Hayes is saying Twins taking on 2026 salary for hoffman salary tax reasons,  Toronto taking on some of the salary for 2027.  $5 million or a little more would even it out.

I have to be honest, I was already out on Dasan Hill. Really exciting pick, but guys with his lack of control at any level NEVER end up being useable MLB players. I absolutely would have sold high on him. Maybe not for a reliever, but I'm less sad about this than others.

Twins taking on $3.5 million for Hoffman. About $8.5 million added this week.

I'm not a fan of dealing for RPs, generally. Hoffman, for example, was awful after being traded last year.

OTOH, I don't love HS pitchers as a rule....but I still don't love this deal. 

The bullpen looks well set up this year and next, though.

They'll need to find some hitting and D next year.....and if there is a long lockout, next year isn't likely worth much.

I know this might be controversial, but I love this trade. The Twins got back a guy who was a closer on a World Series team last year and was an All-Star in 2024. They did give up a good amount, but that is what you have to do in order to get good players at the deadline. The headline is Dasan HIll, but he has not been good at High-A and is still a ways from the majors is he reaches it.

Maybe, but it's not cheap pitching. I like Bailey Ober as a guy, but if he's really throwing 86-87 you wonder how much longer he can last.

#3 starting pitching prospect.......that's the long term issue for this team, most likely. (not this deal, but the fact their SP depth in the minors is "suspect". Rojas is the number 2 SP prospect......)

Yet every contending team, every year, looks for bullpen help. Almost without fail.

Bullpens have become incredibly important in today’s baseball. Starters go less than 6. Almost every game. Bullpens win or lose a LOT of MLB games.

Yup. It's why last year's deadline, while unpopular, made sense (mostly).

Quick is a lot better than him, and frankly with his control issues, I take a few of the new college arms in the draft easily over him too.

This is why people say you don't fret too much about the bullpen in the offseason and start of the season. 

4 of the top 6 guys are midseason acquisitions, and not for a whole lot of capital. Pretty well done by the Twins front office.

I really like Hoffman having control for next year as well. All of a sudden the 2027 bullpen doesn't look terrible. You have Gomez, Morris, and Hoffman at the top. Tommy Nance, Travis Adams, Banda, and Kody Funderburk and Kendrys Rojas all coming back. Matthews and Festa could also be turned into relievers

From Fangraphs most recent update Hill is FV40+ while Klein and Pena are FV35+. I follow their progress so I am more biased but if this was a return for our closer and I didn’t follow them I would be underwhelmed.

Klein was probably going to need to be DFA’d for the 40 spot so it really is just the two. Hill has 37 walks in 45 innings and probably will need to start in high A again next year. He is a long ways away. Pena is the number 49 prospect in Fangraphs updated and has no power and real questions about his hand for the infield.

The Twins are getting a major league reliever that might push everyone down a notch in the bullpen. They have to give up something to get that player.
