Ervin Santana was the fifth different opening day starter in the last five years for the Twins.  Carl Pavano was the last to start opening day in consecutive years, 2011 and 2012.  Prior to that, you have to go back to Johan Santana in 06 and 07.

Since 2006, only one opening day starter for the Twins has been drafted and developed by the team:  Scott Baker in 2010.  Before that, Radke in 2005.

Twins franchise record for strike outs is 1430. Everyone strikes out more often in this era. I wondered how the Twins compare relative to league.

2013 set the record for most strike outs as well as strike out rate relative to AL. The Twins strike out rate of 23% was 16.4% above league average rate. The top (or is it bottom) 5 Twin teams.

2013 +16.4%
1982 +15.6%
1973 +13.8%
1997 +  7.8%
2014 +  7.7%

The Senators stand out for strike outs just prior to coming to Minnesota and posted rates relative to league above the +16.4% in 1959 and 1960.

From 2004 to 2012 the Twins batters struck out less than league average.

After 1 game in 2016 they are 13.2% above league average.

Hopefully Berrios bucks that trend in 2017 and beyond!

The Twins are on pace for 1,620 strike outs as a team.  The record is 1,535 set by the Astros in 2013

Or, a Twins optimist might say:

Twins pitchers are on pace for 1,620 strike outs as a team.  The record is 1,450 set by the Indians in 2014.

(The era of "pitch to contact" is OVAH!)

In three games so far, the Twins have sent only 3 or 4 hitters to the plate in 20 of 27 innings.

They have sent 6 hitters to the plate only once in an inning.

Twins are on pace for...trying to do the math...can't quite figure out....very complicated...oh yes....0 wins this year.

However, if they go 12-6 over the next stretch, they could finish April at .500.

Definitely no die hard fan.  6 games into season?  At least give them 15 games before you give up all hope :)

To me this isn't about the six games, or the six losses. Those streaks happen to every team. It's about the appearance that all the questionable issues raised prior to the season, could be true. SP still low on SO, and innings pitched. BP is suspect. Perkins is struggling. Record or not, the SO numbers are gonna be insane. Nothing Sano in RF or Park with the bat have done so far, are cause for optimism. Neither issue is a lost cause, but success will be awhile arriving, if it does. Slumps are slumps, but some of these troubling issues are not going to go away. That's to me a bigger problem than the 6 losses. And if they continue, how the FO reacts will determine this teams future. I still maintain that last May, was and will remain a curse to the development of this team.

There are currently 16 NL pitchers hitting better than all but 3 Twins hitters.......

Oh my.

The Twins are now on pace for 1944 strikeouts as a team.

Miguel Sano is dead last in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS for Twins regulars through 7 games.  Those numbers are .136, .136, .406.

The 2015 Twins "led" the American League in negative strikeout differential, with their batters striking out 218 more times than their pitchers struck out opposing batters.

The 2016 Twins are on a pace to shatter that differential.    If they were somehow able to continue their current (and, one would hope, unsustainable) rate of K-raziness, they would finish with 532 more batter strikeouts than pitcher strikeouts.

Twins hitters rank 1-2-3 in terms of K% among AL hitters with over 20 plate appearances . Rosario also ranks 11th. That's almost half our lineup. Ouch.

I've got one. Currently leading the league in WHIP: Nolasco, Ricky. Just ahead of Clayton Kershaw, 0.43 to 0.47.

Now, that right there is some fun with numbers, ladies and gentlemen.

Ricky Nolasco = Staff Ace.
