It was nice to see the Twins on the happy end of a blowout again, as they absolutely clobbered Seattle, setting a franchise record for hits in the process. Eddie Rosario had three home runs, one off a Mariners catcher. I guess other teams are doing the whole catchers pitching thing now too.Twins 20, Mariners 7

Eduardo Escobar led the team’s march into the record books with a five-hit game. Kennys Vargas, Jason Castro and Rosario each had four hits. The Twins tallied seven runs in both the third and seventh innings. Run differential fixed.

 

And Miguel Sano wasn’t even in the lineup.

 

For Rosario, it was the first multi-homer game of his career. That alone is impressive, but what was especially peculiar about his night is he saw just nine total pitches. That’s not odd for the ultra-aggressive Rosie, but I wonder how many times a guy has hit three homers while seeing less than 10 pitches in game.

Kyle Gibson was bad, giving up six runs on 12 hits and a whole lot of loud contact, but in a game like this, the fact that he was able to go six innings was a big plus. Am I trying to polish a turd? Yeah, I guess. But the bullpen really needed that, seeing as the team is going to play six games over the next five days.

Santana has really struggled against Robinson Cano over his career, having given up six home runs over 51 plate appearances to his countryman. Altogether, current Mariners have a .918 OPS in 166 plate appearances against Ervin. Gaviglio is a 27-year-old rookie right hander who is making his sixth start of the season. Among 346 pitchers who’ve thrown at least 20 innings this year, Gaviglio ranks 54th with a 52.9 percent groundball rate (top 15 percentile).

This is a new feature today. I figured since the bullpen has become such a story line this season I’d work something in that may provide insight into who may be available the next night.

Please tho Levine, no Capps, Jespen deals. Try our system. Can't be any worse.

I believe he has been working the system.  I'd like to see him dig a little deeper.  Offense and defense seem to be on the uptick.  Would like to see more of those AA-AAA pitchers.  Couldn't be worse that a guy who give up 6 runs in 6 innings, when he had a 8 run lead in the third....

I'm sorry, but this is nothing new for Gibson over the past couple years. IMHO:  time to move on.

 

Beyond that, WHAT AND OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION!!  

Maybe Rosario, like we've seen with Sano, just needs more time off.  Escobar and Grossman getting more consistent AB's.  Could be a fun Summer!

Like the bullpen pitch tracker! How did you come up with the 20 pitch threshold? Belisle seems to get lit up on the second day when he goes two in a row. Gibby has always had a hard time following a good performance.

Yeah but to what? There's no one better out there. Until Santiago/Hughes come back, I'm okay with Gibson. He has his ups and downs but they have no one better.

That was just a nice, round number I landed on. Seems like most relievers average around 16 pitches per appearance, though guys like Duffey are closer to 20. I guess the red is a bit dramatic, it's not like 20+ pitches is abuse or anything like that, but it is a higher than usual workload.

That's because he's not very good, and so those good performances are random flukes where the ball finds gloves or he ran into a very weak lineup. Just the way baseball goes.

which is sadly disappointing...

 

And can we say surprising? Starting pitching quality was supposed to be the Twins problem this year, not depth. They had a ton of mediocre back-end starters and no front end. Now they have two front-end guys (albeit with some potential regression) and are picking up castoffs to start games. Baseball is a funny sport.

I live in Maine where coverage of anything not involving the word Boston (or New England during football season) is non-existent. Your game recaps are a great addition to the Twins Daily website but they do force me into a difficult decision every morning. Your recap or the minor league recap???? What do I do?

Kyle Gibson wasn't very good, but there were a few positives. He faced the same team twice in a row, and that team's offense is rolling right now. Also, he attacked the zone, 0 walks.
