Byron Buxton?

Just curious what changed with Byron Buxton. I know September baseball is not as competitive if teams are out of the playoff race. But it sure is nice to see him finally playing well and hopefully gaining confidence for next year.

"We may need to rethink what we are trying to do with Buxton, given all the power he is showing lately."

Anybody else hear this quote from Molitor after the game tonight?

Obviously being moved to the clean up spot.

Is that the same thing they tried to do with Gomez?  I feel like maybe he went to Rochester and just stopped giving a s*%#.  Don't think meat, you'll only hurt the team.  I love watching Buxton fly, but watching him jog is better.  Save that energy for the outfield.

Way too many here on TD have already given up on Buck. He will be the real deal and will put in the work and time to be a star. He has always made our D so much better, but if he can put up close to the numbers he did in the minors for a whole season the Twins are so much better. He has shown his power lately and hopefully soon he will show his disruptive nature on the basepaths. If we pick up any decent pitching in the offseason, maybe we don't have to wait 2-5 years for respectability?!

I hope this is it and not something else.

I hope it is something else and not this. We should not be thinking of Buxton as a power hitter, not at age 22. If he continues to hit well he needs to be at the top of the lineup. I could change my mind in a few years if he hits 25 or 30 dingers in a season, but even then I'd bat him third with Sano in the cleanup spot.

let Buck be Buck and let him keep the leg kick as long as it's working. I just don't want the Twins to try turning him into a slap ground ball hitter just because they feel he has the potential to beat out a lot of infield ground balls.

Lets just hope he plays smart and stays healthy. Plus lets see what happens for a month, and the beginning of next year, this a pretty small sample size.

True Story:

Fangraphs has Buxton at 0.6 WAR and Baseball Reference has him at 1.5 WAR for the season. That is for 234 PAs. Extrapolated out to a 550 PA season (assuming he's going to be hitting earlier in the lineup but also be injured for at least a little while each season due to his disregard for his body in the outfield) and he is already at somewhere between 1.4 to 3.5 WAR per full season.

Living near Chicago I was forced to listen to Hawk (and happy to listen to Steve Stone) over the weekend.  They were raving about Buxton, and started Thursday in his first at-bat.  They noticed the leg kick, they talked about the soft landing, and Hawk just went nuts about how much better he look, how much more confident his swings were, etc.  On Sunday Stone gave Hawk huge credit for noticing within a couple of at-bats on Thursday (one a homer, one a pop-up) how much better his swing was, and how it had carried through for four games.

You know it's a big deal, because if there's one thing Steve Stone hates, it's giving Ken Harrelson credit for anything good...anyway, those guys thought this was a big change, not just a little hot streak based on nothing.  Fun to hear.

Do I need to start putting sarcasm emoji's?

I expect more from you people.

I hate emojis and like HTML.  Just close the tag  </sarc>

I'm with him on that.  I saw on the highlights from yesterday that Hawk turned 75.  He's gotta be getting close to retirement, doesn't he?  I know sportscasters tend to keep going forever, but it's OK with the good ones.

I can't say I heard it, but hopefully it means they are going to stop trying to turn him into Willie Wilson let him be Willie Mays instead.  He's a 5-tool guy. Let him use all 5, instead of trying to force the one tool that's most obvious at his age.

He stopped listening to the advice he was getting from all the different big league coaches and started doing what feels comfortable in the box.

Sometimes the coaches need to shut up and let a player play - they come in with a natural talent and then start being told about their step, their swing, their need to adjust and many other things that everyone thinks is perfect information.  But the adjustment period is about comfort and letting the player use natural talent for the first period is really important.  I think about how many of our young players do great in the minors and then come to the majors where the springs are sprung and the wheels fall off.  What is happening in the transition. I listened to an ESPN http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17466600 interview with Granderson who states that the Mets do a good job of integrating their minor leaguers and having a culture where call ups fit right in.   Can that be said about the Twins?

I'm sure we'll all be hearing "mishandled" a lot this offseason as more people break down what went wrong here.

Glad that Buxton is finally putting together a good streak at the plate.

At this point, next year looks to be quite interesting.

Good thing Kepler finally got in his ear to tell him how to overcome the total mismanagement per fangraphs.
