Game Thread: Twins vs Padres, 9/13/17 @ 7:10 PM CT

Whoa Nelly.    First game day thread ever.    Here goes nothing for the finale of a weird 2 game series.

1)   San Diego-Our visiting team today is also home to the avocado capital of the USA.    Which makes sense because guacamole is delicious.    The avocado is also the state fruit of California.     Which doesn’t make sense because I always thought that it was a vegetable and not a fruit.    But in a world where the tomato and cucumbers are considered fruit, who knows.    I think they’re just making things up now.

2) The Padres.  In a rebuild now and now also the only show in town outside of SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo now that the Chargers have bolted for Carson CA to become the Los Angeles Chargers of Carson.    They really like their animals in San Diego, don't they?    Their best player is arguably Will Myers, slashing .244/.328/.461 with 27 homers.    Currently, they are 65-80 and are fighting to stay out of the NL West cellar with the San Francisco Giants.

3) Last night.    How about those Twins last night?    With home runs in the first 7 innings, they set a new MLB record.    Not sure how they follow up last night’s performance tonight, but I’m sure Ervin “Magic” Santana will have something up his sleeve.

4) Sleep.    I’ve never appreciated sleep more than I did before September 1st.    September 1st also coincides with the birth of my son.    Becoming a dad is incredible, but I have a newfound appreciation for naps.    I've had a lot of thoughts about, zzzz.....

Won't be able to watch this one because we're going to see the youngest nephew in 'In the Heights' at the Ordway.

Because it's late the sleep thing will be a thing, too.

Happy Dadding!

Nice job on the intro!  Congrats on the birth of your son and I agree with you on the naps, but that does not go away as they grow up....and they do grow up fast.

Just watching the Royals tie the White Sox.  Never thought I'd find myself pulling for the White Sox, but here I sit doing just that.

21 straight for Cleveland.

Wow.

I'm thinking the division maybe getting away from the Twins.

Hot take, I know.

21 straight for Cleveland.

Wow.

Record is 26 by the 1916 Giants.

Funny thing about that team. They were sub .500 when the streak started in early September. They still ended the season 4th in the NL with 86 wins in a 154 game season, 7 games behind Brooklyn.

Cleveland 21 in a row is one of the numbers that caught my eye today.

Some others:

•Gibson's record at .500 and ERA<5. Who would have predicted that a month ago?

•Twins back to a +6 run differential.

•Twins sit 6 games over .500. Most the chasers are hovering around .500. Playing just .500 ball or slightly better just might be enough at this point.

•7, as in 7 more wins = winning record in 2017. Also their rank in runs scored in all of  MLB.

Going to the game Friday - 1st game I'll have attended in a long long time that had playoff implications.

This Lamet guy looks very good. Simple, direct pitching motion. A lot like what Gibson is trying to do. Lamet throws harder, but has only fastball, slider. Twins should figure him out by the second time around. Sit on the heater, lower half.

Probably why Lamet is averaging 5 1/3 IP per start.  He's dominant the first time.  Still pretty good the second time, but not quite as dominant.  After the second time, forget about it.  .902 OPS third time around.

Short to it, long through it. Lamet has good heat low, but it doesn't bend. Most mlb guys should be able to hit that. Heck, I'd announce it to the catcher: "I'm going to sit on the low fastball. What else you got?" He may have a decent slider, but can he rely on it? Bet not.

Twins haven't quite figured it out yet. Lamet is a one-pitch pitcher. Take away his low fastball, his other stuff doesn't have the same level of command. Decent slider, but just don't swing at it. Sit on the low heat, take yer walks, then drill the heat when he's forced to throw a strike. He'll get a few KO's with the slider. That's okay, he won't win with it. Take away his low heat, and watch him fall apart.

Hmm, Bremer was just saying that Erv only has 3 starts left.  Doesn't he have to start one more?  He said his last scheduled start is Saturday, Sept 23.  He could start the 28th with Mejia (or perhaps Colon) being skipped. Or the 29th on extra rest.

But if he starts on the 29th, he would be on short rest for the Wild Card game scheduled for Oct 3.

Edit: Never mind.  I can't count tonight I guess.
