Who gets dropped from the 40 Man?

If the Twins go to Opening Day with Gimenez and/or Park on the roster, who gets bumped?  Maybe they can put Perkins on the 60-day DL, and that would buy a spot, but what comes next (or first, if for some reason they don't put Perkins on the 60-day DL)?  Who are the one or two candidates you see bumped?  Maybe go three, in the (admittedly unlikely) case Schuck or Stubbs is on the Opening Day roster.

Tonkin, imo, would be "likely". It is possible they'll just cut bait on Murphy also, and have a vet type catcher or two in AAA.

My own guesses come from this set:  Boshers, Haley (returned or traded-for), Melotakis, D. Santana.

 

(1) Haley, (2) Boshers, (3) D. Santana (if an outfielder is kept), and (4) Melotakis.

Santana, Adrianza, and Tonkin are all out of options, so it any of them don't make the 25-man roster, they have to be dropped from the 40-man anyway.

 

I suspect you will get at least one drop from that group to roster Gimenez.

I missed Tonkin -- that's a good bet.  And Spycake's sound observation handles at least one more spot (they aren't keeping BOTH Danny Santana and Adrianza, I don't guess).  

 

If Tonkin is kept, I don't see them dropping both D. Santana and Adrianza, though.  So that's still just one.  If not Tonkin, who else?

The guys who can't be sent down are probably most likely (Tonkin, Adrianza, Danny, Haley). But there are also a ton of lefty relievers on the 40-man roster right now (Breslow, Boshers, Melotakis, O'Rourke, Perkins, Rogers, Rosario). I'm guessing one of them is dropped from the roster prior to the start of the season, probably either Boshers or O'Rourke.

Santana and Adrianaza could both survive if they decide to start Vargas and Park both in Rochester which I would not rule out. Otherwise there is no 25 man spot left for both in my opinion. 

 

Tonkin could stay if they 60 day DL Perkins and send Chargois down to Rochester.

 

Or... decide to send Gimenez down to Rochester and go with Murphy in Minnesota... and send Chargois down to Rochester. 

 

I personally think that is too much to ask and I can't see them keeping Tonkin.

I am guessing Tonkin, followed by one of the middle infielders.  Boshers is also a likely cut.  Twins have lots of players at the bottom end, who will probably not be hers.  I am guessing Tonkin and Boshers along with the loser of the middle infield battle. That should be enough spots.

If we're going with the hypothetical that Perkins is NOT going on the 60-day, I don't see why Boshers or O'Rourke wouldn't be removed.

 

If the Twins have half a mind to try to sneak a Tonkin, Santana, O'Rourke or someone else trough waivers, it might be a good idea to do it now while the other teams are still making difficult roster decisions. Or, it's also possible there's no need to do any sneaking at all.

What is really the most important point in this discussion is how many we can come up and not hurt the chances of our 103 loss team going forward.  Boshers, Tonkins, Santana, Murphy...we have an abundance of potential drops and the future will not be harmed.  I have not even listed half the potential cuts.  I just hope this gets harder in the future.

DanSan would probably not be claimed and we could let Murphy and Haley go. Felix Jorge and Randy Rosario would probably get through without being claimed as well.

Someone might claim Tonkin and use him to his strength (1 inning at a time) rather than how Molitor uses him. Buddy Boshers would almost certainly get claimed, as he was our best BP pitcher other than Trevor May last year.

 

I just really cannot see keeping Haley unless the new FO believes they have some level of infallibility, so he must be good because they picked him up.

Haley was rule 5, he has to stay on the 25 unless they trade or returned and the be waived and clear. If he's worth trading for, why risk him to waivers?

Looks like the May to 60 day deal took care of Breslow and no more spots will be needed for the bullpen.

There is a 3-way fight for the 1B/DH type between Park/Vargas(40 man)/Hague .  If Park (likely he should) or Hague make it, they need 1 most spot (2 spots)

 

also there is another 3 way fight for the 25th man spot between D.Santana (40-man)/E.Adrianza (40 man) and B Gonzalez.  Santana looks like will get that spot, but regardless this battle will open a 40 man spot (even if Gonzalez gets it that will be -2 +1)  so (1 spot needed net)

 

If either Tonkin or Haley do not make it, that will open another spot.  I cannot see both making it, so that will take care of the last spot needed.  So you do not need Perkins' 60-day DL spot yet.

Boshers has an option left, so there is no need to risk losing him now

agreed. I guess either he's worth stashing on the 25 as the long man or return him. If he can't make it on one of the bottom 3 pitching staffs in MLB. He ain't getting claimed. No sense in worrying too much about it.

Why? Boshers has an option left. The Twins have 5 Michael Tonkins in the minors to sift through. He's had his chances to prove something, and he's just a typical 6-7th inning reliever.

 

Eventually they need to trim the fat from that large group of middle relievers. Why not now beginning with Tonkin?
