Best guesses on why Duensing has a MLB job?

He was incredibly lucky to have the ERA he did last year, and I think the Twins front office is simply conservative enough to give him a deal. At $2.7 million he's a pretty cheap for a lefty specialist, which is basically what he is. The Twins don't have a lot of vets in the bullpen, either. He also does a lot of community service in Minnesota. I would have non-tendered him.

Inertia?

He's left handed, and everyone needs LH relief help?

He's probably not quite this bad?

Dunno, I'm just spit-balling here.

Should

Have traded him for Kershaw, Loney, Billingey and Kemp when we had the chance!!!

The serious answer is: he has been a pretty solid player for the twins org for several years now so he gets a bit of a long leash.

Unfortunately that leash needs to be let go now, it sucks but hopefully he can catch on somewhere else (or go to the minors and get it together a bit?)

Left handed.....breathing.....some velocity and actual ML success.

Seriously.

Additionally, he's a legit good guy and I think the Twins honestly saw a rebound year coming.

My guesses would be.....he's a 7 year vet, they are paying him a decent salary, he was injured and has pitched in very situational times lately to the tune of 11 innings all year.

My guess is Stauffer is off this roster before Duensing is.

I'll second this. Duensing is exactly the type of guy that will keep getting chances in this league for many years to come. This might be his peak salary though.

Can anyone offer a rational reason for him being on any MLB roster?

I'm a little disappointed we didn't get a mind boggled in here.

If your stats are this bad as a situational guy, wouldn't it be better to just use a righty? He is a good guy, but that's no reason to keep him on the roster. I am disappointed in the FO for him and Stauffer being on the roster.

I think he has a sore arm and needs some AAA rehab to get his pitching back in order.

Stauffer does too.

They both need some innings.

You know that pitch is illegal now, right?

But, seriously, you can't have 13 pitchers on your roster without some bodies.  Duensing fills that requirement.  And he's a lefty.  Other than that... I have nothing.

My theory:

Molitor was the other guy in the pictures of Gardy that Punto had. Punto gave said pictures to Duensing.

The reason he was probably resigned was he was a veteran left handed pitcher who would be a free agent at the end of the season. If the Twins had fallen out of contention by the trading deadline and he was pitching well, he would have been an ideal trade candidate for a playoff team looking for some veteran left handed help. He is/was a trade asset.

Now granted, he hasn't pitched well this year, and the Twins are playing better than expected, but he may still have some trade value if he can turn around his season. I think what may be needed is a 'planned' DL stint for some time off and a rehab stint to get back on track.

What may eventually happen is when Santana returns, Milone is moved to the bullpen to take Duensings' place if he hasn't shown some improvement.

Duensing......sigh.

He came on with 2 on and 1 out, induced a ground ball, had an intentional walk and got a fly ball that should have ended the inning.  Thompson and Pressley set that up last night.
