Gene Glynn named Twins 3B Coach

In the last week, the Twins have named Paul Molitor their new manager. They named Tom Brunansky as their hitting coach.

Today, they named Gene Glynn as their next third base coach. The move is not surprising. It was clear that Glynn would be added to the major league coaching staff.

He has been a coach and a 3B coach in the big leagues several years in the past:

1994-1998 - Rockies

1999 - Expos

2000-2002 - Cubs

2003-2006 - Giants

Good hire. Smart guy who was also a scout in the Rays organization for a few years (2007-2011).

He has managed the Rochester Red Wings the last three years.

Only surprise to me is being named the 3B coach. I was around 50-50 he'd be the bench coach. Next to pitching coach, that's the spot that fascinates me the most. Have a few ideas in mind that would make good sense. Still can't shake the idea of Sveum as a possibility here.

I can live with this.  Anyone hear anything about where the 'process' is in hiring the rest of the coaches?

I figured he was destined for 3B or bench coach. I've read good things about Glynn on multiple occassions - good hire.

Now, let's find a pitching coach and bench coach...

obligatory "still waiting for a fresh, outside perspective" post....and yes, I do think that matters. It matters in every business.

that said, I think you have to look at what he did in AAA and be impressed. I think he's a good fit for the team.....but you need outside voices also.

Yeah, I get that and am waiting/hoping to have that yet as well.  Am just waiting to see who all the assembled coaches will be before stating the obvious and obligatory.  ;)  But that said, even though Glynn's most recent stint has been with the Twins, and was impressive as you said, he's made his rounds through other organizations as well, so maybe he comes to us as a 'mixed voice.'  It's a beginning.

I think it is a good choice. Plus brings some management experience. Rochester seemed to be doing better also under his managing.

Glenn did very well in Rochester, considering what he was given and the up and down movement of players.  This could be a start for helping with the players who are coming up from Rochester.  Dougie is probably going to be in AA, so either the AA manager moves to AAA or Twins go outside the organization for the AAA manager.  That would probably be a good thing.

All of you are correct, pitching coach will probably be last.

Still waiting for a fresh, outside perspective!  :)

Also waiting for the Hispanic perspective, though considering the current makeup of the country club I guess any Hispanic perspective is also an outside perspective.

He has quite the resume with other teams. I don't mind this promotion at all. He hasn't been on the 1 Twins Way line of thought his whole life. I think this is good.

Dougie to Rochester? Will Jeff Smith stay at AA. Remember, managers have to have a desire to live in Chattanooga or Rochester, too. Dougie chose Ft. Myers for family reasons and the Twins put him there. Be interesting to see how the Twins minor league assignments do fill out.

I think that Glynn is an outside perspective. He's only been in Rochester for 3 seasons after a wealth of experience in various capacities elsewhere.

The Twins have now hired a coach from Latin America.

And no, I don't think Mientkiewicz is a shoe-in for Rochester. I still say Chattanooga. I tweeted earlier that my (complete) guess remains: Mauer in Rochester, Mientkiewicz in Chattanooga, Smith in Ft. Myers, Watkins in Cedar Rapids... but that's just guessing. hard to know.

Glynn definitely has a variety of pro baseball experience... although I see he was born and raised in Minnesota, including college, and has already made a home here for some time.  I like the "local boy" storyline as much as anyone, but it does seem like the Twins trot it out a bit more frequently than other organizations.

Just to echo, Glynn has worked for the Expos, Rockies, Cubs and Giants in different capacities as coach or manager since 1986. Four organizations and 25 years before joining the Twins.

And Minnesota's first Mr Basketball back in 1975.  Glynn is his own man, people might forget, the Red Wings were ready to dump the Twins, he turned the fortunes of a moribund Rochester franchise 180 degrees towards the positive.  He's the perfect fit to be one of the top two guys who will be whispering in Molitor's ear as the voice of managing experience, as well as carrying out the manager's game plan on the basepaths.

The better prospects should spend more time in AA than AAA. Doug will know the AA players well. It's a good fit.

Absolutely right, Chattanooga projects to practically carry a potential starter at every position, plus perhaps half of a future bullpen, as well as at least two future SP mainstays.  And for Dougie, a much easier flight connection to his home in Southern Florida.

Steinbach next?

I don't see him coming back as bench coach because I feel the Twins will reach out to former managers to fill that role (Guillen, Renteria) to assist Molitor, unless they feel Glynn fills that role. I'm not against him returning as a special assistant coaching catching, though. We need him more than most, but I doubt he gets through to Suzuki on pitch framing. He may reach Pinto, though.

Who are some of the rumored prospects for pitching and bench coaches? (Please don't say Blylevan)

Most say Cuellar will fill pitching coach, but I'm not buying that. I've thrown Dom Chiti, Frank Viola, and Marty Mason out there, but what do I know? Steinbach could be a good bet to return as bench coach, but I'd like to see either Ozzie Guillen or Rick Renteria fill that role, if they're willing.
