Duffey Called Up; Milone to the DL

I'm alright with Duffey getting a shot in the rotation. He deserves it and maybe he can latch on as a back-end starter... or maybe a reliever? (I've seen people suggest it, but I have no idea. Does he have a good split vs lefties?)

Pelfrey must be on the hot seat. If Duffey or Pelfrey go downhill quickly, I'd hope they'll move May back into the rotation. May is not the best pitcher in the rotation, but he's better than Milone & Pelfrey, and most likely better than Duffey.

I remember some of the reasons people gave when they defended the decision to put May in the bullpen.

-He won't be there long.

-He's only going down so they can showcase other pitchers for the trade deadline and will be back right after that.

-He'll be back in the rotation as soon as one of the others gets hurt.

We can knock these excuses off the possibly valid list.

I understand the frustrations with May, I want him back in the rotation too... But at least now there appears to be a plan in place (after a month of sitting in no mans land) to use him as a 7-8th inning guy. Milone going down should only open up a window in the rotation for 2 starts, so I hope Duffey can show something in this small sample size.

Maybe he does deserve it, but probably doesn't deserve it more than the guy who got booted to the pen earlier this season, Trevor may.

Maybe... It's possible that Duffey is looking good and they want to get a look at him... Just in case he can help.

Maybe it isn't about May at all

How dare you!

It's been a month now. May is in the pen till they fall out of the race or spring training. Get used to it.

When there is an open rotation slot, and May doesn't get it, then it is about May. It's ludicrous to suggest that Duffey, completely unproven, is more worthy than a guy with demonstrated MLB success.

And I'm a big fan of Duffey. But May should not have been removed from the rotation and keeping him in the bullpen is grossly incompetent.

Also, since nobody has mentioned this... will Pressly pitch again this season? He was one of the better relievers and I'd like to see him get back on the field (he's eligible to return in September, right?)

I think many of us that were outraged at the time May was moved to the bullpen figured exactly the same thing, even after hearing/reading the plethora of excuses used to defend the move, many of which can be tossed aside.

Tyler DuffEy: 6'3", 220 pounds.

ERA last ten AAA games, 2.45.

132 innings pitched this season, overall ERA of 3.24.

24 years old. Fifth round pick in 2012 from Rice University.

"The extra E is for extra pee." Anybody remember that one?

Is that like the silent 'p' in "swimming"?

The Twins are "ignorant", "ludicrous", "grossly incompetent" and leading the Wild Card Race by one game.

I'm trying to make sense of this. Move May to the rotation. Bring back up a hitter. Interesting that Duffey jumps Berrios and Rogers, who is a lefty. Give him some major league looksee. You might jsut want to keep him here in the bullpen.

Didn't seem like he jumped either of them.

@RhettBollinger
Molitor said the Twins also considered Jose Berrios and Taylor Rogers, but that Tyler Duffey was the unanimous decision. Most ready now.

Well, they can't do all three.  They can't move May to the rotation, bring back up a hitter, AND give Rogers a looksee.  That'd result in a 26 man roster.

What if they cut Boyer like they should have done weeks ago? :)

This suggests when they moved May to the pen, they had no intention of putting him back this season, at least not while we were in contention, since they considered 3 pitchers to replace Milone and none of them were May, apparently.

Joe Mauer's been hitting a ton of lag-head foul balls down the third base line. Maybe it's time Joe looked for a bat with a lighter head.

But then he would lose all that power he gets from the heavier head.

I don't know if it's about May or not, but the reality at this point is that May has been in the pen for more than a month now and like or not, he's not stretched out for a 2 start spot start.  If you put him back in the rotation, he's likely going 3-5 innings at best for his first start, which is going to leave that game in the hands of our very capable pen.

I think if this is a longer term thing, Duffey comes up and May goes down to get stretched out and then May comes back up and Duffey (if he does well) moves to the pen.  I don't think this is about the Twins undervaluing May or May being in someone's dog house.  I think this is about doing what is best for the Twins in the short term.

Just get the best 12 guys (11 in playoffs, but that just means no Santana) up and let it fly. Duffey is one of them. Berrios and Rogers are two more.

So far the mlb.com network has dropped the game signal at least ten times. Not impressed. Each time I had to reload the app on my TV.

I don't have a lot of hope for Duffeys major league debut. Should have went with May against Toronto. I could see a demoralizing 2 IPH 5 ER 3 HR type line

To paraphrase Harrison Ford:

How dare YOU, Sirs!

Even if it isn't about May, it should be.  May is already "looking good" and already "gotten a look" and already proven that "he can help."

Would be pretty disappointing after how well he has kept the ball in the park in AAA.
