Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 White Sox give Lance Lynn a $38M extension over 2 years... pricey, but he's played up to that tag so far. He has gotten paid well after failing to find a multi-year deal before getting a one year deal from the Twins.

The Mets need more help given all the injury woes on their starting staff, so maybe they see something in Hill's recent performance that they hope to fix.

Hill's ERA in his past 7 starts is 5.40, built on a very representative OPS-against of .876 (with a perfectly normal BABIP of .300). Normally I would caution a team against basing decisions on Small Sample Size, but the Rays have a stellar reputation where it comes to analytics, and perhaps their book on Hill at age 41 is that SSS is all he has left.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2021 Author Posted July 24, 2021 The Cubs had an unusual draft in 2016 without 1 & 2 round picks, and went exclusively for signable or 4th year college pitchers the first 16 rounds (with one catcher sprinkled in). None of them panned out. Their first position player was their 17th round pick and is now the starting shortstop for the Tigers (Edit: yes I had to look all that up again, but I did have a recollection of a team drafting all pitchers previously)
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 Can't believe the A's sent that much for a rental (sure, he's been awful this year, but still).....

I thought he would be the pitcher he turned out to be. But then he ended up being such an ass.
MMMordabito Verified Member Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Luis Gil is making his MLB debut tonight with Cole on the COVID list. https://nypost.com/2021/08/03/yankees-call-on-prospect-luis-gil-with-gerrit-cole-out/ I'm not going to watch a Yankees game, but the box score will be interesting.
Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 I enjoy the randomness of MLB : tune in the Giants Dbacks on MLB. Sean Poppen is pitching. The DBacks intentionally walk someone so Tyler Rogers spot comes up and they pinch hit. The Twins are a great proving ground of MLB players, not that Tyler has anything to do with the Twins. Just a twin. BTW, Tyler has an ERA of 1.83 EDIT: Now Zach Littel is warming up for SF as McGee is melting down. And he shuts it down with a good K. I guess when the bullpen has been a disaster, seeing these "minor" guys have success elsewhere gives pause.

He had an era over 11 in his last three starts for us so I don't think he was getting on track. Could be a number of things - 1) getting cut lit a fire in him, he's still a ML athlete and probably felt disrespected, regardless of how he performed. He's now in "I'll show them" mode. 2) NL is just a weaker league and Atlanta and Pitt aren't great offenses right now. 3) SSS 4) Maybe he abandoned what the Twins had him do, ala the Shoemaker complaint. I think this is the only one that I'd really care/worry about. But it might be worth monitoring the rest of the way.

wsnydes Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Two interesting pitching oddities last night. Adam Wainwright tossed an 88 pitch, 2 hit, complete game shutout against the Pirates. He also went 2 for 4 with an RBI at the plate! Corbin Burnes had an okay night of his own, fanning 10 consecutive en route to an 8 inning, 0 R, 15 K night. He tied the record for consecutive K's, joining Aaron Nola and Tom Seaver.

Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 Go back to the Squirrel's post, #2 in the thread, and listen to the sound of that home run. Rare and beautiful. I was very lucky to have seen Ohtani rip one at Target Field in July.. This guy is baseball crack to us fans.

No sir, just pointing out, to paraphrase Denny Green, that he is what we thought he is..... a #3 starter who shows flashes of dominance but can implode at any time.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Another data point for the volatility of relievers: the Blue Jays just DFA'd Brad Hand. Hand wasn't without his concerns, but he got a nice one-year contract last winter and posted excellent numbers for the first 3 months of the season, and was still assumed to be a solid acquisition at the trade deadline just 1 month ago.
