****. Postponed? That works against the Twins big time, it's hard as all hell to sweep a double header. Stupid Cleveland, you are the worst city ever. Ichiro put it best:

“To tell the truth, I’m not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to,” Ichiro said through an interpreter. “If I ever saw myself saying I’m excited going to Cleveland, I’d punch myself in the face, because I’m lying.”

Well if the Angels can do it to the Twins, the Twins can do it to the Indians.

Win Twins!! x2!!

I don't think it is a very smart quiz, it said, "Supreme Nerd. Apply for a professorship at MIT now!!!." See what I mean?

It's all part of the process. You are critiquing a Nerd Test. This confirms your Supreme-ness. It is now your world, we just live in it.

It's no more difficult to sweep a doubleheader than it is to win two games in two days. I agree that if the Angels did it we can do it. Remain optimistic! I think we have a better chance of sweeping this one than Cleveland does.

OK, so what's the game plan with the bullpen tonight?  The team clearly only trusts Jepsen, Boyer (I can't believe I just typed that), May and for some reason Perkins and Fien.

Most likely these guys won't be available for both games.  If it's a close game, should Molitor go to his bullpen which seems to be his initial instinct, or should Gibson go past the point of comfort?

More importantly, if Gibson gets rocked and the game is out of hand, do you leave him in to take all the beating and save the pen for a hopefully more competitive game 2? If it's 6-0 in the 4th, I think the team needs to cut it's losses and save the arms for game 2.  I'd hate to give away a game at this point in the year, but the season might be over if they give up two games simply trying to cling to a slim hope of salvaging the first one.

May is listed as game-time decision with his back problems. Don't know if Duensing is recovered from the flu yet.

Nolasco is available and Tonkin has looked improved. Cotts should be able to LOOGY in both games. When the choices are limited, you use what you have.

I should point out that, contrary to any previous statements made in this thread's opening post, it is Carlos Carrasco who will be facing Gibson; Cody Anderson will be taken on by Mike Pelfrey 30 minutes after the final out (or winning run) of this afternoon's game.

Something I'd rather not think about:

A good nerd would run the numbers on this.  My guess:

50% of the time DH end in a split

50% of the time DH end in a sweep, with home team sweeping slightly more often.

OK, I googled it.  A Chris Jaffe article "History of the Double Header" in three parts was of no help, but apparently the number of DHs per season is on the decline.

A different article looked at results of DHs since 2005...and across 200+, sweeps occurred about 51%, and the home team swept about 58% of those.

So if my math is correct, If the Twins sweep today/tonight and the Astros and Angels both lose the Twins will be tied for 2nd Wild Card Spot with the Angels and a half game up on the 'Stros.

Actually days don't stay the same length. They are (very) gradually getting longer as the Earth's rotation slows down due to tidal friction. Gravitational coupling with the Moon, dontcha know? So in return the moon is moving further away. Angular momentum is once again conserved.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_acceleration

Reminds me of a chat I had yesterday with my physical therapist. She was wondering if NASA's announcement meant there was life on Mars, and all I could say is at least they have a little better idea of where to look. Why spend all that money, she wondered, which got the conversation into an existential direction about the significance of searching for life on other planets and stuff. We started getting into stellar evolution and shifting Goldilocks zones, but ran out of time.

I do wonder tho, if Mars were the same size as Earth, would it still have an atmosphere and life? A molten core would really come in handy out there on the edge of the habitable zone, for heat as well as for that magnetosphere.

Speaking of survivability, the Twins need a rock-solid performance from the core of their starting rotation, Kyle Gibson, who must hurl up to a hundred small satellites into very brief, low-Earth orbits with sufficient directional and rotational velocities to fool a good number of Indians. Let us hope that Gibson's satellites do not collide too hard with wooden sticks traveling in the opposite direction.

Twins aren't "toast" if they lose one game. However it makes their margin for error razor thin.

Sweep would be very awesome.

If Gibson can go 7-8 IP and get us a win, I will never say anything bad about him ever again.

Does my IQ of 146 qualify as a nerd? I like to identify as one...

I took my IQ test pass/fail. Won't say how I done, but mamma thought I was a nice boy.

Pseudo-Yogiism of the day:

I don't know what to do with my hair. Should I grow it shorter or cut it longer?

Yes.

Though it really depends on whether you're wide asleep or falling awake.

Toast.  A loss for either team and they are toast.  A split and both are toast.

Indians already are toast; not mathematically eliminated (I think) but they have to win every game and then hope for bizarre losing streaks by 3 teams ahead of them, some of whom play each other. Rub some jelly on their belly and tell them nice season and go again in 2016.

The Twins have a difficult path to post-season but nothing bizarre - Just Win Baby!

Speaking of IQ, consider the case of William Sidis, often purported to have the highest one ever measured.

In that picture I think he looks just like Joe Mauer.

Humbling. I didn't find my first mistake in Einstein's Theory of Relativity until my late teens. To do it at nine? Inconceivable!

"Pitch to contact" is easy to understand: If you don't throw the ball over the plate, you can't expect their guys to hit it. Slows down the whole game.
