Anybody else worried this will make the Twins front office look bad around the league? Especially after Dozier to the Dodgers talks seemed to get pretty advanced before fizzling out. As a Twins fan, I'm certainly glad they're not accepting trades they don't feel comfortable with, but I just wonder if other teams would avoid working with a team that had a reputation of being difficult (not saying that's the case yet, just wondering).

It depends on whether the source of rumors is in the Twins front office. Last week, Gee was being DFA 'd this week Garcia is being acquired; last winter, Dozier was going to the Dodgers. Some people don't like when their unfinished business becomes public, because it can be disruptive to the players involved and it makes you wonder if the rumor is an effort to squeeze you. My guess is that these are not malicious leaks, but instead are the product of inexperience. Nonetheless, even if another team likes Falvey and Levine personally, they could become cautious to engage in deep discussions, for fear of premature public disclosure. The Twins could benefit from a communications consultant.

Can he pitch the 7th inning?

Very well, but don't expect him to help on defense or make any assists.

Yeah, but I don't think telling the other teams it's their problem if they don't like it will work in baseball.

Might as well go all the way and get Ron Nessen.

what does an average pitcher cost?

And, if you are upgrading from colon or Turley or Wilk or ????....average is a huge upgrade.

Ervin Santana's numbers pre-Twins would be considered quite average. Probably even below average.

The Braves just released reliever Eric O'Flaherty. His 7.85 ERA would have fit right in with the Twins...

Probably the missing piece in this deal.

How much could the medicals really impact this thing? It's 2 months, and Garcia is healthy and pitching now. I can't fathom how medicals could be a difference maker here (unless the Twins were already hoping to re-sign Garcia).

He could be pitching hurt.

What we learned after the Padres shady dealings last year, I believe any issues or discomforts a player mentions to the trainer must be added to his medical file.

Could be. Or maybe its like when your dad went shopping for a $1000 used car but your mom only let him bring $500. So he pointed out every spot of rust and each tear in the upholstery in painstaking detail hoping to haggle the guy down on what was already a cheap car.

If he is pitching hurt then I don't want him to be healthy

His fastball velocity (90.7 mph) is at a career best. And according to FanGraphs linear weights, his sinker is playing at career-best levels at 6.5 runs, compared to his career best mark of 6.3 set in 2012.

According to the Baseball Prospectus leaderboards, Garica’s sinker ranks fourth in swing-and-miss rate (21.9%) this seasons and ranks 12th in GB/FB ratio (6.42).

If it's a legit medical concern, I'd likely just drop the deal altogether. Guess it depends on what they think they know.

Edit: haha ... I see others basically made the same comment ... note to self: read to end of thread first.

Part of the issue is that Garcia's medical file was going to be crud. That was well known. He's injured his shoulder, neck, back, and pretty much everything involved in the pitching motion.

RickMahlerUnsungHero - this is the quote from TalkChop:

My sister is dating a guy working locally for one of the Twins minor league affiliates. He tells her that they don’t know yet because they’re waiting for medical clearance, but they think maybe a catcher? (I know this is a stretch, but I just wanted to humblebrag about my potential brother-in-law. Don’t screw this up sis!)

I liked the 'humblebrag' line.

LOL...okay, that's not mine. The guy who wrote the article at Talking Chop got a lot of info from me and a number of the posters follow me on Twitter and were asking away last night, but that one is not mine.

I also love the "humble brag" line...

Only 32. Nowhere near veterany enough.

Atlanta is rolling the dice. Garcia just had a good game. If he pitches tonight, it'll be one less start for his next team, meaning the compensation will go down. I'd make an offer that expires once he throws his first pitch.

Before the trade, all three were top 30 guys.

Top 30 of Atlanta, not baseball. Dykstra not projected to be much of a hitter, Eliis has a ceiling of middle relief, not even set up. Gant lacks command to be a starter. At almost 25 still has not shown command to be a starter, has given up too many runs yo be a reliever. That is not any different than a year ago.  The Cards dumped a starter for low ranked prospects.

I just want to know the name of the discussed prospect regardless if the trade happens. I have been told that there is no chance of acquiring a competent starter for a 15ish ranked org prospect. This seems to indicate that is possible but we really don't know if 'decent' is more like 10ish or in the 20's.

And my frustration with the board as a whole continues with the complaints about 'Why is Gibson even here (much less Colon)?' and the reluctance to trade any level prospect (except the Navaretto (almost non-prospect) level) for a decent/compentent pitcher like Garcia.

It makes a lot more sense to me if Atlanta leaked it.  They are the ones looking for more in return.

Except that'd be very, very odd by Coppy, who is incredibly tight-lipped about any discussions, as is anyone in the org as far as names.
