Again, apples and oranges. Volpe's k percentage this year is basically half of Outman's. Volpe is about 22%, and Outman is over 40.

I'm not comparing directly.  Both are challenged hitters those guys aren't hard to find. The Twins already tried reclamation player Gray and Kreidler do we really need another one?   If Volpe is the get I'd rather keep Jeffers. Just my opinion.

Sure, but Volpe is still barely 25, and has had success in the majors. That's the difference for me compared to everyone else you mentioned.

And who knows, maybe this trade rumor never materializes and it doesn't happen. I'd just be open to the idea of it is all.

Shortstop has been the most underperforming position in a lineup that leads the American League in runs scored.

Relative to the league, our RF, 1B, and 3B are performing worse offensively than SS.

And just in terms of raw OPS+, 3B (81 OPS+) and RF (68 OPS+) are lower than SS (84 OPS+)

I've got a little bit of a thing about the Yankee's. I just don't like the idea of them pushing off players they don't like or want on the team to get a really great player in Jeffers.  They always beat us so I just don't like the idea of this trade as IMO it makes us look weak taking on their trash.  I could be completely irrational on this one, but it strikes me a bit like the Outman trade did.

Gleyber Torres left New York and was better his first year in Detroit than his last year in New York. He's still only 29.

But you aren't wrong; for the Yankees or any team, there aren't tons of 24-25 year olds who had success with a team, fought injuries, and then were moved out due to another player in their position coming up. I'm having a hard time finding comps for this kind of deal for players that young.

Plus, the trade for Outman was for a reliever that has always had injuries right? This deal IS more valuable in that sense right?

I think someone mentioned this earlier - I wouldn't mind the Twins giving Volpe a chance, but he can't be the primary player coming back in a trade. If the deal is one of their top 6 prospects & they want to include Volpe or Doval or both then fine. If the return is just Volpe & Doval, move on to the next team.

Its sets the bar. This is what Tampa has to beat, or the Yankees have to top.

If Keith Beauargard is that good then why can't he get Kreidler...

Take a look again at the before-and-after numbers Kreidler had, Tigers vs Twins.  I'm inclined to give Keith credit.  Coaching hitters is an ever-evolving thing, so I hope there are ideas to keep Kreidler playable, if opposing pitchers have adjusted to the first round of adjustment the coach suggested last Spring.

But did he help Gray?  Needs to be equal opportunity to make this work, lol.

He can fix Volpe but somehow not Outman?

False.

This sets the bar for what is a laughable proposal from a Yankee stooge.

And MAYBE that's true. That could be. All of this is just a rumor, right?

What will be fun is when trades happen we can actually break down the actual deals, right? For now, it's all rumor and conjecture.

Concur. This bar is underground.

Volpe has more to work with than Outman does.

Outman had a year at the MLB level approximately 7 miles above anything Volpe has done. His MLB career OPS + is still higher than Volpe's.

I was more speaking to his k rate. It's always been double what Volpe has. Plus, Volpe is more than 4 years younger than Outman right now today, so they are still different in both age and k rate.

Unless he could help Gray's glove at SS, I literally don't care about that player.

Take my response as whatever degree of tongue-in-cheek your own comment was intended.  😄

It doesn’t take much to beat Volpe and Doval. Neither one has much trade value at the moment. They are high floor throw-in players. The Twins have found players almost as good on waivers. The Twins would be doing the Yankees a favor taking on their salaries. The Twins should get a better prospect because they helped the Yankees dump salary in the trade.

Volpe and Doval would be a fair trade for Josh Bell and Taylor Rogers, not for Ryan Jeffers.

I'm not convinced this is better than keeping Jeffers and attempting to make the playoffs.

"For a front office looking to compete now while building for the future, this is exactly the type of creative buy-low opportunity worth exploring."

Why would the Twins be trading one of the best players in a premium position this year for a buy-low opportunity? How does this help the Twins for the future?

One superior player for 2 below average major leaguers. Jeremy Zoll would never do that, especially when we have 2 SS prospects much better than Volpe knocking on the major league door. Hard pass!

I don't know how much  Beauargard has helped the hitters this year, but this offense is the best I have seen in a long time.  Still Pop was supposed to be a savant last year and this years Blue Jays team doesn't look as good to me. From third in OPS 2025 to 29th in 2026.  You'd think if they have that type of outsized influence it would be more static than that. IMO always comes down to the the players, coach can help some but players have to perform not the coach.

This I can agree with, even if I do see a chance of some value eventually with Volpe.

Fun talking point :)

I'm ok taking a flyer on Volpe, but not as part of a deal that involves anyone on the 26 man roster, unless they've got a weird thing for Kody Funderburk 🙃

Mitch Williams was known as Wild Thing.  Here, we've got Weird Thing.

The Twins need to set the bar, not a lowball offer from the Yankees.

Ted Schwerzler suggested onX earlier today the following: Jeffers and Larnach to NYY for COF Jasson Dominguez, a former MLB Top 100 prospect who has struggled in the majors, RHP Carlos Lagrange, a current MLB Top 100 prospect, LHP Kyle Carr and INF Stiven Martinez, both NYY Top 20 prospects. This sounds better than Volpe and Doval, but I'm still not sure I would do it.

Ryan Kreidler is the 27th ranked SS in MLB and his offense is fading as he gets more playing time. SS is definitely a need.

It's a need right now but you don't trade Jeffers for the immediate term.   Just hang on to him if the only thing you care about is the immediate term.  Trade Jeffers if you can get one of their better pitching prospects.  Those guys could actually play a role in building a contender.  Volpe gets replaced by Culpepper or Houston and plays no role in building a true contender.  Do we want to contend or pretend?
