Fun With Numbers: 2015 Edition

The Twins have played 81 games out of 162, and won 43. Employing a bit of number fun, I extrapolate 86 wins on the season. Oh, and Mauer with double-digit homers. 11!1

If I'm not mistaken, that extrapolates to 162 games played, as well. Good show!

Division records relative to .500:

AL Central: +19

NL West: +9

AL West: -1

NL Central: -3

AL East: -11

NL East: -13

Today:

NL Central: +15

AL Central: +7

AL East: +7

AL West: +1

NL West: -3

NL East: -27

Things can shift quite quickly if just a few teams go on a roll or into a dive, especially when there aren't many intradivision games.

Today:

NL Central: +27

AL Central: +8

AL East: +6

AL West: +2

NL West: -11

NL East: -32

Pittsburgh is 30-12 since May 22 and the Cardinals are, well, the Cardinals.

Nice save @glenperkins - you tied Eddie Guardado for 3rd on the #MNTwins all time list. 116!

Back when they were touting this new group young starting pitchers around 2008 (was it Baker, Slowey, Blackburn, Perkins?) who would long be long term pieces to the team's future  - who would have predicted that Perkins would be the last man standing -- and it would be as an All-Star Closer.

Through 6 games (17.2 IP) the entire Twins bullpen has amassed 9 Ks between them.  There are 30 MLB pitchers who have at least 9 Ks individually.

'The Tigers set a modern-day American League record Thursday by extending their season-starting shutout streak to 24 innings before Minnesota scored in a 7-1 win for Detroit.

After blanking new Twins manager Paul Molitor's team in the first two games of the season -- started by David Price and Anibal Sanchez -- Shane Greene shut out Minnesota for the first six innings to break the record held by the 1947 Chicago White Sox.

According to STATS, the longest such streak in the majors since 1912 is 32 innings by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.'

Things were a little more bleak at the beginning of this thread.

That NL East is a division in the International League no?

In 10 of his last 13 appearances, Boyer has allowed the first batter he faced to reach base.

My eyes now hurt. If I was the manager.......I might not bring him in with a man on 2nd.....

Buddy of mine predicted that Joe Mauer's power slump is over, and he will get over 20 homers this season. He's a really nice guy, so I tried to hide my snicker over the phone...

Let's see, for Mauer to total 21 homers, and he's got 6 at the moment, so if I subtract 6 from 21, I get roughly 15 or so...

So Mauer would have to mash taters at a 30-homer pace for the second half of the season. Theoretically this is possible, given his career high several years ago. However, the fences at Target are farther back than at the Dome, so he'd have to muscle up quite a bit more than he's done so far this season. Either that, or he'd have to perfect his pull power swing, which we have seen zero sign of happening so far.

I don't see it. 12 to 15 maybe, because that's simply double what he's got now. Mauer does seem to be hitting balls where they're pitched now, rather than trying too hard to pull, which is a good sign for his average, but doesn't mean a thing for dingers. A power surge at this point is a whole different matter.

Kyle Gibson's 2.85 ERA is the fourth-lowest by a Twins starter heading into the All-Star break since 1992. (Minimum of 12 starts)

July 7:

NL Central: +27

AL Central: +8

AL East: +6

AL West: +2

NL West: -11

NL East: -32

Pittsburgh is 30-12 since May 22 and the Cardinals are, well, the Cardinals.

At the break:

NL Central: +26:  +28 v NL East, +1 v NL West, -3 v AL Central

AL Central: +19:  +5 v AL East, +11 v AL West, +3 v NL Central

AL East: +3:  -5 v AL Central, +2 v AL West, +6 v NL East

AL West: -5:  -2 v AL East, -11 v AL Central, +8 v NL West

NL West: -8:  +1 v NL East, -1 v NL Central, -8 v AL West

NL East: -35: -28 v NL Central, -1 v NL West, -6 v AL East

The AL Central appears to be a very strong division. For the Twins to be in this division and have the second best record in the league speaks highly of their performance so far this year.

He's on the roster, I'd find a way to use him......

Tossing Batting Practice?

Just kidding - I think Boyer is doing fine, though he seems to not be the right guy for the high leverage spots - probably should be Trevor May in that role until they let him start again.

bring him in only for situations that call for an intentional walk. problem solved.

The Twins are the only team in the AL with all 5 current members of the rotation (Santana, Hughes, Gibson, Milone, Pelfrey) sporting an ERA under 4.00

The top four starters (Chance, Kaat, Merritt, Boswell) made 137 starts and between them pitched 1000 innings. The four also combined for 20 relief appearances.

Times have changed.
