Hale DFA’d

There's still 13 millions reason to keep Hughes on the roster, though.

So, we need a fifth starter. Be nice to have a closer. A long-man in the bullpen. Someone who is a strikeout king when you have no outs and two men on base. Stop walking batters.

So let's look at route 1. Jorge and Mejia are on the DL. Nope.

Slegers was up for a fraction of an hour, doubt they can flip him back tomorrow again.

We have Gonsalves, Littell and Thorpe too far away in the minors to help, for now.

That leaves us with Enns, Busenitz, Curtis, and Moya. Man, that could be Trump's next law firm hire!

Fernando Romero deserves an opportunity to start IF the Twins are keeping Hughes up here and in the bullpen.

Is Hale opening a roster spot? For who?

And who should go: Duffey, Hughes, maybe Rodney...Hildenberger. Whew.

How did this happen!!!!!!!!!!

And we can't call up Slegers, Busenitz, or Moya to replace him. And Curtiss threw 2.1 innings for Rochester last night.

Is Buxton ready yet?

Otherwise, I guess we could add Nick Anderson.

Edit: if Hughes is ready for another phantom DL stint, we could recall anyone we want. (Well, unfortunately limited to our own organization, in the present universe and time.)

Don't worry, we will keep Stephen Gonsalves a LONG way from the major leagues.  He isn't even 29 years old yet so what is the hurry?

If I were cynical, I’d almost think they knew Hughes would get shelled, and they’d need an expendable arm to eat innings last night.

Pfft, it doesn't take all that much cynicism at all for that!

Is anyone else a little annoyed that we are essentially waiving the white flag (bringing in Hale), in a 2 run ballgame, to eat innings and save the bullpen?

Hale gave them 3 innings last night, how much do you want? Twins are digging themselves a hole, that soon might be very hard to impossible to get out of.

I kinda feel for Hale, his pitching wasn't awful yesterday, and Molitor tried to get him to throw the 9th when he was clearly gassed. I'd much rather see Hughes DFA'd or Rogers/Hildenberger optioned to AAA.

That would make more sense from an actual performance aspect and it would be what I'd be looking at. Unless one thinks Hughes could do better as the mop up guy in the pen, I'm ready to part ways. And Rogers, Hildenberger and Duffy all need to be sent to Rochester ... but who do we have to come up for those three? We have starters we could be rotating in and out of the 5th spot, but who do we have as RP call up options?

'Berrios and Gibson, and then go read Ibsen'.

Or then go watch Ibson. He's a midfielder for Minnesota United. That's a soccer team that reportedly plays in Minnesota. I looked it up. Because nothing else rhymes with 'Gibson', and not everyone reads 19th century Scandinavian plays and poems... I'm told.

Frequently.

Better to keep Hale in Hughes spot and DF Hughes, imo.

Sounds ok to me. If nothing else, it would send the shocking message that going forward the roster will be constructed primarily based on performance(!) rather than financial standing.

Two things:

1. This was Hale's destiny. :) Seriously, we picked him up as a reinforcement for Rochester, and I guess as an immediate mop up option. If he is unavailable to pitch for the next couple days, he has no purpose sticking around Minnesota anymore.

2. Hale shouldn't have been gassed. He has been a starter recently in the minors, had 80-something pitch counts just last week. 3 full days rest since a low-stress 41 pitches earlier in the week (while his Yankees were beating the Twins 14-1).

Hale didn't earn anything by performance.

If anything, Slegers or Romero could take Hughes' spot. (But of course, we can't recall Slegers for 10 days now since we optioned him to add Hale...)

Honestly, I think I'd be fine with DFAing both Hale and Hughes, although the Slegers option and Curtiss's usage complicates immediate replacements.

Matt Magill has put up really good numbers in Rochester so far. He's been awful when given a chance in the MLB, so I guess hopefully he's learned something. Do we know what type of stuff he has?

Was specifically referring to the letting go of Hughes part of the transaction. Agree that Hale has done little and is likely nothing special, but his career is less conclusively over that Hughes'.

I'm usually not a fan of an organization making moves primarily to 'send a message' to its players and/or staff, including taking an under-performing veteran out behind the proverbial barn and shooting them.

But in the case of Hughes it's clear that he can't pitch effectively now and probably won't do so ever again.

Keeping him on the roster tells the rest of the organization either that sunk cost equals job security, or that the Twins organization is still so bereft of pitching that nobody else has so much as a prayer of being better than a guy who is currently awful.

I'm already weary of these "blink and you missed it" appearances and multiple transactions that are happening lately. I almost long for the "stability" of having guys like Kevin Correia, Tommy Milone, and Mike Pelfrey on pitching staff. Okay, it's not that bad yet ... or is it?
