Well.. This didn't go well. Saved money on the first pick for no real reason.  This is the kind of draft you can really end up regretting.

Well, clearly the Twins FO and scouts know stuff I don't know. It seems like both Rooker and Leach are small reaches for 35/37 so we're saving money. But I'm not sure where we're going to spend it.

Not to belabor the point, but perhaps Rooker took under slot money as well.

Well, I'm glad you're happy b/c you probably know more than I do. But why pass on Carlson or Canning? Or Enlow? I mean, Leach seems like a third rounder (although I like that he's Canadian and only 17) so why not take him in the 3rd round and use our picks for higher guys?  We'll see how this plays out tomorrow but I'm concerned.

Canning dropped for medical reasons. It's not clear why Carlson did yet, but its probably not just a Twins thing.

Once certain HS players start dropping, it continues for a long time because the presumption is that they won't sign (for the money teams are willing and/or able to pay).

 

So plenty of HS arms will be sitting around indefinitely.

I think Rooker is a great pick. That dude can hit and he could move quickly. And hopefully sign for underslot.

Landon Leach  6'4 205

 

 

 

Leach opened eyes on the national scene with a strong showing at the Rivalry Classic at Fenway Park in the fall, and he showed progress with the Canadian Junior National team in the spring. The top Canadian prospect in the class came up through the Toronto Mets travel program. He hasn’t been pitching for very long, but he has a large, durable frame and plus arm speed. Leach’s fastball peaked at 93 in the fall, but worked at 90-94 and tickled 95 in the spring. Leach gets heavy sink on his fastball and is tough to square up when he’s locating his stuff down in the strike zone. He’s a good athlete, has a repeatable delivery and shows flashes with his slurvy breaking ball, giving scouts reason to believe that his best days are still ahead of him. His breaking ball shows natural three-quarter break along the same path of Leach's arm slot and it has occassional power bite to it, with hard-and-late snapping action. Leach's relative inexperience makes him a risky pick, but his quick growth, body and athleticism could entice a team to pounce on him as early as day one.

So is the long term plan here to switch the window for true contention?  All these picks are young guys that need 3 to 4 years to develop.  So I guess we trade some of the stars we have in the making while we wait for the pitching to arrive? Because you know we ain't buying pitching so we are likely going to have to trade for it and pitching is expensive.
