When do you think the lockout will end?

With the last developments and the start of  Spring Training officially being delayed, when do you think the lockout will end and the season begin?

I've been saying a May start seems most likely for a while now.  I don't see anything that has changed my mind about that.

I'm *optimistic* they will start on May 1st. Given the speed at which owners are not negotiating, I have little faith there will be much progress until the season itself is in jeopardy, which will be some time in late March or early April.

I've not considered myself to be optimistic about a May start, but that is probably a fair label at this point.

I think they’ll be motivated to get something in time to get all-star festivities and post season play. Once the window closes for allstar game, there might not be a season.

Unfortunately, I'm not optimistic as there seems to be no real urgency between the players and owners at this point. Each side will have to go through their version of playing chicken with each other. Who blinks first??? 

It will be another 60 game season.

I can see this happening very easily.  The owners don't show much urgency, so it seems that they're fine with dragging this out until this point.  They know that the players will have more urgency long before this point.

I'm thinking we should lookup the schedule for the nearest high school baseball team and go watch some games. See some players who are playing for the game instead of the money. Make a contribution of an amount equal to what you would have spent going to a Twins game or the professional team. Have a good time. Be sure to bring an extra coat.

That is a wait and see ....

 

Yes I'm sure there will be a delayed start to the season opener as spring training has already been  postponed or delayed .....

When will season begin is anyone's guess .....

The fans deserve a scheduled season of our favorite past time ...

If there was a choice button for who cares, would have selected that.  Give me another month of lip service between the two sides of Haves which are negotiating on behalf a bunch of have not's with no progress being made and I"m pretty sure my interest in a season will be close to zero.

I wish there was a better way to handle arbitration. 

 

Players want salary increases each of the first two seasons. It currently is thre, and teams can give a modest increase if they wish. But the stickler is arbitration, where a player in years 4-6, if they underperformed, are seldom taking a pay cut in salary, and many are cut loose (and unsignable then by the home team) because the arbitration salary "seems" too much.

Having a 6 or 7 year salary structure based on service time doesn't work, because, again, as we see with so many minor league free agents, you m

 

 

Money. The Twins often claim that they can't go above 55% of revenue to pay players. Most all teams took a hit that they have to makeup, somehow, from the past two seasons, although the franchise investment has gone bonkers...up. Yet teams are never penalized if they go below (or far below) the 55%. The stickler are those teams that have (some) twice as much to spend as others. How to even it out and what is the penalty level on both ends.

 

But back to 55%. If the Twins have a $105 payroll on a $200 million revenue stream, do they have a $160 million payroll on a $300 million revenue stream. I always questioned where they suddenly spend that additional $50 million. Do front office employees ghet raises of substance or do they still hire the cheapest possible (ever see what the sales people make in Twinsland). Where does that monety go when basic operation costs are pretty much fixed.

 

As a fan, I want to see a better experience of going to a game, keeping it affordable.

 

I also want to have players that stay with my team, and perform as a team rather than individuals. I also want to see them as part of the community (as ell as ownership), if nothing else promoting the sport of baseball from Little League to high chools across the state.

The two sides don't seem to even want to sit down and negotiate, going back to pre-covid times. Which means every covid-related change added fuel tot he fire. It's going to be slow and ugly.

I think asking me this question after this week may lead to a much different answer, but right now I think it starts in April, but is delayed a week or 2. They're scheduled to meet every day this week which gives me the slightest glimmer of hope. How this week goes will tell us everything we need to know about the likelihood of starting anywhere close to on time. Hopefully they all realize they're going to crush the game if they miss any sort of significant time this year.

I was hopeful of like a May start.  However, based on how the 2020 season went, and how neither side has made much if any real movement on the top issues.  I am beginning of thinking losing a full season will be expected.  The divide will just grow again as games start to lose and players will want full year salary, saying they did not strike but were locked out so we should get full 162 game pay, and owners will not want to do that.  As each game gets missed it will make it even bigger issue.  

I knew the lockout would last a while, and was hopeful it would only be a few weeks of missed games, but unless both sides make some serious talking soon, I have worries for the full season.  I just wish the rich people fighting over the money would think about the pay check to pay check employees that will be out jobs when games are lost.  The rich rich players can lose a year and live off of savings, but the ushers, ticket sale people, janitors, security, club house people, food workers, and many more will be out jobs and they will feel the loss, not the players or owner.

This is the week to make significant, and I mean significant progress. If they get framework of a deal done, then I’ll say mid-April start date, maybe even 162 games with double headers mixed in. If they can’t get it done this week, then I have no idea. They met for 3 hours today. Hopefully 3+ hours tomorrow, and keep the momentum going through Friday.

If they can magically get a deal done this week - which I'm very skeptical is possible - the season will likely start on time. They have until March 3rd or so to have any hope of a regular Opening Day start.

I think it will get done on time and they push all this bitterness down the road.  It won't change the ticking time-bomb baseball is sitting on.  The one they keep doing their best to explode.
