, but if they go with what they have they will feel it out and if they are in contention they will probably go all in and get that starter in late July or at the deadline. I feel like that is what they are going to do because of the Lance Lynn failures last year. I think if they are in it they will go all in and get that guy with the extra dollars that they have right now.

I don’t want to see the Twins take flyers with guys unless it’s a Pineda type deal. I think we’re mostly past that point in the team’s progression.

Go find good players with an established performance baseline. The money is there to do it.

Ervin Santana is a gamer and he, like Cruz would help any team. Lets ask Berrios how much he learned from being around Santana. After he was shut down last year for comments he made after he had just pitched 5 2/3 innings is one of the reasons i question the common sense of the "new" FO. ITS LIKE ....DONT EVER publically question our knowledge or decisions. If he was so still injured why the H€LL did you just throw him out there? He's never coming back here as long as Falvine pulls the puppet strings.

And ...ive said it before....Lance Lynn had no spring training last year. He was arguably the best starter we had up until he was traded. Look at the line he had on the day they traded Escobar to the D-Backs. He won a 3-2 game AT Fenway Park. Man! He sure would look good as our #4 starter with Pineda #5. its too late now...just like it is with Ervin (dont call me Johann) Santana

Refresh my memory, I thought Lynn was a one year deal last year?

This was debunked as simply factually incorrect last year, not sure why you continue to claim this.

1) His last start before being shut down he lasted just 4 innings, not 5 2/3.

2) He was shut down after HE complained of renewed pain is his finger. Are you asking the FO to risk his career, and force him to keep pitching through injury?

3) He had to receive more PRP treatments after he was shut down. Your theory would have us believe that the FO forced him to have medical treatment, for an injury that didn't exist, against his will.

4) His velocity was down 4 mph, and getting worse. Does that sound like someone who is healthy?

5) He made his final start 6 days after he publicly questioned the FO. If shutting him down was retribution, then why did they allow him to make another start?

Questioning the FO is fine, they've done plenty of questionable things.

Inventing something that's not just baseless, but easily proven to be factually incorrect, shouldn't be allowed.

Thanks. That timeline didn’t jive with my memory but I didn’t feel like looking it up.

I agree that Lynn prob would have been better with a full spring training. Santana was not the same last year, that is kinda why I asked if anyone had heard if he was back to normal, throwing hard etc...
