Never-say-quit Joey! Hey, I hope he comes back and homers in every game ... along with 4 strikeouts each game too.

I hope he gets 4 homers in every game ... along with 1 strike out. Just to be contrary.

John Castino.

"Johnny C" was the first Twins player I got to liking.  He shared rookie of the year honors.  His career was cut short by back injuries

What news of him?

Retired from being an invesment manager in 2015 and moved to Florida. Had an idea early last year that a walk should be on ball three instead of 4 as way to speed up the game.

Surprised Tigers DFA'd Urshela. Seemed like he was still a really effective defender with a good arm.

He never fully recovered yet from last years injury.

Youth movement. Might as well get the kids playing for the future now.

Baddoo turned 26 yesterday.  In my business, a youth movement would be hiring someone in their early 30s. My business of course has nothing to do with running fast, etc.

I remember when he got taken in the Rule V draft after being injured. I basically had two immediate reactions:

1. Why on earth would the Twins leave him unprotected?

2. Why would anyone take him at this point in his career?

Like most such picks, I imagine, in retrospect the correct response should have been "Well, good luck and best wishes."

I'm surprised too. I wasn't shocked to see Baddoo sent down again, but Urshela is still a good, steady player. Too bad he can't help us in our search for pitching!

Yeah, many of us on this board had high hopes for Baddoo back in the day when he was in our system, so when the Tigers "nabbed" him and then he started playing well that first season there was certainly a lot of angst. But in retrospect, it wasn't much of a loss. But yeah, good luck to him, and I hope he can bounce back with another team.

Your two questions contradict themselves.  You ask why Twins would leave unprotected, but at same time you wonder why someone would take him.  Your second question answers the first, because the Twins did not expect anyone to take him that year in rule 5, that is why you leave unprotected and protect others.  Turns out to have worked just fine for Twins.

Yes, that was exactly my point. I had both sides of the question in my mind at the same time. It's a good way of realizing that you have no idea what the best solution might be.

This is exactly what teams should do.

When a player has the combination of expiring contract and a 73 OPS+. It is exactly what teams should do with that player.

The Tigers sold at the deadline and are currently 9 games back of the last wild card spot.

Torkelson, Jung and Sweeney have been called up from the minors. Those who are not playing well with expiring contracts should be thrown overboard.

I wasn't happy that he didn't give the Twins a chance on a new contract (then again, maybe the Twins' head office had no interest) before becoming a free agent, but sorry to hear that he's injured again. Has to be very frustrating.

Josh Staumont released by the Cubs.

Man, that didn't take long. For a pitcher who didn't give up a single earned run for nearly 3 months, he has seen his world turn upside down in a hurry.
