@afansview: Imagining Gary Gaetti watching the #MNTwins 9th inning & telling Joakim Soria, "It's hard to pitch with both hands around your throat."

Posted

I will never again say mockingly, "So you're telling me there's a chance?" and "As expected."

Fell asleep early, checked out scores this a.m., and said to myself, "Wouldn't it be the cat's meow if they had an epic comeback?"

And the team said, "You're welcome."

I was finishing watching the season five finale of Game of Thrones, and stopped checking the game in the 8th, when they were down 6-0.

Then when I was going to bed, I checked my phone for the score. I had to blink twice, because the score didn't compute. I first read it as an 8-6 loss, and thought, oh, they made a game of it. And then, I realized that 8 was in the Twins column. Yowza!

I think Dozier is...Arya Stark?

Brian Dozier for MVP.

Not really but name a more valuable player for their team?

OPS is a tad low for an MVP, but he's a second baseman playing elite defense.  I would think if he keeps this up (especially if he its anything close to 40 home runs), he should be in real consideration.

Until Mike Trout stops being Mike Trout, he's the AL MVP.

The guy is on pace for another 10 WAR season.

True. But Dozier is gaining mindshare, even amongst the national press corps.

OK, I'm old and my memory isn't the greatest but I seem to remember a huge comeback against the A's in 91 that was sorta like this.  Brian Harper had a big hit in that game I think.

Definitely. I'm not taking away anything from Dozier but I've been watching baseball for 30 years and I don't think I've ever seen a ballplayer as flawless as Trout.

He has a career OPS of .956, an isoD of nearly .100, a career batting average over .300, can steal 40 bags (if he feels like it), and plays Gold Glove up-the-middle defense. He's not ****ing human.

Mutant and proud.

Did a little googling, and one analysis from 2007 of 73 years of boxscores showed "213 teams came back from a deficit of four runs after eight innings. That’s out of 44,537 attempts, or a success rate of under 0.5%."

Pretty elite company we keep.

It was '65 and started a real swoon for the Yanks.

Picky picky picky, but I was a Yankees fan at the time, and I remember 1965 differently. The season started out terribly for them, they got somewhat better but never made anything like a run at the pennant. So I looked it up. High water mark for them was 39-40. The game you remember (5-4 Yankees going into the bottom of the ninth, 2-run homer by Killer to reverse the margin) put the Yankees at a majestic 41-46 for the season at that point.

The game was a turning point for the Twins' season, which was already off to a fine start, but it had little impact on the Yankees'. The fork was already stuck in 'em.

Does anyone have a link to the Tiger Broadcast? I'd love to hear what they had to say (or not say).

Ooou … I know what I'm going to watch again … the 9th inning of the Tigers broadcast. Mwahahaha …

I liked his version better.

As a Danny Santana guy- huge hit for a guy that I bet everyone watching was hoping would get pinch hit for.
Molitor must have huge round ones- he was certainly setting himself up to get second guessed!

I'm still holding out hope that Santana will return to last year's form.

It all depends on where the teams are at at the end of the season. If L.A. is out of it and the Twins are in it … Trout shouldn't get the same consideration, imo.

We have a long way to go for this discussion. But it's fun thinking about.

Now I kind of wish this would have been a White Sox game just to see/hear the professionalism of Hawk's broadcast.

Does this season remind anybody of the 2006 or 2009 season's?  I'm really starting to get that vibe from these guys.  My optimism is getting pretty tough to contain.

Just bought a Dozier jersey and told my wife we need to go to more games. Before the season started I told her I'd like to cut back, not so much the cost, but the 4 hour drive from Sioux Falls.  Being the trooper that she is, she told me to pick a weekend or two.

I was there in the left field bleachers not far from where the Killer's line drive landed. It was more a psychological thing than anything. The Yanks had won the pennant nine out of the previous ten years, and the Twins had been frustratingly close. The game was kind of a "king is dead, long live the king" moment that made the team and the upper midwest believe it was actually possible to overcome the Yankee mystique. There was also a sense that we were a big league team in a big league city--a coming of age moment in the grand scheme of things. Two days later, we hosted the All Star game, and it was all of a piece.

Yeah … certainly not as fun. The Tigers broadcast team actually gave props to the Twins and seemed just as excited by the Dozier home run. But, watching the Tigers broadcast unearthed this little prank on Hunter. This clip didn't catch the end showing Hunter literally on the ground laughing … and of course, hugged it out all out in the end.

You youngsters won't remember, but the only thing this comes close to this is the Killebrew homer against the Yankees in the last game before the All-Star break in 1969 I think. That game was the send off for the remainder of the year. Wow! Just effing awesome!

I was in 1st grade then. '65 it was.   I still remember that game-  it surely was a season- defining moment.  This game has that same feeling.  Good on ya, Curt!

Arrrgh!  Now this means I'm going to have to watch all the rest of the games to the bitter end, regardless of the score.   :D

I'm not someone who won't vote for someone on a losing team, so Dozier would probably be around 6th or 7th on my ballot.
