DOUBLEHEADER GAME THREAD: Twins vs. Guardians 08/09/2024; 1:10 p.m. (BSN & MLBN) & 7:10 p.m. (Apple TV+ exclusive)

Message added by Squirrel,

Just a reminder, since we had some issues in the last game thread: no political talk or references are allowed in baseball threads. No name calling, either. And stop with the labeling of other posters. We are seeing way too many ‘haters vs apologists’ type comments. Banter, have fun, joke around, commiserate, critique or praise, disagree with one other, but be respectful with each other no matter what your opinion of them is.

Apparently "TBD" throws left-handed...

M Margot (R) LF
B Buxton (R) CF
R Lewis (R) DH
J Miranda (R) 3B
C Santana (S) 1B
R Jeffers (R) C
M Kepler (L) RF
W Castro (S) SS
B Lee (S) 2B

Joey Cantillo. 7.36 ERA.  Hitters should feast game 1.

I'm sure people will complain the team doesn't have enough pitching.... They are down three starters, pretty much no team has that much depth. Not that I liked the original plan....

Who are the 3 starters down? Ryan and Paddack. Who's the third one?

Not too upset with the MM decision. He's been raking against lefties.

That was the narrative for a while, but he's been slumping lately.  His season OPS against lefties is now down to .709, which is just slightly below league average.

But I get playing him, because if you don't use him vs lefties what purpose does he serve?

DeScalfiini (sp)

DeSclafani. OK. I don't believe he was REALLY being counted on. More like they hoped they might get something out of him. How about a 1/2 grade? Lol

Yeah, I wouldn't consider him as 'missing' starter - was never really there to begin with.

I'm not complaining, the Twins went nearly two years without losing a starting pitcher of consequence, that was a pretty dang good run.

The gripe shouldn't be that the team didn't have starting pitching depth, the gripe should be that Paddock and Desclafani WEREN'T the pitching depth. Both of them had no business being considered rotation pieces for a team coming off their first playoff win in two decades. Maybe one for the 5th/swing spot, but not both.

If only there were some way, some...mechanism, some...strategy whereby the poor Twins could have supplemented their roster in-season. That would have been something.

Oh well. Poor, unlucky Twins.

Are you suggesting that things could've been done? Blasphemy!

They did supplement their roster with a project reliever who has a WHIP over 2 since the trade. Apparently that was enough.

What is the deal with waiver wire pick ups? The Guards scooped up a bunch of guys last summer, Giolito, etc.. Not ideal but a serviceable starter or two could shake free. Isn't there a deadline for when you have to add them in order to have the player post season eligible?

Twins web site says that Lee was put on the IL with his shoulder injury.

Blewitt has been pretty good for the Saints, but WTH is Topa? I guess I won’t expect him to pitch for the Twins until he actually pitches for the Twins.

Agreed. But they are eight deep right now.... Most teams couldn't dream of that.

We clearly didn't like the off season or trade deadline, but you swing and missed on the point completely.

Which was my last sentence....

Farmer for Lee.  Topa is a fugazi.

I don't think I did. They're 8 deep? They're 2 deep, and plenty of teams have had worse luck with starters than the Twins.

This isn't  some unforeseeable, incredibly unlucky situation.

And not addressing it in the offseason isn't an excuse for not addressing it in-season.
