So just throwing it out there; last time Kurt Suzuki didn't get they liked for Suzuki at the deadline and decided to keep him, he got extended.

I've been long been saying Twins would extend Suzuki so that isn't surprising.

Though a lot of surprising today.

The only downside, imo, is that Suzuki is still in MN......it is hard to see how he wasn't dealt.

I wonder how much of Lucroy nixing the trade to Cleveland affected Suzuki staying in Minnesota

The Twins aren't done with Suzuki to that extent, I am pretty sure of that.  Who exactly would replace him?

But where's the fun in that kind of linear thinking? One of the first events in the Twins GM Search Challenge should be assembling a functional catching battery out of the body parts of AAAA catching prospects!

The problem is the deals Antony didn't make, which has been a theme in the past as well. This deadline certainly did nothing to indicate Antony represents anything other than a continuation of the same old.

Now we are into the realm of pure speculation.

I doubt very much there were teams out there wanting to unload top 100 prospects on the Twins for what they were offering.

It's been a theme in the past because it is founded on pure bunk.

Really? Didn't they eat money on the Nolasco deal? I don't recall Ryan doing that.....

They certainly DFA'd guys with money left on their contracts. In this case the Twins actually save money, which isn't exactly a tough sell to the Pohlads. It's an unusual trade for sure, so that's why there isn't a direct analogue from the TR days.

Bottom line is that they held onto players that should have been moved. Santana is arguable so I'm not too concerned about that, but Suzuki and Kintzler? Fail.

Because Ryan would have traded more than this?  I don't think TR moves that many guys at the deadline... call me nuts.

Also, not thrilled about Meyer.  I'd rather have DFAd Nolasco personally.

Probably quite a bit.  That deal was setting the stage for moving other catchers including Suzuki so by the time that Lucroy was rerouted to his final destination it was too late to get rid of Suzuki.

Well since they didn't trade Suzuki they might as well go ahead and extend him for 2017, there isn't a better internal option at the external options will be pricey.

If it was only about Meyer and Nolasco, I'd rather do the same.

Santiago has some scary peripherals, but if he does in 2017 what he did the past couple of years, the Twins could get back a pretty nice return this time next year.

Could is the operative word of course, but I'm all for a gamble. I was a huge Meyer guy, I've lost faith in the last couple months though. This absence with little info seems so ominous.

I hate you.....

Just to clarify, by liking your post I'm not liking your hating nicksaviking, or hating nicksaviking in general. ;)

It's really just more of an expression of the sense of relief that I feel when I see that there are other people like me who, after 5+ seasons of Twins suckdom, are also wary that the silver lining in any move by the Twins could turn out to be mercury instead.

How about just re-siging him as a free agent instead? An extension almost surely will require two additional years of commitment. If the Twins really, really super-duper want him, even they can afford to make him the top offer this off season, and maybe in the off season he will only require a one year deal.

Meh, I mean the Nolasco trade looks good, but we did give up Meyer.
The Abad trade was ok I guess.

But Suzuki definitely had some value, and they failed to move him. That is a pretty big failure IMO.

Which, normally, I'd agree with.  But since this team was clearly, actively looking for trades....perhaps there wasn't much interest?

I hope it is obvious I don't hate Nick. I think I met him 1 time in person.......he seemed nice enough to me. I guess I should have typed "I hate this post"......

What is Suzuki's value?  There was a call for him to be DFA'd 2 months ago (and 14 and 20)!

He is a catcher with a 102 OPS+

IMO, it's important to say that Antony did a lot of good with the moves he made.  Would we have liked to see more? Sure.  But he did well.  Can't always get everything done you want done.  I give his trade deadline a solid B, which is way better than I think our last GM would have done.

I dunno man, catchers seem to get traded all the time, hell look at what we fetched for Drew Butera?

If the offers weren't that great, you still make the move IMO. Keeping Suzuki around the rest of this year before he heads to free agency is pointless for this club.

You take the best offer you get and you move on, I refuse to believe that nobody would have taken Suzuki at this stage.

The Mets, Dodgers, Mariners, Astros, Indians all needed catcher help, none of them would give up a C+ prospect at the very least? Doubtful

I don't see how people can't like the Abad deal.

1. He is 30 and a minor league signing this offseason.........with much scrutiny coming when the signing was announced.

2. There are several arms in the minors many posters have been more or less demanding get a spot in the pen.

3. They got a former 1st round pick, who is left handed and can hit triple digits.  I understand the command issue but also the upside

As we are trying (I think) to get younger with our pitching staff, I hate the idea of just giving Suzuki away.

As much as I don't like Suzuki not traded......I think I'd give Antony a B or B+ for this deadline.......which is a really high grade for me.

I'll give him a C+.  Really nothing to the Abad or Nunez deals, they flipped them for decent returns (I would've done both but I'm not going to give much credit).

Not trading Suzuki or Kintzler is a big swing and a miss for me.

Because he has been a terrible defensive catcher and the Twins have the worst ERA in baseball with him as their catcher? That leadership would be sorely missed?

 . If I were less than 110%* certain that you didn't hate nicksa, I wouldn't have said a thing.

* 110 percent means still 100% certainty even when adjusted for offense-friendly PCL park factors.

Make it 111%.

The Mod Note was not aimed at Mike's comment. I can usually take a joke, even on a day when Kurt Suzuki wasn't traded.

Which I guess is just about every day.

I'm sure that has nothing to do with the pitchers who has thrown to him......
