The Twins arrive in Kansas City for a 4-game series starting tonight. After winning only one game out of three in Tampa, it sure looks like the Twins are leaving Florida just in time. An obvious statement for anyone watching the news.

It’s been a rough year for hurricanes. The truth is we won’t get a real handle on how rough a year it's been until October. We’ve all seen the news and we know it is bad, but how bad it can get is yet to be determined. I will pray for those directly involved while I remain safely distanced watching the video from home. I encourage hopefulness but let’s face facts… if Jeff Skinner is your leading scorer and Scott Darling is your goaltender, it'll probably be a rough year for the Hurricanes.

Here are some things to think about:

 

1. Kansas City – With an estimated population of 481,420, it is the largest city in Missouri with St. Louis coming in 2nd. It isn’t an accident that the two major population centers of Missouri are tucked closely to the eastern and western borders; it is because everybody needs to be able to abandon the state at a moment’s notice. This need to leave is closely tied to the Missouri state motto, “The Show Me State." People from Missouri don’t want to hear a lot of words… they need to be shown, and since they need to be shown… they have seen some things... things that keep the bags packed just in case. For example, they’ve been to Branson and have seen a town created by a horrific collision of a televangelist and ventriloquist with a subsequent permanent melding together. They have seen the hundreds of miles of caves located under the their state... and they have seen the millions of zombie like creatures that live in those caves... and they know they come out at night and run for the state legislature. They have seen multiple tornadoes in their lifetime and have reached a breaking point because they are tired of fetching grandma from underneath the rubble.

2. Our Twins – Things have tightened up in the wild card race after the Rays took two games. The Twins have a half-game lead over the Angels, a one-game lead over the Orioles, a 1.5-game lead over the Rangers, 2.5 over the Royals and a 3-game lead over the Rays. Things are so close, the Twins only have a 5-game lead over the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

3. The Royals – They haven’t been playing amazing baseball as they float around the edges of the wild card race. However, Lorenzo Cain is hot at the moment and so is Melky Cabrera. Players get hot in order to support their immune system’s attempt to gain advantage over infectious agents, such as viruses, bacteria and barbecue sauce.

4. Today’s Joe M Conversation:

Montana: What did you make for us today, Joe?

Maddon: A special request from Mr. Morgan.

Morgan: Yes, sir... Cincinnati chili. I love this stuff!

Mauer: What is this? There are noodles in here. You said it’s chili?

Maddon: That’s what Cincinnati chili is… this is served 5-way so it’s spaghetti, chili, cheese, onions and beans.

McCarthy: Wow… this is pretty good.

Montana: I agree… it's delicious! Oops… damn it... I just spilled chili sauce all over my new shirt.

Morgan: Aww, man... that's a white shirt. That’s going to be tough to get out.

Montana: I know… I look like a pig

Mauer: You do look like a pig… and you spilled chili sauce on your shirt.

5. Marathon – I’ll be running this weekend in a marathon. I didn’t want to do it at first but it is for blind and disabled kids so I think I have a decent chance of winning.

On my way back to Chicago from Florida. I've been in Florida before when there have been hurricane watches and warnings, but nothing like this. Everyone was taking this one very seriously. Went out to eat last night and the restaurant had half its windows boarded up with 'Open' painted on the boards. Water was already gone, although the news reported that some of the major retailers were having more supplies shipped in. There are a few among us who reside in the area, hope they check in with us. My best friend is a volunteer with hurricane emergency management so she will be bunkered down at a shelter somewhere in Ft. Lauderdale helping.

First off, positive vibes to all who are in, or have friends and family, in the path of the storm. Be safe, be smart. Hopefullly everyone is prepared and makes it through unscathed. Remember that things can be replaced (it seems there are always a few that choose not to evacuate if necessary, etc, and pay the iron price, to reference GOT).

 

As for baseball, which is meaningless in the scheme of things, Id be happy with a split with KC, and just hang within a game of paydirt.

 

I have a strange feeling of foreboding about this series. Hopefully it's just gas.

 

All of the blown opportunities the past few weeks were tough. They basically could've iced this thing. Let's hope last night's game was a Heimlich maneuver of sorts, and they get back on track.

Currently watching forecasts and waiting for the bobble to the east that we got from Matthew last October.  I was supposed to go to Chicago for work on Monday but that's not going to happen with the airport closing on Saturday evening.  As of now, if the track stays the same, I'll probably drive to the panhandle Saturday night and wait on the storm to pass before driving back, assessing whatever damage there might be, and then deciding whether or not to fly out for the work trip on Wednesday.  If the track remains the same, forecasts are for 80-90mph winds even in Orlando.  This storm is no joke and I'm glad I'm not in South Florida or live on the coast.

 

As for baseball this weekend, 3 out of 4 would be ideal in my mind.  At least the Twins have their best 2 pitchers and Berrios going in this series (yes, I'm considering Gibson one of our best given his last month of work).

We are 6-4 in our last 10 games. If we go 13-10  we have a good shot and aside from this series it probably doesn't matter how we get there.    I would gladly take a split this weekend.   7 of our last 10 are against Detroit  and I think everyone else playing for the WC has a tougher schedule the rest of the way.   Good time to play some good baseball..

My mother is in a nursing home in Ft Myers.  I've been getting updates on thier plans.  At first they planned to evacuate, but this morning decided against it.  Good thing, I can't imagine a bus full of 80 and 90 year olds in their conditions taking a long bus ride.

Are your parents riding with or in a safe place?

My Mom is back in Chicago with me. This was a planned trip long before all of this. Fortuitous it was, as to try and get plane tickets this week to leave would have been near impossible.

 

Dad stayed behind. He is in a memory care facility and moving him just wasn't possible, by any means. But they are well equipped, well prepared and he will be in good hands. This facility has been through hurricanes before. And if this one stays it course up the east coast, it won't be as bad for them there.

My Mom was supposed to return to Florida on Monday ... that's not happening, either ... not sure when she'll get back, but with my Dad still there, she will try to get back as soon as possible.

Akin to "if we all jump at noon, maybe we can knock the the earth into afurther orbit to counter act global warming" kinda of plans, they probably are not yet practical... But when one is, boy will it be exciting!

We're breathing smoke from the Montana fires all the way down here in New Mexico.  I wonder if Kansas City's air is also affected.

 

Heard other stories from friends about people stuck in Florida, deciding whether to try to drive, or worried about getting on the road, getting stuck in traffic, running out of gas and then getting hit by the hurricane while on the road.  Here's hoping the path of this monster misses Florida as much as possible.
