The corresponding callup is Ronny Henriquez. Paddack was supposed to start Thursday's getaway game in Arizona. Will a bullpen game ensue, or the rotation be moved forward a day? Perhaps another callup such as Randy Dobnak is imminent, or is this a precursor to a FA starter signing?

Paddack to IL with a pretty bad case of "suckitis." I have it on authority here's the conversation.

Falvey: "Look, Chris, you've been infected with a pretty bad case of suckitis. We wanted to limit your innings a little anyway this year so you're either going to be moved to the 15 day IL or you're going to be moved to the bullpen for the rest of the year. Now, MLB's watching us like hawks with the Phantom IL thing so I need to hear it from you that the reason for your suckitis is arm fatigue. Or you can tell me you really like being a middle reliever."

Paddack: "You know, now that you mention it, my arm has felt a little tired lately. I've been throwing my hardest to try to compensate so my velo isn't down. I probably need a skip a start or two."

Falvey: "Great! That's exactly what I thought was happening. I'm so glad we were on the same page."

Might wanna check the spelling on the first "suckitis". Just sayin.

After 89 pitches and little duress, Ober should be able to go on Thursday, but I won't be surprised if Henriquez is burned up today and tomorrow and then optioned for Boushley.

There is a spot open for Festa on the 40 man roster.

This could be a good time to shut down Paddack until the AS break, giving him 4 weeks of rest. It’s also a good time to give David Festa a 3-4 start audition and see if they really need to add starting pitching in July.

It was said somewhere that Festa would be operating on normal rest if he started Thursday. I'd hate to throw off a successful Ober game by adjusting his schedule, day off notwithstanding.

The other consideration is whether Kepler or Larnach will go to the IL and who might be recalled. Rocco has mentioned that transactions this week would be interesting. Guess he got that right. I'd love to see Lee up for either.. but am resigned that it will likely be Wallner (or even Julien-again)

I think it's a better idea to start Festa against the Snakes than the Mariners.

Ober would be on normal rest Thursday. Same for Lopez Friday.

I'd guess that's what they'll do, with Varland going Saturday in Seattle.

Will be interesting to see who they call up for the rotation. Varland get another go? Festa going to be added to the 40-man? Boushley get a start? Not just for the first missed Paddack start but for the following ones. Will be interesting to see who gets a shot.

Hmm.. I can picture this happening but Varland is running so rough right now.

Agreed, but he's been their 6th starter on paper, had a successful start last time up, and doesn't require a 40 man move.

I doubt it's Festa.

I would avoid slotting the new starter in on either side of Woods Richardson. That would give the greatest possibility of two consecutive short starts. I would slot them in between Ober and Lopez or Lopez and Ryan.

Varland is maybe a possibility since he only threw 2.1 innings on 6/23 while getting rocked in AAA. That'd leave him on 4 days rest for Paddack's previously scheduled 6/27 start.

Caleb Boushley is my guess. He's already on the 40 and he owns a 2.10 ERA over his last 5 starts in AAA. He last pitched on 6/22 which gives him 5 days rest.

Cannot imagine Wallner up before Lee……the 40-man spot is a key detail. Castro out to the grass & Lee getting reps at 2B works for me.

Festa would need a 40-man spot as well. Maybe Thielbar is a surprise DFA in a couple days??

Stewart to 60 day IL would get Festa a spot in short-term…..,somebody earlier said Stewart would be available again around August 12. Not a bad move.

However they backfill the roster, should be a good 20 days plus off for Paddack!!

I am not interested in guesses in who they will bring up. We will find out soon enough. I am interested in what others would do.

I think Festa has the most upside so I would give him the starts in hopes that he pitches well enough to stay in the rotation when Paddack is healthy. The risk of calling up Festa is that he isn’t ready and they devote a valuable 40 man roster spot to someone who isn’t able to help this year. Is it worth that very real risk?

Lopez 5.1 IP average
Ryan 6.0 IP average
Ober 5.1 IP average
Paddack 5.1 IP average
SWR 5.0 average

The difference between the starters, other than Ryan, is pretty insignificant.

Not sure why you think Lee has the inside track to the roster ahead of Wallner... or honestly even Julien.
Wallner is on the 40 man.
Wallner's bat has been more productive than Lee's during Lee's tenure at AAA
Wallner has a spot in the outfield.

Huh. I had no idea (but never thought about it either) that their numbers were so.. meager.

I would agree Wallner is 'more likely' (not the same as a better choice than Lee) because of familiarity and being on the 40 man.

They don't really need to fill Paddack's spot until Saturday.

I would take the risk because I agree with you. Festa has the highest upside. I’m not too concerned about the 40 man spot. They can move Stewart to the 60 day IL, or DFA Josh Winder.

87 K's in 59 Innings.

I'm going with Festa.

It's time to take a look at starter #7. Just to see what he can do before the trade deadline.

It's critical intel for making informed decisions.

Chest pressure, a sure symptom.

I think it was one of those completely innocent "Freudian slips".
