Interesting article on the offficial Twins website -- http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/147966994/phil-hughes-throws-pen-session-nears-return

A few quotes:

"Right-hander Phil Hughes threw a 45-pitch bullpen session without any issues at Target Field on Sunday and is scheduled to join the Twins in Kansas City on Wednesday to throw a simulated game."

"Molitor added that right-hander Mike Pelfrey, who has struggled recently with a 10.22 ERA over his last three starts, will make his next scheduled start, on Wednesday against the Royals. But another subpar outing could put Pelfrey's rotation spot in jeopardy, as rookie right-hander Tyler Duffey has been pitching well, with a 2.67 ERA over his last five starts. Duffey, though, has thrown 170 1/3 innings this season after throwing 149 1/3 in 2014."

There is also discussion of Hughes possibly pitching a rehab start for the Lookouts in the AA playoffs.

I had totally forgotten Duffey's innings issue. If Pelfrey is terrible now, and Duffey runs out of innings (as a starter, at least) how does that playoff rotation go again? Hughes-Gibson-Milone . . .  . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . .

Why does this quote sound as though Pelfrey is still ahead of Duffey in the rotation hierarchy?

This simply cannot be true is it? One non-terrible start by Pelfrey and Hughes replaces Duffey in the rotation?  This "seniority" stuff has to stop, the team needs to open their eyes and see what's going on with the rest of the league.  Play the young players.

Adding Hughes back to the rotation has to be a plus.  If Duffey has run out of innings, Twins will have to use other options, hopefully not Plefrey.

All minor league teams' regular season are over. Kernels are in the MWL playoffs.

Would the Twins really send a rehab guy to a MiLB team that's in the playoffs?  I'd find that kinda stunning.

If Duffery has run out of innings, and Berrios has run out of innings.....that does not speak well of their planning in June and July.....let's hope they let Duffey keep pitching.

Yeah, but how many people actually expected the Twins to be in the playoff hunt this year?  I believe that, based on the last 4 years, management was always planning for next year.

If Duffey absolutely, positively has an innings issue, than he should go to the pen and May should come back to the rotation.

I'm not going to buy that May will have a hard time getting stretched back out if Hughes is coming back from a month off and they'll be able to get him up to speed by doing simulated games.

If you are not allowed to change your plan half way through the year....there are issues. It doesn't matter what anyone thought in March, it matters what they thought in June and July.

Well we all know for sure we will be in the playoffs next year (and for years to come) even if we miss this year. So it's all good.

It doesn't.  Read the next quote with taking risks at this time of the year.

Mike,

The projections I saw back then gave us about a 10% chance of a wildcard spot.  Of course, a wildcard spot is a 1 game playoff.  Therefore, assuming a 50/50chance of winning that game, the Twins had a 5% chance of actually participating in a playoff series.  Are you really suggesting they should have managed their pitching staff around this 5% chance?

Personally, I would have managed the young players based on their development given the 5% chance of playing a playoff series.

What's his strikeout limit?

No, they only have strikeout limits on our pitchers. They are only allowed 6 or fewer per nine innings. That is why Duffey will be shut down, and Berrios wasn't allowed to pitch.

Yes, I am suggesting that cutting Berrios' innings and Duffey's innings in the minors to 5 inning starts does NOT hurt their development, and keeps them available in case odds/plans change. Yes, I am suggesting that.

Your interpretation could not possibly be further off.

I think that's a poor suggestion, Mike.  Do you pick a couple of minor starters and limit them to 5 inning starts next season with the thought that if they may help the big club in Sept, they'd be available?

There's no reference to an innings limit in that article; Bollinger only mentions Duffey's 2015 innings versus his 2014 innings.

Trevor May made 28 starts in 2014 and the Twins never shut him down (his innings were lower thanks to a bunch of short starts and a brief injury). Like Duffey is today, he was 24 years old. Tyler Duffey has made 28 starts this season.

If they shut Duffey down, I'll be furious... But I think some are letting the tail wag the dog here. Until the Twins actually make a comment about Duffey's innings, I'll assume he has a rotation spot through the end of the season. Seeing Bollinger make a reference to innings without any kind of quote from the Twins means absolutely nothing; he's merely writing an article and feeding the readership information the Twins may or may not care about.

Rob Antoney discussed Berrios on Inside Twins yesterday. Berrios had a difficult June and righted himself in July. Since he wasn't on the radar until August, why would you hold him back in June and July?

"But another subpar outing could put Pelfrey's rotation spot in jeopardy, as rookie right-hander Tyler Duffey has been pitching well"

Doesn't that imply that if Pelfrey has a "par" or better outing his rotation spot is safe?

I hope the tone of that quote is just trying to be kind to Pelfrey, because there should be nothing he can do with his next start that will save his spot.

When Hughes is ready, he's out.  If it's anything but that, it's nothing short of stupid.
