Article: Twins With Winning Bid On Korean Slugger

The Twins aren't going to pay the posting fee and another 30-40 million to have a guy be a bench bat.

It's a long-term deal. I said, "the start of the season (and/or the first season)". Two different things.

The 40-man conundrum is all the more reason to actively seek out deals where the Twins sell two or three (or more) players for one or two guys.

Of which 40-man conundrum do you speak?  The Twins have 6 vacant spots on the 40-man roster now and can easily create 6 more.

For example, Sean Gilmartin?

Again, it doesn't much matter.  If they sign Park and don't protect the next Gilmartin, there are still 39 other guys they are preferring to protect over Gilmartin too.  A quick glance suggests names like Achter, Darnell, O'Rourke, Tonkin, Herrmann, Pinto, and Nunez probably need to go before we're down to Park being a questionable 40-man addition for Rule 5 purposes.

(And that's not even counting Santana, Arcia, Vargas, Graham, Fien, and Pressly, who still have some potential but hardly have locks on future 40 man usefulness.)

Interesting. Brewers need a 3b after Ramirez retired, could Plouffe be part of package for Lucroy?

Covered in depth in recent various Plouffe and catching threads.  Short answer: a Brewers team dealing Lucroy is entering serious rebuild mode, and having Plouffe the next two seasons is probably pretty meaningless for such a team.

They file a 40-man roster on Nov. 20, so unless the KBA is considered a "minor league" in the rules below, he would not be eligible anyway.:

"The Rule V Draft is held annually during baseball's Winter Meetings. Teams must file a 40-man roster with the league office by November 20th. Any player who fits all of the criteria below is eligible for the Rule V Draft:
Player is not on the 40 man roster
Player has been in the minor leagues for at least 4 years if he was signed after age 19 (was 3 years before the 2006 CBA).
Player has been in the minor leagues for at least 5 years if he was signed before age 19 (was 4 years before the 2006 CBA)"

I'm aware that Park wouldn't be eligible for the rule V draft.  I was talking about a situation where Park takes a spot on the 40-man roster, leaving another rule V eligible prospect exposed in the draft.

I guess I didn't realize that a team has to file the 40-man that early.  Either way, I don't believe that the Twins will come to a deal before Nov 20th.  So, it's kind of a moot point.

For example, Sean Gilmartin?

He had a nice year, but he never showed much in the minors for the Twins etc in 4+ years, besides the Twins easily could have kep him on the 40 man roster and not exposed him, instead they decided not too. Either way, not worth getting too worked up on losing him...yet.

If the Yankees, or Dodgers, or Red Sox, etc. had signed him we would be jealous, but the Twins signed him. That's just too weird. There MUST be something wrong with the guy.

This is my gut talking. I myself have no opinion until I see him bat around some balls. Of course he's not signed yet either.

the way Fien finished and Pressly was a great pitcher when healthy they are locks. Tonkin and Nunez most likely locks as well. and need one of those 2 catchers to back up suzuki

My point is to keep as many prospects as possible.

You are still going to lose some that you later wish you had protected and still going to keep some that you later find that you didn't need to protect.

But, the more you can protect, the better the odds.

And since November 20 is when the 40-man rosters are submitted, Park's signing will be too late to be an issue.

In retrospect (as in, still only a few hours in......) this shows why MLB has a cap on draftee signings, because he's basically a AAA or AAAA player right now, and this is what it would cost to sign a AAA level prospect.....except for the age thing.....not thrilled with the age.

As a flyer, I have no issue with this. they've already proven adept at sending one International player home, let's hope they don't have to make it a pattern.

Sorry for noobglish

Hi, I'm Korean MLB's and PARK's fan

This is first time write this forums

I have a few knowledge about Minnesota

but I'm really like your sportsman : mauer, hunter, dozier

and Kevin Garnett

and I'm also like Coen brothers's move Fargo

just one thing i have to say is

Park will never let you down.

Park's most valuable tool is not he's power

but He's make-up

As you know Park had been league destroyer in last 3 years (I know MLB>NPB>KBO. and It's true)

but he was not satisfied with that

He had always tried to find he's weakness and upgrade his batting mechanic.

He is a really baseball rat

Maybe he's not good unlike KBO in MLB

but he will give all his effort to solve the problem and find a way

Like he did it in Korea

please give him cheers

I'm about to love Minnesota

Welcome aboard!  Always cool to have international fans around and thanks for the insider scouting report.  If Park translates as well as Kang did for the Pirates I am going to be a big fan of his, it looks like he really crushes the ball when he gets a hold of it.

So.....do we have an idea what kind of deal he will be offered?  Is Kang's deal with Pittsburgh last year a baseline?  Or does his success mean more?

Posted

Wow! Interesting to say the least!

Am I thrilled? Meh...kind of excited, but not thrilled. Too many variables to say I'm thrilled. Could the Twins use another power bat? Absolutely. Just wish it was LH, but power is power. I'd be thrilled if I could know ahead of time what to really expect from him. Now, we all know he's not going to hit or produce like he did in Korea. However, it's probably not unreasonable to expect him to him in the .270's, right? Even cutting his power in half he'd be a 25-26 HR hitter, and that is also good, yes? Now...200 SO's wouldn't be fun, but mixe in at least a few walks with the Avg and power and I'd be pretty happy.

It's not a move the usually conservative Twins make. And it's nice to see them being aggessive, as well as not being gun shy after what happened with Nishioka. And I agree it would seem Plouffe is probably gone now. Step 2 could be even more important than step 1 was.

Does anyone know how to pronounce his full name? I'd like to be able to say it correctly.

@SwainZag - MLB Trade Rumors was saying 5 years, $40M.

You can say " bak (last name) - byeong - ho "

Improve the team. We should just want them to improve. This helps - adds a power bat, gives you greater flexibility to trade from a position of strength for a need. As I (and many others) say: DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY. They may have their highest payroll in history this year. Jim Pohlad didn't suddenly get philanthropic. The Twins, and every other team, are making more money than ever before. They should be aggressive, be spending.....and this does just that.

Kudos the the Twins. You get taken seriously when you do everything you can to put a championship-caliber team on the field. This is the move of a team trying to do the right thing.

Thank you ... I have several Korean colleagues at work ... was going to ask them tomorrow, now I don't have to! My colleagues will be playing a concert in Seoul in January; sorry I won't be making the trip.

So what the difference between Bak and ABW?  Lots more money?  A massive brand identity in ROK?  They must be planning on selling jerseys by the boxcar to justify this investment.  Hey, maybe a 2 for 1--tossing in a free Nishioka jersey when buying Bak's at full price?

Just to double check here... so when you say his name it's pronounced: "Byeong - ho bak"? So his last name "Park" is actually pronounced "Bak"?

If Sano is a starting outfielder - you have to believe that there will be a defensive focused 4th outfielder. We might be looking at a Shane Robinson return - if he is willing to sign to a minor league deal.

Conversely, this does not bode well for Arcia.  Have to believe that his days in Minnesota are numbered.

If this team intends to compete for a playoff spot, It does make sense for the Twins to retain their most consistently productive players.  Plouffe is a solid major league third baseman.  On the flip side, Arcia and Vargas still have not proven they can hit consistently at the major league level.

The question is whether the Twins will non-tender or trade Arcia - or give him one more shot in spring training with an expectation that he would be dealt if he can't make the club.
