You're making the assumption that other SS couldn't have been good defensively and hit a few singles. Correa is a very good SS and a smart player but he's not the only very good, smart SS in MLB.

No, but he IS the only "very good, smart SS" on the Twins roster.

And the fact that he doesn't have a Kingman-esque approach to hitting (unlike 90%+ of Twins developed hitters) and he is worth his contract just for providing an alternative to the all-or-nothin approach that is so prevalent in baseball today.

LET HIM LEAD!!!

I got a downvote on my earlier post. Not sure why... Perhaps my Red Roof Inn Commercial similitude was out of bounds...  perhaps it was the use of a mint.

Since it seems I must clarify. The play was awesome. I leapt to my feet and I don't leap easy at my age. Correa has been defensively nearly perfect all season. I want Carlos Correa on this team right here right now. I'm a C4 Fan.

But the title of the article was "Carlos Correa is proving he is worth every penny".

200 Million? That's what... 2 Billion Pennies. We are in year one of a 6 year deal. We got 5 more years to go and the first year of that contract has been a struggle at that plate.

It was a big play on a big stage by a big player. I will not diminish what it was because I loved it.

However... Is it ok that we don't diminish the value of 200 million.

Go ahead and downvote me again if you must. 😉

I wouldn’t downvote but bring up the fact he had plantar fasciitis, which is an extremely nasty and persistent injury. Assuming he doesn’t have plantar fasciitis for years 2-10 of his contract, I’d say he’s worth every penny. Further argument for that is that he lead the team in RBIs and still hit 18 HR. I think he’s better now that he has the ironic relief of the plantar fasciitis tearing.

I disagreed with you … that’s what the thumbs down means … disagree. I think you are trying too hard to break things into pieces where I’m looking at the whole package. You didn’t like his bat this year, so he’s not worth it, yet. I don’t think we’d be here without him. The unwavering leadership he has provided, the mentorship to the kids, his play on the field. Yes, his offense was off, but the fact he provided those more needed other facets, we are here. Because we are here, it’s worth it, imo, because I firmly believe we wouldn’t be without him. When was the last time we had this component? A very long time. He has been the catalyst, he has been what we have needed. Yes, we are the sum of all parts. But, again, without this part, we’d be done already, missing the playoffs altogether. It’s worth to be here.

And, for the record, if you are going to compare Correa to a hotel chain, I think the Four Season might be more apt. Imo, of course.

I'm not trying to break him into pieces. I think I was trying too hard to work an obscure 80's advertisement into the discussion.

Further clarification it seems is needed. I believe 200 million is 200 million because that is what it cost to sign him. Market forces are going to determine that. If you want a free agent, a free agent will cost what he costs... after you sign a free agent... the money is spent. I'm not going to be looking back at it.

In hindsight, even in consideration of his offensive struggles this year. If given a do over... I would sign him again. I am a C4 fan. I hope that helps clarify things a little.

I laughed when I read worth every penny. I realized that "worth every penny" was expressed out of a joy hangover and I love that. I laughed because I thought it was funny and I tried to be funny back.

BTW... In the metaphor. Carlos Correa isn't the Red Roof Inn. The play was the mint on the pillow.

Carlos can be any hotel of your choosing.

Well, maybe that’s where the confusion began.

But, worth every Penny. Yes, partly a statement of hyperbole due to a joy hangover. However, you said you’d do it again. Wouldn’t that mean then it was worth it, and maybe worth every Penny? And maybe we are playing the semantics game. To me, it was worth every Penny because we wouldn’t be here today without him. For me it’s as simple as that.

I want to proceed carefully here because I don't want to give the appearance that I am tearing down Correa in order to support a playful Martin Mull/Hotel reference. I'm happy right now and I'm ready for any and all positivity.

However... in the spirit of this discussion. Nobody has been paid 200 million for one year. 😉

I just want to say... that play that he made was perfect at the perfect time. The pickoff call was perfect at the perfect time.

They were very tasty mints.

Go Twins!!!

Every penny? Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled he finally showed up but in my book at 35 million and the way he played this season Correa is working off his bar tab. Maybe if he leads us to a win against the Stros we can begin this discussion. And I hope he does..

I've seen the career of Ozzie Smith, and to me, he's still the greatest SS I've seen in my lifetime. And I've seen Templeton, Trammell, Larkin. Vizquel, and other tremendous SS. And I've also watched Ripken and Jeter...both very good and worthy of HOF inductions, but neither as good defensively as Correa, IMO.

Massively unfair to lump Cal Ripken in with Derek Jeter. That's like saying "I've seen Torii Hunter and Rich Becker play CF".

Ripken was a plus-plus defender at SS. It wasn't necessarily range (although he had as much as Correa does this season with his chronic foot injury) but instead he had great positioning, heads-up play, impeccable fundamentals and strong, accurate arm. Sounds like Carlos Correa to me.

BTW - Correa has had one season of +20 RField. Ripken had five of them and played in an era where most teams sacrificed offense for defense at SS.

I would pick Zoilo ("Zorro") Versalles as best shortstop in Twins history.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoilo_Versalles

Zorro's defense was inconsistent, but his other contributions made him league MVP in 1965.

Zoilo had one great season, but really only one great season. It's kind of sad that having one great season puts you in contention for best Twins SS ever.

Right now... I'm hoping that he is worth every penny and that is still be determined because we have no idea what the next 5 years are going to bring. I think even Carlos Correa would agree with that.

But regardless of weather he ends up being worth it or not worth it when it is all said and done. 200 million is what he cost to join our team. That is how free agency works. If you want the player, you have to pay the price and he cost 200 million. The transaction is complete... he is a Minnesota Twin.

I was happy when he signed with us. I'm still happy. He's an elite SS. He's one of us.

Do I need to care if any other SS makes that play? Nope, I care that this SS made it in a situation that may have been a game-changer. Good enough for me. As to the value of the contract, I think it’s a little early to know for sure.

I expect Correa to have a big series vs. the Astros. Then we’ll know a little more.

I'm guessing there are other SS playing in MLB that could make those plays Correa made in games 1 & 2, but I think there's no question he massively improved our chance of winning those games with his play.  I watched the play to throw out Bichette in real time on TV and as the ball got by Polanco and seeing Bichette booking around 3rd, I thought he already scored because the picture on TV just provided no sign that a play could be made to get Bichette.  I think it takes someone with ice flowing through his veins to make that type of plays in pressure situations.

Is Correa worth every penny of the $200M contract right now?  Maybe not.  But $200M these days doesn't even sound that impressive for a baseball contract,   And being an instrumental part of getting that 18-game/19-year losing streak off our backs should be worth a lot to a Twins fan.  I'm hopeful that he will return to his career norm offensive numbers for at least a couple more years to make him truly "worth it" on paper.

I think one thing everyone should be able to agree on is that we're damn glad that Carlos Correa is playing shortstop for the Minnesota Twins in these playoffs.  Right?

Is he worth every penny? Absolutely because it’s the Pohlads money not mine. I sure would rather watch C4 play than know the Pohlads are even richer than before.
