Joe Mauer passed Rod Carew on the all-time Twins hit list with a fifth-inning single Friday night at Target Field. With 2,086 hits, he now trails only Kirby Puckett on the Minnesota Twins franchise leaderboard. I’m sure he would have preferred to reach that milestone in a victory, but unfortunately the Twins fell to Oakland 7-1.Snapshot (chart via FanGraphs)

Jake Odorizzi pitched seven innings … wait, hold up, that can’t be right.

 

Odo, as was on his Player’s Weekend jersey, managed to hold Oakland to two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, throwing 108 pitches in the process. This was the first time Odorizzi recorded an out in the seventh inning for the Twins. The last time he completed seven innings was July 17, 2017.

 

The bullpen was not as good. Not at all. Oliver Drake gave up three runs in the eighth and then Addison Reed gave up a pair of runs in the ninth.

 

Mauer’s big milestone hit was the highlight of the night for the bats, as the only run of the game for the Twins was driven in on a Miguel Sano sacrifice fly. Memorable accomplishment for Joe, forgettable night for the Twins.

Bullpen was awful tonight. Please bring up Reed, Curtiss and Anderson. Can you select 3 BP guys to be sent down and/or released? I can.

If we could see more 7 inning outings from Odorizzi, then I'd be on board bringing him back next season. Still, the bullpen found a way to implode in his longest start of the year. Time for Addison to hit the DL and see if he can come back for next season at full strength.

Sometimes the pen has a bad night.

 

Sometimes the SP has a bad game.

 

Sometimes the offense or defense has a bad night/game. It happens!

 

And I wouldn't throw Drake under the bus for a bad game. Again, it happens.

 

And maybe, maybe, the FO really thinks they stumbled on a find they can fix. (To be fair, in SSS, he's done well so far and has good SO-IP in his career). But hes bounced around to so many teams for how long now? I get it, why not look at him for now in a lost season.

 

But, for whatever reason, Reed is toast right now. Drake is a flier at best. But the arms in Rochester are what? Inconsistent? Compared to Reed and Drake? So who might actually be young enough to work with and have potential vs someone who might be on his last chance? And who might have potential to step forward for the future if the franchise if given a chance?

We all love Joe, but the strip is leading a 7-1 loss glorifying hit 2086?  Let the blogs glorify him, but the twins took a beating...the lead should say, twins get destroyed, Joe hits milestone.

 

It's just words but maybe I still hate losing.

Rod Carew 3,053 hits.  The only reason he went elsewhere was Calvin Griffith's racism.  Joe has a long ways to go to beat Carew.

What is wrong with Addison Reed, Oliver has a history of not continuing his production, but we have Reed next year - how does he get fixed?

 

I would say more, but what is there to say except bring up the young guys and test the waters, what we have is not working.

Mauer also trails Sam Rice, Clyde Milan, and Joe Judge, but alas the franchise record omits mention of time served with the old Senators.

 

Coincidentally, 2086 is also Killebrew's career total, only a tiny portion of which was not with this franchise.

He's arbitration eligible, but there's no reason not to bring him back. He's a solid back of the rotation guy who gives up a few too many hits and walks to be great. If he dropped 1 walk per 9 and 1 hit per 9 while keeping the K/9 where they're at this year (nearly a career high) he'd be a very nice pitcher. As it is, he's useful but not someone you give a multiyear deal to. But having a guy like him while you develop your younger guys with more upside is a good idea. I'm baffled by the idea he wouldn't be considered for the rotation next year.

Dirty shame that they lost on a night when Odorizzi pitched his best game of the year.  

 

And congrats to Mauer.  Hopefully, he will sign on for two more years (or two one year contracts) so that he can have the most hits of any Minnesota Twin.  Got to expect 2400-2500 hits would also give him a much better chance for the Hall.

And Griffith's frugality. Carew immediately got a massive pay increase when he went to the Angels.

Carew left because of racist things Calvin said and money. It took Joe nearly 600 more at bats to get those hits compared to Carew. Carew had a .334 ave with the Twins (12 years) compared to Joe's .306 (15 years).

Not shabby at all.   Pre concussion it was about .320.    As far as HOF goes it might be one of those rare cases where longevity hurts his chances.

Gonsalves has another chance tonight, let's see if he makes this count. I've been hearing "wait 'til Gonsalves gets here" and "Gonsalves should be the Twins' #3 starter" all year long...I think many of us are eager to see this much-hyped prospect do the thing he's supposed to do. How about 7 shut-out innings tonight, no walks and 8 K's?
