Bullpen: Who you got at this point?

Sounds about right.

As disappointed as I am about Berrios, I would also be disappointed if the odd man out between Meija and Duffey were to take that final bullpen spot. I still like both those guys as potential starters.

Haley needs to be sent back to the Red Sox

He has not earned a spot on the 25 man roster

13.2 IP
17 Hits
9 earned runs
6.08 era

That's better than both Phil Hughes and Hector Santiago ;)   Nah you cannot take into consideration ST numbers than much.

As far as the OP goes, that's about it, other than Duffey over Wimmers.   Mejia outperformed Duffey all spring and we had 191 inning of Duffey staring in the majors to know that Duffey is not a starter.

If I see Tonkin and/or Buddy go up North, I might O'Rourke a bit.

I'd rather the loser of Duffey/Mejia start in AAA for now. I'm not ready to close the book on Duffey as a starter personally.  I know some are, and I understand that, but I'd give him more time. I suspect in the not so distant future, Hughes will be in the pen anyways, so keep him stretched out for now.

As for my pen, I'd keep Tonkin for now over Wimmers who isn't on the 40 man. I'm fine making that swap, but I'm willing to let Tonkin get another chance first.

ST was Haley's chance to show he was big league ready....he's NOT

Most of the Red Wings had better numbers than him last year in the same league

Guess by your thinking it doesn't matter

At some point numbers don't lie

I am not happy with the composition of the bullpen.  Haley does not impress, Wimmers is a schock, hopefully Kintzler does not have a Jepsen second year, and Pressly is not as consistent as I would like.  You are probably right, but it is not a pen I really like.

I think the main mistake was signing Belisle instead of trying for one of the rebound closers. Leaves the bullpen much weaker.

Pressly, Rogers and Kintzler are by no means great, but they are representative setup men. Add a long man, a second lefty and then hopefully someone emerges for the last spot (ahem, Chargois) to go with the closer and you can scratch a pen out of that.

if he was big league ready the Red Sox wouldn't have let him go rule 5. The criteria isn't if he shows you enough to be the 5th starter or mop up guy, but if he shows you enough upside and/or you think you can fix him, to be worth stashing on your 25 man roster.

I don't know the answer there, but a success could mean a lot for 2018 as the roster is constructed we could see a very similar rotation in 2018 to 2017.

Can Falvey and Allen fix Haley? I would be interested to see them try.

I am glad they didn't send Viola, Baker or Radke to the pen after their first two years.

Unlike Duffey, all of the above had more than 2 pitches and did ok the second and third time around a batting order.

There is no comparison...

Forgive my ignorance, I always assumed that Radke, Viola and Baker were starters when they were amateurs and had 3 pitches when they became big leaguers

And I thought Duffey was varying his stuff, throwing a CU now, and perhaps looking like he's figuring some things out. And let's not obscure the point, which is that it might be a bit early to call it quits on Duffey as a starter. The Twins seem to think so.

Why should we try to "fix" Haley when we have better options in AAA that have actually proved it as Twins minor leagues

If they can fix a guy, why not fix the guy that throws 98 (Chargois) instead of the guy that throws 88 (Haley)

If we keep Haley that just proves the FO is making decisions based on their egos. They chose Haley

So unbelievably disappointed and surprised by Chargois. Was he trying too hard? Really thought he had it figured out end of last season.

Belisle may be solid/excellent, but I also would have gone the bounce back closer route, maybe over Kintzler.

NOT interested in Haley at this point. Could Wimmers be the long man?

Ugh! Give me the Chargois I hoped for and expected, even with Kintzler, and I feel so much better. Right now...again Ugh!

drjim's original prediction sounds about right, other than swapping out Wimmers for Tonkin/waiver wire add.

What an uninspiring group of names.

Looks like Wimmers was sent out, so Tonkin will take the last spot.

Not what I chose, but I can live with it to start the season. Pretty much re-shuffling mediocrity anyways.

Yep. The real test is going to begin in a week.... How quick will the FO and/or Molly pull the plug on some of these uninspiring names?

They're well beyond when they should have been moving Duffey to the 'pen (I've been preaching that since he was starting in the minors). He'd be closing for them this year if they had.

That said, if he's the 5th starter, I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.

I would have gave up on Tonkin. Love Wimmers' story, but he doesn't need to break camp with team. Haven't been that impressed with Haley, but ST is ST, let him make his case to stick in real game action.

There are going to be so many changes to the bullpen this year I don't think it really matters who goes north right now.

Concur, Steve. Ideally I want the Twins to shuffle through all 14-15 options they have this season to see who will stick, and who can go.

If, for example, Craig Breslow is still hanging on in late May with a 4.50 ERA, then I'll be upset.

Duffey will likely end up there. But probably still worth another shot to see if he can make it as a starter, especially considering the alternatives.

I think your last sentence is accurate for starters too. They are going to churn through several options to see what they have on all levels. Not sure if that makes me more intrigued or horrified.

Under. Whelmed.

if they don't shuffle thru the players in AA and AAA to see what they have, as Van states, well, then they'll never know. I have zero interest in this bullpen at all given the current names.

Yup, and now that it looks like Tonkin and Haley are making the bullpen, there's little question in my mind that this is one of the worst bullpens in all of baseball. We really need the bullpen prospects to step things up or we're gonna be in for another really long season.

Yeah, I would have sent Tonkin and his HR's allowed to the open market. Wimmers could have taken Tonkin's 40-man spot.

Duffey should remain a starter. His change-up is coming along nicely this spring.
