Yeah.  These moves may be more about seizing an opportunity to painlessly clear roster space rather than immediately adding talent.

 

Heck, we just passed on Ehire Adrianza on waivers a week ago (after the Giants DFA'd him and the Brewers claimed him).

That's an interesting way to look at it considering both Park and Light fall under the "one-dimensional power" category, though obviously in very different ways.

What did we expect as a return for 2 months of Abad? The Red Sox didn't put the wool over our eyes. Receiving a flawed prospect should be expected for a guy like Abad.

I like this move.  It makes sense if we see more of this type of "clearing the house" for the 40 man.  As mentioned by another, I didn't realize Light was on the 40 man.  There is not room in the pen for Light so he can be AAA fodder.  Now we need to see a veteran signed so Danny can be the next one to be jettisoned off the 40 man.  If this happens, I will call the off-season a success.  He was over-hyped in 2013 and played out of his shoes.  Not going to happen again because he can't be trusted with a bat or a glove anywhere.

I suspect yes. Maybe a 60% chance of a claim.

 

Given that he can play multiple positions (badly) but is still quite young (age 26 season in 2017), I think there's a team out there that would put him on the 40-man with Spring Training just around the corner.

 

Would he make it to the 25 man roster out of Spring Training? Probably not. But he's the type of guy a team might pick up on a lark just to invite him to camp.

Agreed, and I wouldn't miss him. He's, at best, the 25th man on the roster. That spot is important, but it is also somewhat fungible (if you bother to try to have a good player, Mr. Smith) and a well run organization should have several good options depending on their needs at the time (defense, power, infielder, OF, whatever).

This raises a question for me on the waiver rules.  I'm pretty sure that anyone waived by a National League club has to pass through all of the National League clubs before the American League clubs get a chance at him during the regular season. Is that right and is that not true in the off-season? If that's the case, the Twins never had a chance at this guy the first time he was DFA'd because a National League team selected him.

Surprised we haven't been able to find a NL team to take him. He is clearly a ulility player they use there all the time. Can play several spots for the double switches that  happen all the time. Hopefully we can find a match before the DFA..... I am about 95 % sure he would get picked up.

Why are you surprised? he is one of the 5 worst players, out of 300+ players each of the last two years. Why would someone want that?

 

Usually those guys can field, or steal bases, or sometimes (rarely) hit.

Twins official site is mentioning his "versatility" every other sentence in their write-up. Mentioning that he plays SS, 2B, and 3B, which seems to contradict most of what I've read so far. In which case, it seems like they're trying to convince us that he's a valuable bench piece, while also ignoring the fact that we already have three guys on the bench who also play SS, 2B, and 3B.

I will be the contrarian and say no and here is my reasoning.  Last year he had a .240 BA, .269 OPS, and a .606 OPS...AND that was a big improvement over the previous year.  I just don't see teams willing to spend a roster spot for that.  He has some speed, but not the kind that raises eyebrows and with that bad OPS, speed does no good walking back to the dugout anyway.  I think every team has a DanSan lurking the minors somewhere.

I didn't see every game down the stretch last year, but I saw Pat Light pitch. He is supposed to have a big time fastball. I remember watching and waiting to see triple digits. Light seemed to want to throw all off speed stuff. Was he hurt or did I miss his fastball?

I thought the same thing. By my memory, he was usually at 93-94 and only occasionally hitting 96-97. Fangraphs had his average fastball at 95 though.

No. Light will be claimed. Park will be claimed. Chargois would be claimed. Any Twin on the 40 man not named Danny Santana will be claimed when designated for assignment. Arcia and Walker were claimed After Ryan ORourke made a triumphant return to the majors, how could you not look at any Twin castoff and not see success? Well, except for Danny Santana

I like this move. I think it puts a few players on notice - succeed or you'll be sent down.

 

I am anxious to see if Adrienza is as good a fielder as advertised. If so, he'll stick at SS.

 

As for Grossman – yes, he hit well last year, but not as well in three prior years. For sure I'd give him a chance, but if he reverts to his Astros norm, he should be gone, with his defense.

 

Interesting stat: Grossman played 190 games for three years with the Astros, hit .240/.327/.341/.668 with 11 home runs.

 

In 2016, he hit 11 home runs in 99 games, hitting .280/.386/.443/.828.

 

Does he really like the food at Target Field, or what?

 

Bottom line: Grossman should be on the MLB roster on opening day, but we cannot RELY on his 2016 hitting line. Give him a chance to prove 2016 wasn't a fluke, but don't just stash him on the roster for the whole year.

I don't think the Twins were fooled. His numbers were not impressive with the Sox either. The Twins simply decided to take the gamble.
