At this writing, the 2015 Minnesota Twins have a staff ERA of 4.53 and a staff FIP of 4.46. Do we now have emerging proof that this year's defense is approximately major league average and should not be held as an excuse for underperformance like last year?

Neither are overly good with such small sample sizes, but to Use UZR/150 on 19 or so games worth? Would you say a guy's BA was going to be .219 over a season if his BA right now was .219?

One uses UZR and DRS, not UZR/150. DRS is total defensive value and while not perfect this early, it beats UZR this early and certainly UZR/150 this early.

UZR/150 is basically worthless unless you want to compare a guy with say 90 games played to a guy who played 150 or so. That is pretty much all it's good for and even then it's shaky. The real stats are UZR and DRS.

As jimmer alludes to, UZR/150 is scaling a ton on these early season numbers. You really want to use it to scale down numbers larger than 150, not scaling up from 15.

Hunter has 0.8 runs saved by UZR in 12% of a season, a feat probably accomplished by even the league's worst outfielders. (Case in point: Ryan Doumit had 0.6 UZR in a slightly fewer innings in the Braves' outfield last year.)

The equivalent would be saying that Eduardo Nunez had a 100 doubles/150 mark right now. (Although I guess that is kinda fun, thus germane to this thread )

With the 1-run shutout win last night, the Twins moved to 3-3 in shutout games and 3-3 in 1-run games.

With an 11-12 record the Twins are in third place in their five-team division. There are 13 MLB teams with a better record, 5 teams with the same record, and 11 teams with a worse record.

The Twins also have the best record in baseball since the calendar turned to May, and have allowed the fewest runs. And driven in the fewest runs, but that is only "fun", not fun.

I am really looking forwad to a May Day May Day. Trevor May on May first would really get my juices flowing.

There aren't any numbers there. So maybe this isn't the right place for this, but I thought it was fun.

I'll add some numbers to make this appropriate.

The Twins are last in the league in strikeouts per 9, at 5.66, no surprise (Indians lead at 9.82).

What's surprising or "fun" is that the Twins starters are actually missing MORE bats than their pen. Starters are at 5.66 (Indians 10.26)and while the pen is a dismal 4.82 (Dodgers 10.77).

I hope that the new arms getting a chance to throw in the Twins pen can help change some of those numbers around. If the Twins can get an extra K or two from their pitching staff, it sure would give our terrible defense a rest.

When Pelfrey plunked three batters in the fourth, he became just the second pitcher in Twins history to hit three batters in one inning. Bert Blyleven also did it on Sept. 28, 1988, against the A's.
