Game Thread: Twins (Ober) v Tigers (Faedo), 8/15/23 @ 6:40 CT

Would like to see Maeda pitch tonight instead of Ober, gets the kid another day off and sets the rotation order for the (hopefully) play-offs: Lopez, Gray, Maeda and whichever of Ober/Ryan pitches better down the stretch.

Would also rather see Julien at DH and Solano at 1B, but, alas, it is what it is.

Might as well get it started: Gallo playing and Julien not?!

I am legitimately annoyed by that. Solano still feeling it enough that he can't play 1B? Polanco can't shift over to 1B? How is there no way for this team to get the worst hitter in baseball out of the lineup?

Edit: My bad for thinking Faedo was left handed.  Julien should be in the lineup!

This will be an unpopular answer but:

Julien is struggling at the plate.  .194/.341/.194 over the last 2 weeks and he is 1 for his last 20.  Against lefties this year he is slashing: .206/.206/.206.

Gallo over the same time span: .250/.419/.625 (I know the 4/4 game is within that time span).  I don't think anyone would argue against that Gallo is a better 1st baseman than Solano is.

Polanco has never played an inning at 1st in his career, including minors.

I have no doubt that Julien will get into this game, more than likely for Solano when a RHP comes out of the pen.  So what it comes down is 2 AB, possibly 3 AB for Solano/Gallo against left handed pitching instead of Julien.

FYI Faedo is a righty so the lefty stuff doesn't really come into play. I wouldn't have questioned it if it were a lefty on the mound.

With that being said, I also don't care about the last 2 weeks. Actually, him struggling is all the more reason to put him in there. This is how young players develop. He's struggling and needs to adjust to get out of that struggle. Not playing him makes that much harder. And Gallo has had a much worse line than that (minus the slugging) for 3 months so the "he's struggling" argument (which I assume is their thought process as well) doesn't fly with me.

Yes, Gallo is a better 1B than Solano, but he's not a good enough hitter to trump anyone who can be serviceable at 1B. I don't think Polanco would step in and be a gold glover at 1B, but if you can play SS in the majors (even if you're not great cuz you don't have the arm for it) you can play 1B. I don't think Julien can play 1B, but Polanco can.

My bad!! Honestly this is all you had to say.  I mixed him up with one of the other lefties Detroit threw at the Twins last week.  Against RHP he should be in the lineup no matter what IMO.  Beyond bizarre to start Solano over at DH over him.

I thought they were starting a lefty tomorrow and then I was going to be even more upset since he wouldn't have started then so I get the confusion on random Detroit pitchers!

Slightly surprised as well but it’s simpler than this. Why is Solano playing and Julien not is the proper question. Maybe Julien has issues with something like this guy throws? It’s a one game sample.

In regards to Gallo, I bet I could find several dozen worse hitters in the division, much less in baseball.

I'd start Solano over Gallo 10/10 times, but to each their own. If Julien has issues with something this guy throws he's not anywhere near the hitter we hope he is. And if he's ever going to figure out whatever that possible struggle is he needs to play. Not sit behind a guy striking out at historic rates.

You may be able to find "several dozen" hitters in the division you'd take Gallo over, but I can't. But, again, to each their own.

That's not a half bad lineup.

Hopefully it works!

How about Lewis playing and Julien, not.

I think this is a very important game as if the Twins can win, the best Detroit can leave the TC is 8 games back with 40 to play.  I wish Julien was in the lineup, but based on the August numbers I can live with Solano at DH.  Julien has an OPS of .535 to Solano 1.136

If Julien cannot get playing time because he has not maintained a .300 average and 900 OPS due to a little slump, then his stock in the eyes of management has fallen. Who has been the Twins best bats (OBP)?

I Julien may be just a little worn down.  Since the AS break he has the 3rd most PA (behind Correa & Kepler).

That is a fair point. I thought about that but also thought about the two days off this week and that Julien is likely hungry and fighting to improve (1-3 with a walk against LH on Sunday). However, there are always discussions within a club that fans have no idea about. I guess Gallo could always go 4-4 again.
