Twins Roster Moves-2022

That gives them a L-R platoon of Arraez-Miranda at first. Some tough decisions to make if players get off the IL as expected without further injuries.

I'd expect Smeltzer to be DFA'd when Bundy is back but I think they'll keep him as a LH option since there's only one in the bullpen right now. I think the likely one to go will be Contreras.

I think Cotton will be DFA'ed again to get Bundy on the 40 man. My count has the Twins at 14 pitchers with Smeltzer so, if correct, a pitcher will have to come off the active roster. If Smeltzer pitches okay, I'm thinking they are going to need him for long relief come June when we can only have 13 pitchers. Jax can't seem to get through a lineup the 2nd time through.

Well, I’ll speculate that Canó gets sent back to St. Paul and they won’t risk losing Cotton. From what I know, Cotton could declare free agency if DFAed and unclaimed. Of course someone else might go on the IL by then. Smeltzer could get hit around and sent back to St. Paul—I don’t think the Twins want to risk losing him either. As far as 40-man moves, there are still two ineffective pitchers on the 40-man..Either Strotman or Vallimont could be DFAed.

Cotton could do that — but he could have done that in April too, and he didn’t. (He was first outrighted by the Cubs back in 2020.)

FWIW, with less than 5 years service time, if Cotton elected free agency instead of accepting the outright assignment, he would forfeit his current contract too. Not that it is much, but he might get less on a straight minor league deal with another team.

Yeah I agree but I’m really just trying to see if I’m really registered and could comment .  At all but really aiming at today’s Cleveland game.  They make it like pulling teeth.

Contreras officially optioned to St. Paul (we all knew he'd be the first to go) ... but I wonder if someone is being activated? Garlick, who did make the trip to Oakland with them? Correa is also on the trip, maybe he's ready?

Hs to be Contreras for Garlick. He's traveling with the teem to Oakland. Correa is traveling but not yet ready for activation.

Reports were that both would be ready the week of the 16th, so … whoever is activated for today (and I’m assuming Garlick), I think both will be on the active roster soon

What's the ETA for Larnach? That's when the decsion time comes. Garlick for Contreras, Correa for Miranda, Laranch for . . . Cotton? Lewis (hope not)?  Cano? Smeltzer?

I just wonder WHAT three pitchers will NOT be on the roster come June 1 (which is when you must carry 13, but not 14, pitchers). Ober, Bundy back. Does Winder become a long man, or pitches when Archer or Bundy is basically an opener? Same could be said for Smeltzer. Is it true Smeltzer cannot be optioned back, which would be a huge gamble since he is young, a lefty, and can pitch multiple innings. He would have to be really really abd at this point for the Twins to send him out.

Cano has options. So does (ugh) Duran. No one claimed Cotton before. The difference if he was a free agent is that a team can sign him to a minor league contract, or pay the league minimum if they bring him to the majors, with the Twins eating the rest.

Makes you start to question the actual worth of Archer or Bundy. Maybe we can get another injury before June 1. Although I don't wish that on anyone.

Official Contreras optioned, Garlick activated and in lineup tonight.

It's too bad Contreras didn't get into the lineup once (only had 3 PAs as a replacement), but he'll probably be back eventually with how injury-prone this team is.

The actual date is May 30--two weeks from today. While I do wonder about these things, it seems injuries usually take care of full rosters. There's been speculation about the position players when Correa, Garlick and Larnach are activated, but I fully expect that someone will go on the IL rather than Lewis or Celestino being optioned.

Well ... or they could option Larnach down to get some playing time? He didn't make the trip with them, did he? I expect Correa to be activated this week, but not sure exactly when. And then Miranda goes down, I guess? It's going to be interesting and likely not what any of us thinks should happen ...

I saw on Twitter that Larnach is with the team and will likely be activated in a day or 2.

Good. We need Larnach's bat in this lineup if he can hit like he was before he got injured. I vote Miranda down.

I think Cano might be that pitcher. Although they need a 40 man spot when Bundy is activated so maybe Cotton?

I could probably be talked into an early season 2-for-1 trade.

I see an awful lot of terrible records around the league, I’m guessing the “problem” of having too many capable players, isn’t actually a problem for some of those clubs.

Per Post game interview with Rocco, Bundy will start Tuesday’s game, Cotton dfa’d.  Carlos hopes to be ready this series which means activated either Tuesday or Wednesday. Probably means either Lewis or Miranda sent down, with the other sent down for Larnach when he’s ready.

You mean send Larnach on a rehab assignment? I suppose that is possible, but from the sketchy accounts Larnach should be ready to go right away.

No, they could option him to St. Paul ... he still has options, yes? But since he made the trip with them to Oakland, we can assume that is not the plan. I didn't know that before when I suggested that.

Why use an option and deny the player service time? Rehab assignments are exactly for what you originally said “to get some playing time” so that they are full-speed when they return.

Bundy for Cotton makes sense, Correa for Miranda makes a whole lot of sense. Miranda isn't ready. It's that next move that's tough.  I think Lewis has earned the right to stay up on the big club and I would start him at 3B 3-4 times a week, SS once, and move Urshela to the more UTL role he was going to play with the Yankees. He can also be the RH hitting 1B. I also think sending Lewis back is what will happen with the idea of bringing him back up later in the season after a trade, injury, etc.  

Who would I send down/DFA? I think the answer is Kyle Garlick. He's a one trick pony and not part of any sort of long term future. Celestino and Lewis have shown that they are ready - let's keep them up and play them regularly. Gordon helps the team as much as Garlick does in a different way.  The only other answer I see is losing a pitcher, maybe Cano or Smeltzer although both looked good in their last appearances and given our lack of length from starters we sure could use as many pitchers as they will let us carry. 

Maybe a trade of Urshela/Garlick in the offing?
