The trade offers keep coming in on Joe Ryan. SI.com has put together three "can't refuse" deals. The Red Sox seem to have the most interest currently. Let's see what everyone has to say.

1. Boston Red Sox

Twins get:

  • OF Jhostynxon Garcia
  • OF James Tibbs III
  • RHP Luis Perales

Red Sox get:

  • RHP Joe Ryan

I think if this deal were on the table, the Twins would have to think long and hard about it. Garcia is a ready-now 22-year-old OF. The #2 prospect in the Red Sox system and #89 according to MLB.com. It would also net them a 22-year-old left-handed hitting OF James Tibbs III and their best RHP, Luis Perales. Would this deal be enough for the Twins to pull the trigger?

2. Seattle Mariners

Twins get:

  • C Harry Ford
  • SS Felnin Celesten
  • 1B Tyler Locklear

Mariners get:

  • RHP Joe Ryan
  • RHP Griffin Jax

This deal would ultimately get the Twins their catcher of the future, a young SS, and possibly a slugging 1B that they have coveted for years. The Twins might want more, considering Jax would be included in this deal.

3. Chicago Cubs

Twins get:

  • RHP Jaxon Wiggins
  • OF Kevin Alcantara
  • RHP Brody McCullough

Cubs get:

  • RHP Joe Ryan

I don't like dealing with the Cubs, but this deal would give the Twins a very talented RHP in Jaxon Wiggins, a 6'6'' powerful OF Kevin Alcantara, and another RHP, Brody McCullough. The Cubs want to address SP, so maybe the Twins like this deal or offer a counteroffer.

These are at least plausible, but I'd want more from each deal to move the needle to accepting.

I'm not thrilled to hear Seattle moved Harry Ford to LF.  I know they have Raleigh, but that isn't something I love to see from a top catching prospect.

I think that's the main reason they wanted to try him out in LF. He has only strictly played C and DH this year in Triple-A. Having Raleigh will almost certainly make the Mariners include him in any deal. IMO

He's a very good hitter with speed. They need a LF.... Unlike the twins, maybe they didn't want to move him back and forth.... fangraphs still thinks he's a catcher. Fwiw.

Isn't Baseball Prospectus the one that really hones in the defensive angle?  Because if so, the fact that he was ranked #34 in 2024 and fell off their rankings this year doesn't bode well.

So pretty much a low end top 100 prospect to headline each of these trades? Hard pass.

Seems really easy for the national pundits to find trades when they're looking to move good players off of unexciting teams they don't actually follow.

Reds got a 60, 40+, and two more for Castillo. Which, didn't work for the reds long term yet..... No way I deal Ryan for anyone ranked lower than Jenkins, unless there are three 45+

According to the Mariners his swing was long and his approach was to "kill the ball" last year, and that's what attributed to the high strikeouts and a bad 2024. He worked with his swing and timing and started out 2025 really hot and has continued to play well. .858 OPS is good for a C, and his ability to get on base and use his speed is a huge plus. I do agree with you about his defense, it will need some work, and I think the Twins should ask for more, but he's a starting block.

If I am trading Ryan,  you have to be giving at least 1 top 20 prospect.  It has to be an elite player that is headlining the deal.    None of these trades are can't refuse, I would turn all 3 down.  I like Ford, but would need a lot more to make me be willing to move Ryan.

These are all easily refused deals from the Twins side. There is not a necessity to give away players.

Boston doesn't match up with the Twins imho.

Seattle might be a possibility but the idea a team gets Ryan alone for those three is ludicrous much less add Jax. Seattle might take Jax and Castro for Ford and Ryan Sloan. Maybe the Twins add Coulombe. Celesten will not stick at shortstop which reduces his value. Colt Emerson is the prospect to slide into shortstop at some point. I think Seattle holds him at all costs.

The Cubs are an ill fit as well. I don't see a fit there.

Ryan is totally worth 2 top 50 prospects plus a 3rd player if we are talking prospects. Ryan is a guaranteed item while the kids are not anything at this point.

If a team wants the Twins guys with 2+ years left of control, they must pay the price. If I was a Mariner or Philly fan, I'm pushing to give up the prospects (future possibilities) for a shot now.

Listening to most of the national guys, they really give off the impression that they think the Twins HAVE to make these trades. Which makes the national guys sound clueless, because the Twins obviously don't.

Barring injury, the value of Ryan, Duran and Jax won't decrease before this off season as they'll still have two years of control left. And of course, fingers crossed the Twins are sold and THEY are a buyer a couple months from now.

The national guys are clueless. Keith Law is a prospect writer for The Athletic and pretty in tune. He probably cringes when he sees these offers.

There are plenty of people on Twins Daily who have watched all of these players mentioned numerous times including a few of the writers. Just because a guy has a national deal as a writer doesn't necessarily mean they are up on the players.

Like you said, the Twins can keep everyone.

You can always find trading partners who will give you a top-100 bat as the headliner for your good pitching.  You certainly can make a greater number of trades if you are willing to go that route, but IMO it's lazy.  Me, i want arms in return for my arms, and that is much harder to line up.

Two of the three proposals listed here are mainly for bats; maybe I listen to the Cubs depending on how my scouts like those two pitchers.  As said above, some national writers like to pick the carcass of teams out of favor, and they don't give serious thought to what would actually be good for the team.

No, I keep Ryan unless some team is willing to deal value for equivalent value.  The trades I like are in the other direction - Arraez for Lopez, Cruz for Ryan, those are the ones I give great credit to the FO for.  If the Twins can line up another one like that, then maybe I'd consider dealing Ryan for bats to compensate.  Maybe.

I liked the running aspect of his game.  I'm intrigued with adding him, but the other pieces don't move the needle enough for me in that offer.

Ryan for Anthony from Boston. Who says no?

Not straight up.  Too similar to what we have in RF now.  Ryan plus Wallner for Anthony plus P?? + P?? + ??? and maybe there's scope for a conversation, but I don't know the Boston system enough to suggest a pitcher a little lesser than Ryan plus another pitcher/prospect plus another lottery pick, to be any more specific than that.  But, only a conversation at this point - do we really need an upgrade from Wallner that much, and is that the position on the field where the team would benefit the most?

Moving Wallner to 1B is a hypothetical that needs at least some empirical evidence.  Otherwise he's a DH and the performance bar is set really high to be full-time DH - can he approach Nelson Cruz levels?

So yeah, I say no, but perhaps it's a conversation starter.

He’s a stellar defensive catcher. Sounds more like a way to get his bat up more than anything.

Exactly, they don’t include any “top” prospects in any of these except harry ford. They’re all the 2nd tier.

This year Harry Ford has played zero games in the outfield (and only 8 of the 273 games in his minor league career).

This season Ford has played 61 games at catcher and 15 at designated hitter.
