Fun with numbers: 2016 edition

Just saw on Tim Kurkjian's "Quirkjians" that Eddie Rosario has the highest active streak of plate appearances without getting hit by a pitch among position players, at 498.

I think I just solved Eddie's OBP problem.

Today is the 90th anniverary of the Washington Senators' Walter Johnson opening day 1-0, 15 inning complete game victory over the Athletics.  Johnson gave up 6 hits and 3 walks, with a season high 9 K's.

Johnson was 38 years old that season.

Did you get him to autograph a ball for you?

I continue to watch this season unfold in disbelief.

Twins OBP with the bases empty: .343... 7th best in all of baseball.

Twins BA with RISP: .082... 30th in all of baseball because how can a team even do that over eight games?

(the next lowest is KC at .150, close to double the Twins)

2015 Joe Mauer, 158 games: 0.3 fWAR

2016 Joe Mauer, 6 games: 0.4 fWAR

Yeah, the Twins PR machine need to pump out a few "Mauer's race towards .400" commercials.  He is at .393.

Here is a fun number.  If you had placed a $1 bet prior to every Twins at bat that the hitter would strike out, through 8 games you would be down only $86.

Great article: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-traps-that-the-twins-need-to-avoid/

Basically the Twins were very lucky last year, and the pendulum of fate has swing mightily.

It's not to say this club is THIS bad, but maybe it wasn't as good as their record last year. Which would mean this rebuilding process has a longer way to go than many expected based on last year's record.

Rickey Nolasco has a .98 WHIP so far and a 2.66 ERA.  Who would have predicted that after 3 games?

I was just gonna come on here and point out some Nolasco stuff.  Good call.

The Cubs run differential is higher than the Twins runs scored, so, to make up for that, the Twins pitchers would have had to have given up negative three runs (and the Cubs have played 1 less game).......

Eddie Rosario is second in the AL in swing and miss percentage at 20.1%. This isn't a surprise at all, but I just wanted to look it up because it seems like every AB for Rosario has at least one swing and miss in it.

I'm confused by this.  How have the twins only had 320 lead-off plate appearances since the beginning of last season?  There's been about 190 games since the beginning of last season.  If you're only counting the lead-off of the game then there would be 190-ish plate appearances.  If you're counting the lead-off for each inning then you're pushing 2000 plate appearances (190 games x 9 innings per game).   I cannot figure out the 320.

It's actually 860 PA with a line of  .242 /.303/.424.

Last in BA, 26th in OBP, 12th in SLG% (along with 18th in OPS and 20th in wRC+)

I was talking about the current Twins leadoff hitter, Danny Santana, apologize for not being more clear.

But yeah, I guess those overall leadoff numbers are pretty awful as well
