Interesting. Who are they going to drop to get him a roster spot?

Probably someone will go on the Injured List. Beyond that, Megill and Moran have options, Cotton has been DFAed twice and who knows, maybe the Twins will have decided to pull the plug on Pagán by Sunday.

With the All-Star break being five days and then days off the following Monday and Thursday, they could send down Smeltzer after Friday’s start and play with an extra reliever through the end of the month.

14-Gray
15-Smeltzer (then down for Archer)
16-Bundy
17-Archer
23-Ryan
24-Gray
26-Bundy
27-Archer
29-Ryan
30-Gray
31-Smeltzer
1-Bundy
2-Archer
3-Ryan (or Winder in 6-man rotation), etc.

Jeffers to IL with a thumb injury, Caleb Hamilton has been added to the 40 man and called up. He’s been hitting well at AAA and seems to have passed up Godoy.

Caleb Hamilton added to the roster. Jeffers to the 10-day IL.

Probably this move was made because Jeffers will only miss a few games, the rest of the WSox series plus the two-game Tiger series.

How did they open a spot on the 40 man? It doesn’t appear that they dropped Godoy and as stated, they added Hamilton to the 40 man. I didn’t see a corresponding move to clear a spot.

mlbtraderumors.com reported that Jeffers has a fracture in his thumb and will be out 6 to 8 weeks. Adding a catcher may now be a trade deadline priority.

Unlikely they'll send him down for that long. They won't go with a 4 man rotation even with the off days.

And I was proven wrong as he was sent down today to make room for Archer.. Wonder who'll be the 5th starter after the break?

Smeltzer and Winder can both get two starts before a decision has to be made about who to jettison from the bullpen.

Nice to have that extra arm in the pen for short starts, right?

When Ober returns, that creates a whole 'nother problem.

Question: Would you put Jeffers on the 60-day now (or when you have to make the Sano decision)?

They have a couple of easy cuts from the 40-man (Strotman & Contreras) so making room for Sanó shouldn’t be much of a problem, if they choose to do so. A couple homers at St. Paul doesn’t tell me much about his readiness (IMHO).

Rocco was just on the radio pregame and said they'd be going with 4 starters until "early August."

He wouldn't commit to which 4 though.

I'd assume Gray, Ryan, Bundy and Archer.

Looking at the Twins web site, it appears that Danny Coloumbe has been shifted to the 60 day to open a slot for Sano, Sano has been activated and Celestino optioned.

Not listed in transactions, but active roster shows Sano, but no Celestino. Transactions shows the Coloumbe shift.

and we have tonight's lineup - Sano is starting at 1B and batting 9th... taking away ABs from all-star Luis Arraez who will be on the bench.  Sano better produce immediately.

Arraez never starts vs left handed pitching.  This is a non-story

While in general I agree with this move, as I am a big believer in platoon splits, let's not exaggerate.

Arraez has 9 starts vs LH starters this season.

And I think it's unreasonable to call it a "non story."

It's Luis Arraez, and Miguel Sano. It's going to be part of the story.

It's only a story because it's Sano.  Arraez has routinely sat against left handed starters and has gotten the occasional start, which mainly came because of the injury to Polanco where Luis was at 2nd base.  The narrative for people to freak out because Sano is starting over Arraez vs a left handed starter isn't warranted.

Again...let's not exaggerate. Twins have faced 25 LH starters this season, Arraez started 9 of those. Better than 1 in 3. That's not "occasional."

This is going to be part of the story. Rather than inventing reasons to stamp out any discussion, let's at least deal with reality.

There's going to be questions. "Arraez never starts against LHers" isn't true and isn't going to end the discussion.

FO made biggest mistakes for trading Pressley to Houston and Taylor to SF.   Twins bullpen are real bad.  I think Twins will trade Carlos Correa for at least two elite pitchers (starting pitcher and reliever).  Kenta Maeda might not be playing in September.
