Zach Jones returned to the Twins

Was a rule 5 pick by the Brewers from the twins but has been hurt all year. Twins will get him back. What type of player is he? Can we expect him to help our bullpen in the 2nd half? I imagine there's no high expectations since he was left off the 40

Jones is going to AA. I would guess he won't sniff the majors until next season at the earliest.

At least he's going not be the next Gilmartin. Let's hope Jones can get healthy and help the bullpen in the future.

He throws 100 mph and was my prospect last year, so he is definitely one to root for.

Zach Jones is not a proper name for a pitcher. Zach's are supposed to be middle infielders.

And here we were worried about choosing Pat Dean for the 40-man over Jones.

Terry Ryan, in his infinite wisdom, knew what he was doing all along. Now we get the guy that might be able to eventually recover and be a usable bullpen piece AND the oft-desired lefty that makes Albers look like an ace.

Well played, Mr. Ryan. Well played.

I wonder if his return will bring as much discussion as we got when people thought we lost him.

Hopefully he turns out better than Gilmartin.  He's only pitched five fewer innings in the majors this year than Gilmartin has so far.

Gilmartin seems like he deserves more of a shot than the Mets have given him this year, but it's possible they know more about him than I do from checking his Baseball Reference page.

Can a guy get picked in the Rule 5 twice? I would think yes.

/ in which case does it become Rule 10? :)

Well, other teams could've grabbed him and didn't for this year. Unless he totally blows people away for the remainder, teams will wait to see if the Twins make a move to put him on the 40-man, although they still don't have to...unless he is Rochester bound. You still have to keep him on a major league roster all year. At some point, the Twins can add him to the 40-man and still have a few years to up and down him if they wish. A nice return. Now it is up to Mr. Jones to pull himself ahead of the Bards, Reeds, Burds and others.

Not a chance. That was 13 pages of pure anger.

Similar to Arcia, I hope he doesn't clear waivers or the 13 pages on anger will look pretty silly.

Thats why you read internet blogs with a grain of salt - or better yet a tablespoon of salt.

I hope he does.  We deal with silly all the time, but I'm afraid we will get another 13 pages of anger if he's claimed (especially if it's the Red Sox.)

He's more low to mid 90s. In his rehab, he really struggled. Keep the expectations down until he's healthy. I'd say for sure no, he won't be up this year.

Thanks for the info.   I read darn near all the posts when the Twins let Jones go:  made him sound like a 100mph pitcher.

Slow and go with Zach.   Get the arm loose again and see what happens.   At best:  2 years away?

Edit:  just noticed, Twins made $25k on the deal!   Allotment for next years baseball supply?

We've had one as president (Zachary Taylor) and there's at least one in the HoF (Wheat, although he spelled it Zack), so why set limitations?  I know those are old examples, but the name did make a comeback and was in the top 20 for most popular baby names every year from 1992-2003.  I'm sure we will see more of them, as pitchers, middle infielders, slugging first basemen (which is what I always thought it sounded like), and eventually as ushers and hot dog vendors.

Also one was the "King of Bayside HS" and eventually married the head cheerleader.  He even had a band!

I think I'm also in trouble if Chief happens to read this thread.

Interestingly Zach made 3 "rehab" appearances in the FSL, which is customary, and than two in the PCL which strikes me as not customary.

The Brewers were also sniffing .500 at the time of the promotion to AAA at 30-33 and were embarking on a 9 game West Coast road trip, which the PCL is much closer to. I wonder if the Brewers did have every intention of calling him up, but just couldn't pull the trigger.

Also interestingly, Zach's first two "rehab" appearances were against none other than the Fort Myers Miracle, where he only gave up 1H and 1BB vs 4K in 3 IP. So they did their part in trying to get Zach to the majors.

Looking at their Baseball Reference page, it looks like the Mets are trying Gilmartin out as a starter at AAA now that he has options. He has a 4.48 ERA with good peripherals so far. It looks like they're trying to figure out if he'll be a reliever or starter.

Does Mr. Greinke get a pass because he spells it Zack?

He gets a pass because of the last name: "Greinke."
