Carlos Gomez DFA'd

One of the biggest underachievers of the last 10 years, at least in terms of physical talent. I guess he's an example of the saying I've heard that the most important part of your body for playing baseball is your brain.

He is a free agent this off-season.  Will make no sense for the Twins to pick him up now, if they could sign him later, since this season they are not going anywhere.  On the other hand, if they can pick him and flip him for something, it might make sense indeed.  He has not been great the last 2 seasons for sure and he is the wrong side of 30...

Gomez was in the upper half of WAR for CFs just last year, even though he only played 111 games and had less than 500 PAs.  I'm not 100% sure he's done.

Posted

I hope he doesn't...

He always drove me nuts.

I really did like the way Go-go was with the young fans. There was a genuine bond there that was pretty cool.

Wow. that's quite a drop.

Was not sure of the trade when it happened.....

I'll say this, Houston isn't afraid to make decisions on players.

An impending free agent that you couldn't trade at the deadline. That would be a gutsy call to release an under performing for the last year player

The Twins already have a 4th outfielder on the roster. A no-bat, late inning defensive replacement. His name is Buxton. Wait, he was demoted already for poor offensive performance.

It doesn't happen often, even though it seems it should.

After his recent defensive gaffes, not sure someone will pick him up.  It's a maybe.  If the Twins are actually interested, guessing spring training invite.

Twins should definitely bring him in for 2017. He is the perfect plan B if Buxton still struggles. Best case is both kick ass and they can dump Gomez at the deadline or prior.

There is a variable reinforcement schedule that says players will rebound. Which player will be the player? As I do not think Gomez has been significantly injured, to many he would be the ideal rebound player. Thus Houston probably hung on to him longer. To avoid having any high priced player rebounding on a new team on another owner's  now less fat wallet is probably an unwritten rule of baseball Presidents of Baseball Operations.  The Valencia's of the world do not haunt a team. Ortiz does.

Cleveland?

Mets?

If I'm CLE, I take the chance....

Yeah why not Cleveland? Especially now that Brantley had another set back and is likely gone the rest of the season. Seems like a perfect low risk/ high reward opportunity for a team like them hunting for the playoffs.

I really hope they claim him if he falls to us. Give him the red carpet treatment and try to get the inside track on re-signing him for 2017 on a make good contract. The time it would buy us to keep Buxton in AAA, Rosario in a corner and DanSan on the bench would be so worth it.

When Gomez was traded... I was pissed. Gomez was terrible for us but he was so young. I thought the Twins should have been more patient.

That Speed... That Power... That Arm... The Kid had the potential to be one of the best and I was pissed about the trade.

I also suspected that the Twins wouldn't have given him up if there wasn't something not right about him.

Even as he started to show his potential with the Brewers... you saw glimpses of the behavior that may have led to the Twins moving on... yet... I was still pissed because of all that talent.

Now that the Astros have DFA'd him... I'm finally at peace and now for the first time since the trade.

I officially forgive the Twins for the Gomez/Hardy deal.

The Astros don't DFA him unless there is something else going on. It's a bad year but you don't bounce that kind of talent because of one bad year.

The Twins should Pass!!!

I can't believe I just said that

I always loved the Gomez/Hardy trade from the very moment it happened.  It was when they traded Hardy AWAY that I was pissed.

Agreed. Whoever claims Gomez should come to an agreement that he's staying at least for 2017.

It could also be a way to eliminate the need for DSantana... Rosario-Gomez-Kepler Grossman as the 4th OF and Buxton buying time in AAA sounds pretty intruiging!

Pass on Gomez for this year. Just takes away developmental AB's. Boras as his agent so there is no future deal that would fit in with this team. Now if he is unsigned shortly before next spring might be worth a call.

The Astros are in the playoff hunt and Gomez is going to be a FA at the end of this year.

They are making their decision based on what is best for this team as of today to make the playoffs in 2016, that's literally it. People are reading way to much into this.

I don't think teams get to negotiate with waiver claims before they happen.

I get that... The big Cuban is arriving soon.

But I guess they are also crying Uncle. Reed or White are also under performing and could have been sent down.

It was just last year... Gomez was a playoff boost by addition.

Now hes a playoff boost by subtraction.

There's a chance I'm reading the right amount.  :)

He had four seasons where he totaled above .700 OPS, two of those above .800, and lots of mediocrity in between.  His athleticism should add significant value in baserunning and defense, but I have to imagine is mental errors and attitude undercut that value (perhaps significantly).

Gomez and Delmon Young were fruits of the Bill Smith era, loads of talent but...   I hope as we the organization swings away from the Twins-way attitude-first players, we don't get back to giving up our best assets for such players.

Meh...I liked Go Go as much as anyone when he was with the Twins but he's not getting any younger. We have plenty of (much younger) outfielders that we need to get figured out.
