Even with different writers, the voice stayed pretty constant with Cistulli at the helm. Now Rowley is at the helm, and it makes sense that things would have a different tone, even if all the writers were the same.

An editor can only do so much. I hardly recognize the site now. Still good, just different. Now with Jeff leaving, all the voices I really like are gone. Plus, he lives in Portland, and has given me lots of advice.....

I guess I've noticed holdovers like Jeff have their voice change some in their tone and tenor of their articles under Meg. It's been heavily noted in their prospect stuff, where some prospect writing fans have gotten into long Twitter rants about it and even gone so far as to attack Meg herself.

As someone about to leave two places that I've been editing and/or writing for a while, I would hate to see vitriol at whoever follows me simply because they're speaking differently than I would.

Just checking out the AL Central on Baseball Reference today, and there are 2 items that interested me:

1. From the Department of Selective Statistical Comparisons:

Although there are some rumblings the Twins might give Cleveland a run for the money this season, In Kluber(5.9), Carrasco(3.9), Bauer(5.8), and Clevinger(5.2), they have 4 starters who met or far exceeded the Twins best in Berrios(3.9) in WAR.

2. From the Department of Contract Hell

Detroit still has Cabrera on the hook for 5 more seasons at 30-32 million per year. He has -WAR over the last 2 seasons, and will be 36 in April. There are also 2 vesting options that could take him to age 42, but he would need to finish top 10 in MVP voting for them to vest. He'll have to battle his tail off to justify those salaries.

Yup. This is reflected in Fangraphs 2019 projections too -- they have Cleveland at 92 wins, and the Twins at 83. It's not quite the widest gap of any division's top 2 teams -- the AL West has a 10 win spread, and the NL West 12 -- but it's close.

That's not to say there isn't hope. Cleveland is pretty top-heavy -- one or two of their top projected performers getting hurt or significantly under-performing could close that gap in a hurry.

Yup. The original Detroit Cabrera extension was fantastic (2008-2015) -- but the second one (2016-2023) was highly dubious from the start. In some ways, it was worse than Pujols -- at least Pujols was a free agent, and you could argue that the Angels had to overpay just to get him; by contrast, Cabrera still had 2 years left on his original extension when Detroit gave him the new one.

Wowza - Aaron Hicks, 7 year 70 million from the Yanks

Hicks was already getting $6 mil this year, his final arb season. So it's kind of like a 6/64 FA contract (signed a year early), covering his age 30-35 seasons.

Somewhere DaveW is laughing

I'm not.

Still among the worst trades the Twins ever made.

Unwise, unnecessary, and unprovoked.

Wow, that’s a ton of money for Arenado, but he’s worth it. That’s more on average than Machado got in FA!

Meanwhile, Forscythe got a minor deal with Texas. Remember when we discussed bringing him back as our 2B? I’m much happier with Schoop and Gonzalez.

It wasn't at the time. No big tears were shed on the board when the trade was made. Hicks then had a typical terrible year his first year with the Yanks. The following year hindsight clicked in.

You can review the lengthy thread at the time it was announced, and find plenty of opinion on all sides of the matter. There were people with the prescience to call it on the spot what it turned out to be in retrospect: a bad trade. (You and I were both silent on the merits of the deal, at least in that thread. :) )

Here's the actual trade announcement thread.

Lots of takes both in favor and against.

And another 2019 free agent is off the table, in St Louis. What are the odds there is a great, or very good, player available at the position they need next year, when maybe they'll sign one to a long term deal? Waiting for the perfect moment to do anything rarely works.....

I remember playing him every day with a foot out the door. (shakes head).

Blue Jays sign Bud Norris to a minor league deal, worth $3 mil plus incentives if he makes the team.

Blue Jays also sign Clay Buchholz to a major league deal, worth $3 mil plus incentives.

Mets sign Carlos Gomez to a minor league deal.

You are referring to Bud Norris? He was bad the last 1.5 months or so. May be you will get something out of him at the beginning of the season if he is throwing 95. St. Louis was no longer interested.
