Sano to DL according to Gleeman via Berardino

It'll be interesting to see if Vargas or Granite gets most of the DH time (assuming that Escobar will be at 3b). I'd like to see Vargas get another shot and go on a run.

Be interesting to see if they can work Garver into the mix. If he was healthy, I would rather see Granite up here and Rosario (or Kepler) in the DH role.

If it is Kenny, hope he makes the most of this opportunity.

I wonder what the Minnesota Twins airfare bill has been this year?

I'm assuming you mean Garver?  Vargas against righties and Garver against lefties with a shot at 1B occasionally to spell Joe?

Gleeman described it, I believe, as "stress related". Further examination to follow. If this means "stress fracture" that's a broken bone. I've had it in a fore arm injury and mine was caused by a twisting kind of thing. A usage injury rather than a collision event.

Defensively, we have Sano covered.  Offensively, we might have him covered...or not.  Depends on if we keep hitting like this throughout the lineup.  If everyone to chip in, we've got it covered.

The announcement of Sanó to the DL is on the Twins Web Site. Are they going to bring up a pitcher for the doubleheader (other than Melville)?

Was it not confirmed that Vargas was to replace Sano and Melville is the 26th man?

Granite is also dealing with a leg injury. Hasn't played for nearly a week.

During the broadcast, Bremer was suggesting that the Twins bring up a fresh arm for the Chicago series, perhaps optioning Pressly again. They could recall Boshers (for Sanó) and option Pressly or someone else for Vargas, getting around the ten-day rule. Boshers is really the only guy I can think of on the 40-man who figures as a bullpen piece. I suppose they could add someone else from the Rochester bullpen, but that would cost a 40-man spot.

I'm glad they at least decided quickly and didn't play short handed for a week first.

Short term I'm not sure it hurts that much given how bad he was scuffling the last 10 days. But I wonder if he makes it back this season. IIRC a stress reaction is what caused Mauer to miss April 2009.

Interesting. I wonder if that is why he's been slumping a bit of late. Stress fractures though don't necessarily mean the 60 day DL.

If this is a stress fracture, could well be the end of season, my guess is 3-4 weeks.  Might have something to do with the weight he carries.  Very bad break for the Twins.

Stress fracture is what I saw reported.

Lighter athletes get stress fractures as well. I highly doubt it has anything to do with his weight.

I thought I read he had fouled a ball off the spot, maybe even the game before. And this was a delayed reaction or discovery.

That was my thought, at well.

This year is going pretty well for Sano and better than expected for the Twins, but it's still a dress rehearsal. Sano has been scuffling and other players have been doing great. I hope he takes the time to get healthy and doesn't rush back, and uses the time to get in better shape and work on some of the areas where he's been weaker recently.

Now official--Vargas replaces Sanó on the 25-man roster, Melville added as the 26th man and on the 40-man. Really, the bullpen is in pretty good shape. I'd imagine Busenitz would be ready to go today and Pressly only threw 18 pitches on Sunday. Hildenberger, Duffey, Turley,  Rogers and Belisle are all rested, with Turley and Duffey available to go multiple innings.

It was from a foul ball of his shin.  Stress fracture is a bad terminology.  I think they mean hairline.

Wasn't Turley optioned and then added as the 26th man?

Zenser is correct,

Melville was called up and Turley was optioned and immediately recalled as the 26th man.

I guess I don't get that sequence of moves.  Even if the Twins option Gee and/or Melville out after today (which they are almost certain to do), there is no one eligible on the 40 man to come up other than Randy Rosario and Aaron Slegers.  Boshers still has 9 days and now Turley will have 10 after today.

A possible move would be to bring up Slegers to start tomorrow and demote Gibson to the pen.  I'm in favor of that move.

Unless they phantom DL Perkins I suppose.  That would allow Turley to stay up.

If the Twins were going to option out Melville after the game they would've just called him up as the 26th man instead of optioning Turley and recalling him as the 26th man, So it looks like they view Melville as the 5th starter for now.

Gee is most likely out of options and even if not due to his service time he can refuse the assignment.

Actually, it makes sense that Melville was called up with a rostered player optioned and not the 26th man. That's not the part I don't get. Theoretically, the Twins could option Melville after game one and bring up a pitcher to be available for game 2. But now they have to send Turley out after today. And like I said, no one eligible. It would have made more sense to option Pressly, who is likely unavailable today anyway and call up Boshers as the 26th man. Now, the Twins have Gibson slated to start tomorrow and will have next to no-one rested in the pen. Not ideal, to say the least.

Again, my solution is to bring up Slegers to start tomorrow. That leaves Gibson available in the pen. Even today possibly.

If you make use of the 26th man option, you can't make any roster changes between games of a doubleheader.
