Danny Santana

Let's just keep this short and not sweet. Why is he on this team? All the poor guy does is make mental mistakes and brings almost zero value to this team. He starts that stolen base attempt tonight by getting a bad jump, he then looks in and finally, he slides in and didn't even get his hand on the base until he was on the side of the bag.

Actually, I could be totally imagining this, but I seem to remember Molitor took Santana on as a pet project while he was still in the minors. I imagine not playing him or releasing him would be admitting that he failed in helping him develop.

We know Molly's job is safe in 2017, so we also know who else's job is safe in 2017...

I dunno, I'm more worried about getting Berrios, Chargois, and Polanco up to the majors right now, and since Santana isn't blocking anyone right now, I'm not worried about him.

I once chatted with a Coach in the Twins organization that told me Danny was a cry baby. He told me he told him to quit being a ..... No Joke

He shouldn't be playing often, and he definitely shouldn't be hitting at the top of the order, but as far as backup outfielders go, he is pretty cheap.

Santana is blocking Polanco.

After Danny Santana was caught stealing to end the game tonight, Molitor basically said Santana just got a bad jump because of the 3-2 count, and Santana is probably the team's best base stealer.

Oh, well in that case.....sigh.

One reason D. Santana is still on the team is that he provides a significant amount of roster flexibility.  This allowed the Twins to send both Rosario and Buxton to the minors to get their act together.  To carry an extra pitcher.  It is a good idea to have a super utility player.  The problem is that Santana does not do anything particularly well.

Santana makes plenty mistakes, a lot I think from seeming lack of confidence. But this wasn't one of them. Molitor wanted him to run on a 3-2, but Santana sure didn't want to get picked off first. So a medium lead is in order, not a straight up steal lead. If Molitor wanted a straight steal he should have done it earlier in the count. To repeat, DanSan can be a walking disaster, but this wasn't one of them. And he isn't blocking Polanco. At this time that honor goes to Dozier, with EE and Nunez as close runners up.

Santana is 11 of 19 stealing bases this year, and if I remember correctly, 1 of the 11 was when he was picked off 1st and the 1st baseman couldn't get the ball out of his glove to throw down to 2nd.

Frightening that Molitor thinks this stuff

not surprising he thinks that though because, well, Santana is fast.  he should have been fired too.

You'd think managers and GMs would take more pride in winning than having pet projects succeed....

Even without qualifying it, 11 of 19 is tragic. That's to the point where you shouldn't be trying to steal anymore.

Well past that point... The break even point for steals of 2nd base based on run expectancy is around 75%... With Santana currently sitting at 57.8%.

He's bad at defense, bad at base stealing, and bad at hitting. Other than that, he totally is a great MLB player.

Molitor's love for him is exhibit X on why he should be gone, but, hey, the owner says his future boss doesn't get to make that decision......so, ya.

Sorry, this versatilty, roster flexibility thing just goes over my head. If he has absolutely no value at any position or in any situation, how is this even remotely a good thing?

Versatility does not count when you are bad at all the things that qualify you as versatile.

Santana is blocking Polanco.

For a bench spot? Maybe. I was talking about a spot at SS or 2B where he can get ABs, and neither are open for him.

Generally I agree. If he was used as a backup that is fine. But the Twins have this bizarre philosophy about getting your utility hitter 300+ AB's a year. And when the third game after the all star break, Danny is playing CF over Buxton...we have another man made problem.

Two words:

Molly Likes Him

Three words:

Molly likes him

Three types of people - those who can count, and those who can't.

And for the most part they do. But it's an ego thing. Everyone wants to take something small and turn it into something bigger, just to prove they can. Even in my non-glamorous office job it happens.

Sure, the ultimate goal is to win, and while DanSan is pretty dreadful and there are people more deserving of the roster spot, it's not as if he's blocking anyone that's going to be a significant part of the future. So, if you can win ballgames and get some sort of production from your pet, it's a double win.

I could be totally off-base on this assessment, too. Who knows?

Starting even 1 game in place of Buxton is blocking someone who will be part of the future, and he seems to start at least 1 out of every 3 games

Molly, really? 11 for 19?

Nunez is 22 for 27.

Buxton is 7 for 7.

Fail to see what makes him best there.
