Cap'n Piranha Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Hmmm. With Garlick AND Kepler down, I'm quite surprised AK is not one of the call-ups. AK in the outfield seems preferable to Polanco and Astudillo up the middle. By a lot.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 What about Garlick? I’m confused. I thought there were two players who tested positive and one of them was Garlick.

Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I am seeing that Thorpe will be the 27th man in the doubleheader, but wasn't he already on the 26 man roster? I saw no news of him being optioned.
jun Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Cave and Dobnak are still around, why not call up Law and Kirilloff/Broxton and demote them?
jun Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Rooker and Polanco really need to get it together, I’ll be hopeful.Arraez needs to bat leadoff no matter what.
jun Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I mentioned this in a post on another thread, but why in the world would AK not be on the taxi squad?Kirilloff, Broxton and Law should be on the taxi squad. They really need to get Broxton and Law on the 40 man roster.
h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 If Astudillo playing second is considered depth, we are in deep poop. And Baldelli still insists on batting a struggling Garver leadoff. I like him there when he is hot..... but now?At least we have Donaldson, Buxton, and Cruz in the lineup.....

But I agree, why Astudillo and not AK?

twinbythebay Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I mentioned this in a post on another thread, but why in the world would AK not be on the taxi squad?I'm guessing they'd rather have him in St. Paul getting consistent work in for the sake of development. I don't think development is the top priority for the guys on the taxi squad. But also, I kind of doubt the Twins were ever going to call him up before this weekend due to the service time thing...
big dog Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Arraez in left, Rooker in right, and Astudillo at second. Run, Byron, Run!!!

He has to be able to develop while on the taxi squad. He has access to the major league hitting coach, and all the tools our other hitters have. He can take BP before every single game. He can talk to Donaldson/Cruz about hitting. He can work on his defense with major league coaching. The only thing he can't do is face live pitching, but that's what, maybe 4-5 PA's a day he's losing out on? I think the rest of the advantages of being with the big club, along with the ability to use him for DH's makes up for the "plate appearances" he loses out on.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Have we passed the service time threshold? I thought it was around the 17th.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Thorpe was optioned after his start in Anaheim. Smeltzer was recalled in his place.Got it. Neither Fangraphs nor CBS had this update, so I was confused. I'm surprised Smeltzer is still on the 40 man, but I guess at this point he's just a body.

jun Verified Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Thorpe was optioned after his start in Anaheim. Smeltzer was recalled in his place.A fresh but ineffective arm.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 Have we passed the service time threshold? I thought it was around the 17th.Not quite. Because Kirilloff is already on the 40-man roster and on optional assignment to the minors, the “Kris Bryant” date doesn’t quite work for him — we need to keep Kirilloff in the minors for 21+ days to secure the extra year of control. We should hit that threshold Thursday this week.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I think it is because they are on the west coast and Kiriloff is not on the taxi squad. It's because of service time, and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it's 2 LHers going for Oakland in the DHer. They had 3 days to get Kirilloff to the west coast if they wanted to, he could have went by horse and buggy.
